This game won soundtrack of the year. With good reason. Mick Gordon said that games usually have music that emphasize where a player is but not what a player is doing. DOOM has encounters where the music starts slower, softly building and as you start killing demons it eventually turns into full blown audio rage.

In the first age, in the first battle, when the shadows first lengthened, one stood. Burned by the embers of Armageddon, his soul blistered by the fires of Hell and tainted beyond ascension, he chose the path of perpetual torment. That same feeling carries over even now, it always feels somewhat disconnected to me, to play in first-person. Also with respect to shooters I can't aim worth shit, I take ages to land a single shot. There’s a talk by the composer Mick Gordon in the GDC here on KZbin where he really geeks out explaining how he got that sound and guitar tone. Basically, he came up with the idea that, since the theme of DooM is demons and corrupted energy and all that, he’d try starting with a very simple and pure sound, a sine wave, and passing it through several chains of different devices: pedals, splitters, feedback loops, tape recorders and filters, but overloading them and distorting the signal so much that the circuitry started to generate all sorts of artifacts and strange sounds in the signal and made it all sound really different and brutal. Also the chainsaw guitar as others have pointed out, he didn’t want to use just a normal guitar tone no matter how heavy it might sound, so he had the idea to use a plugin called Morph that creates sounds by combining certain characteristics from two different source sounds, in this case a guitar and the chainsaw sound from the original Doom. Alex, you have no idea how pumping it is to kill digital demons while BFG Division plays in the background and it dynamically gets more intense the more aggresively you play. You should check it out.

The music in DOOM 2016 actually gets dynamically re-mixed in-game in response to how many enemies you're fighting, how low your health is, &c. The "up and down" you mentioned - if you get into an intense fight, it plays the "ups," while the "downs" are for lulls in the combat. No matter how you play the game, it will always perfectly fit the pace of the music, turning gameplay into a bloody, shotgun-wielding dance to this killer soundtrack! This track - particularly the part around 7:20 - actually uses the same melody as a song from the original 1993 DOOM called _Waltz of the Demons,_ but it's a very different arrangement. The original DOOM had a lot more atmospheric tracks as well as metal, and the 1993 version of this track sounded more like Camille Saint-Saens' _Danse Macabre._

And to think they almost said they wanted an all electronic soundtrack and this would’ve never happened. Thank Mick for telling them Metal is the soundtrack of Doom.

You nailed it, brotha. I blast this on my bluetooth speaker outside for every single PR attempt when powerlifting. This track is straight-up audio caffeine. So fuckin awesome!

I always thought this video was shot in a way that makes it look like Mick is doing all this from inside an office somewhere in the facility while the game is happening just outside. I guess it's the white and yellow color of his boards looking like the white blue and yellow tech in the UAC 2016 facility.
