I think his is still the best high bar routine ever seen ! Still remember up to this day the half hour long public protest at the judges, when he should have won by all rights ... He remains a true legend :)

Forgot which year/event it is but I remembered when the crowd boo-ed at the judges, Alexei even had to step out and tell the crowd to quiet down. That's how much respect he got from people all over the world acknowledging his skills. He is a legend ....and oh SO handsome!

@@dR3aMfyre Why does it seem the landing is the most important aspect of these sports? I look at the strength , ability to complete the moves as being more important than if somebody takes a step. Forget that look see what they are doing in the air! He got gypped out of a gold. Just the opposite with ice skating, they can twirl and spin and do the triple sow cows!! whatever and land on their butt, still get gold...

Alexei Nemov was robbed of Gold at the Olympics, if only he competed at 2008 and 2012 with the sane routine, he could have won Gold and he is a superstar gymnast in his own right, once he appears, the crowd screams, what else will you call but a Superstar gymnast

Thanks for responding, it's not often someone replies conversationally, with pertinent information, so I appreciate it. I was watching the video again & enjoying the crowd response, the way the collective gasp gets larger with each release. What an incredible performance. Thanks again.

You must be tired of me by now, but I have a quote here about the old system that I forgot: "But the code includes no mechanism for rewarding athletes who exceed perfection, like Nemov did in his high-bar routine. The gymnast who surpasses previously accepted standards of perfection - either with a radical new skill or unparalleled virtuosity - gets no bonus." and "There's no reward for originality anymore in the sport"- Peter Vidmar, (WashingtonPost article, can send you the link if you want)

I'm no expert either so if someone wants to correct me, go for it. Back in 04, there was a different scoring system (got changed in 06 thanks to situations like these: especially the Svetlana and Alexei cases) that favoured a perfect execution over difficulty. So if you had a gymnast like Nemov who did a very difficult routine but with a mistake, he'd score lower than another gymnast, like Hamm/Cassina/Yoneda, who didn't do a difficult one but didn't have any (or few) mistakes.

I wasn't familiar with the routines that caused the controversy at this Olympic games. I have just gone back and forth viewing both Alexei's & Hamm's performances, & I'm not going to claim to be a gymnastic expert, perhaps that is why I'm confused as to how this truly astonishing performance could be scored so much lower than Hamm's. Is that supposed to be simply due to the dismount? Watching each performance several times it seems that is the only thing that one could call "better" about Hamm'

Alexei didn't even have to try in that olymics, which he said himself that he wasn't there for the medal. He wanted to be in the olympics one last time before he retired. He even missed the birth of his son because of the olympics. He just wanted to compete and complete that chapter of his life. I have watched Paul and Morgan since they first came onto the

@EssenceOfTruth I agree. Considering Alexei was 28 years old at the -04 Olympics, and gymnasts are in their prime (in general) from 16 to 19 and for him to be this good some ten years after that, is pretty damn impressive (and let's be honest, his -96 and -00 routines were better than Hamm's -04). Alexei has always been a crowd favourite. I mean, the roar of the audience when he performs is proof enough: they love him like one loves a champion, and that is something earned from skill and talent.

(not only Nemov - the scores were off for almost all gymnasts). So all in all, this was a sad and embarrassing day for gymnastics: it wasn’t bad routines or the wrong settings on apparatus, it was a faulty system and even worse judges that sadly cost some gymnasts a well-deserved medal. There's no justice in the Games, afterall :/ Wow, that got long! Sorry everyone for the spam, but it looked much smaller when I wrote it the first time.
@adde27

Hehe, pun approved. Truthfully, this system is better, it's a matter of balancing Difficulty with Execution: take Zonderland's Olympic gold routine, for instance. If his arms had been bent during releases or if he faltered at the landing, no Kovacs or Cassinas in the world would've given him the gold. That said, yes, it does need a bit of work: it still favours Execution over Difficulty (Uchimura comes to mind), and I think that will never change: the core of gymnastics is to reach perfection.

- Nemov’s Olympic career, you’ll see that he’s been given low points for advanced routines in comparison to gymnasts with less advanced/graceful routines since 96 (ex: Atlanta PH), something that even commentators have picked up on. It’s really not surprising that the judges who changed their score after the crowd boo’d got escorted out by FIG officials: when the crowd realise that the points aren’t corresponding to the routine properly, you’re not doing your job-

@bubbablakey1 I can not believe you felt the need to comment on MY comment out of all that you see here. It's my opinion that Alexei is better, because if him form, but he is graceful in how he executes his routines. You didn't hear anyone else be wowed when Paul or Morgan went up. Alexei has a presence that Paul and Morgan have to grow into. Paul and Morgan have to try. Alexei doesn't. He is a veteran and can do tricks that Paul and Morgan haven't even tackled yet. That's my opinion. Sorry!

Sorry for the late reply - my inbox doesn't appear on this new layout >.< Yes, but it had been brewing for years: it just sort of exploded with Athens with this event, but the scoring was off for many other gymnasts. I think the system's poor design was brought to light for *everyone* to see here, as the 10-point system doesn't reward daring or innovation - just flawless moves that didn't really make you the best.

It’s a stupid system, and it should have been changed years ago. Now, in Nemov's case, he did two things wrong (ish): he bent his arms a little during releases and he didn't nail the landing. Yet these two mistakes were not so bad that he’d only score a 9.725: considering he had four releases in a row and six in total, he should have scored much higher (look at HB champions today, you’ll notice that that’s what makes a good routine). Though, if we want to look very critically at the judges over-

@kayper54 back then the scoring system was designed to encourage a clean routine rather than a lot of flashy difficulty like release moves. the step at the end of nemovs routine would be a minimum 3 tenth deduction, so sticking a dismount was extremely important. modern rules may encourage power and difficulty, but that was simply not the case in 2004. get your facts straight and stop acting like hamm was not a great gymnast simply because he wasnt flashy. blame the scoring system & judges

He can do all the kovacs and other releases that alexei can do as seen on his past routines and workout videos on his website. @bubbablakey1 scene back in 03. These boys have skills and they are great! But, they don't have what Alexei has. If Alexei was SERIOUS for just a few moments, he would make Paul and Morgan wish they never got into gymnastics. He would seriously out show them. Again, that is my opinion on that. Paul and Morgan are great gymnasts, but they are not all that special.

@blakethegymnast He may have "stuck it," but I've seen more powerful bar routines from 14yo girls than I ever saw in Hamm's routine. You've got to do more than just "stick it." You have to actually have a POWERFUL and DIFFICULT routine. Hamm's was about a level 8 or 9 at the most. Very bland. No power at all. I'm hoping as time moves on, his reputation becomes more and more tarnished until he's finally considered an embarrassment to the judges on that panel.

Every time I see this I hate Paul Hamm just a little bit more. Hamm has got to be the LEAST deserving gold medal winner of all time. And he has not a shred of sportsmanlike decency in tiny heart of his. I'm so glad he didn't make Beijing and I hope with all my heart he stays away from London 2012 as well. I've never been as ashamed of or embarrassed about an American sports competitor as I am of him.
