In this interview, Lord Kim Darroch, the former UK ambassador to the USA, discusses the death of Alexei Navalny and its implications for politics and opposition in Russia. He expresses concern for those who challenge Putin and suggests that Navalny's death raises suspicions about the nature and reasons behind it.
Lord Darroch also discusses the potential for a Russian invasion of Moldova, highlighting its vulnerability and the pattern of denials seen before the invasion of Ukraine. He supports David Cameron's tough language towards Russia and expresses concerns about a Trump victory and his comments about NATO.
An aide to jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny said on the X social media platform on Friday that he was unable to confirm his death, reported by the Russian prison service earlier.
"Russian authorities publish a confession that they killed Alexei Navalny in prison. We do not have any way to confirm it or to prove this isn't true," Leonid Volkov wrote.
Navalny's lawyer was travelling to the site of the prison where he had been serving his sentence, Volkov added.

Don’t get me wrong. This isn’t good but Gonzalo Lira an American journalist died in a Ukrainian prison in the past month who spoke out against the Ukrainian Government, they are trying to imprison Trump in America. Matter of fact, how about the fact that we have an installed PM. We also have Julian Assange jailed here for no reason whatsoever. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t good, but our hands aren’t clean either. We are not coming from a place of moral fortitude.

On May 1, 2023, Lira was arrested for violating Article 463-2 of Ukraine's criminal code, which prohibits justification of Russia's ongoing invasion of the country. The Ukrainian Centre for Strategic Communication and Information Security noted Lira had also shared pro-Russian disinformation such as claiming the Bucha Massacre was faked or that the Ukrainian government was a Neo-Nazi regime, and that Lira had shared video of himself insulting Ukrainian soldiers. Lira was subsequently released on bail and placed under house arrest. He returned to social media to claim to have been tortured while imprisoned, an allegation denied by the SBU. Lira attempted to flee the country by crossing the Hungarian border on July 31 to claim political asylum, but was captured and arrested again for violating his bail conditions. This was confirmed by the United States Department of State and Chile's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His cause of death was reported to be pneumonia.
