I was 9 years old when I watched this fight with my family. I remember going to bed in tears that night disappointed that Arguello had lost. Fast forward 14 years and I am at a bar at the beach in San Juan del Sur in Nicaragua. It was in the middle of the afternoon so it was empty. As I turned my head there was Arguello, drinking a beer with a lady. I got up without hesitation and said hello champ. He smiled and graciously said hello back. I told him I have great admiration for you and what you accomplished. When I was 9 I went to bed crying after the Pryor fight. He replied “we all cried” and shook my hand. What a class act he was.

The drugs did not make Pryor a better fighter, but they enabled him to absorb punishment without immediate damage. This way he was able to dish out punishment without regard for defense. The damage came later when he was worthless against no names. Just look at Randall after his fight with Chavez. 5 broken ribs and he didnt feel it, but he was worthless after those fights. The drugs kept them from getting kod, but the damage was done. It allowed their bodies to take more than they could.

+Ed Macedo No proof Randall used roids. He was not "worthless" after the first Chavez fight. He was on his way to winning the second fight when JC quit after the headbut. Then, he won the WBA title over Coggi. Chavez is lucky Don King didn't make a third fight. JC Chavez was coddled by the WBC and Don King, who milked him to the end. He was the one who was done after the first Randall fight.

No one can say what any individual could put in their system to give them an edge, look at Athletes and steroids, I watched every fight Pryor had, included some amateur ones, he was prone to being knocked down by fighters even with just decent power, it happened several times in his career, the power right hand Arguello threw and bent Pryors head back should have at the least put him down, but should have knocked him cold, but it did not even faze him, why, because he was so high on something, he felt nothing, after every Pryor fight, he was always willing to talk, and tell you how awesome he was, after this fight, he came over to the ropes and a reporter began talking to him and his words were so slurred and garbled, you couldnt understand a word, he acted and talked as if drunk or high, I had never seen this from him in any other fight afterwards as he did in this one, and I can't believe he took that punch and continued on as if he had not been hit, he was cleared juiced up on something, we will never know what, him & his corner, and Lewis cheated Arguello out of this Title, by the 2nd fight, Arguello's Heart was gone, and Pryor was done also, he could have had fights against, Duran, which I would love to have seen Duran destroy him, and Hearns or Leonard, all would have beaten him, but he was done, due to all the drugs that he and his camp were putting into his body, and when he beat Hearns in the amateurs, Pryor had matured very early as a fighter, at that time Hearns was just beginning and did not grow or mature for awhile, so Pryor caught him at the right time, otherwise in the Pros, Pryor would have ended up like Duran did against Hearns, and I'm from Cincinnati and I was always a Pryor fan, but I knew his limitations just as his corner did, that's why they juiced him up against Arguello, Pryor previously never fought anyone, he beat an aging Cervantes, D. Johnson put him down, and he only had decent power, and was not very good, he had to cheat to beat Arguello, so really who did Pryor ever beat that was not either a bum or old and ready to retire, and also how many weight classes was Arguello over his own Nature weight Division, Arguello was a very good LW, but that still was above his natural and best weight, and Pryor had to cheat to beat him, that shows me Pryor was good yes, but not among the greats.

I agree and disagree with you.. There's no denying the hawk was a great fighter.. But those bottles are kept basic for this reason alone.. It's to stop an advantage.. And to stop what's happened over this fight, doubt and disputes.. Even a quick hit of caffeine is unfair.. All of this is just speculation though.. There's no denying prior was a bomb.. Great fight either way

+Keith Bearman You are both right, a sip of any substance cannot make changes in your body that fast, that takes some time. However, its still ilegal to have anything different from regular water for a simple reason. Now, I personaly don't care about the bottle, what intrigues me is that thing Pryor was inhaling everytime he went to his corner.

Keith Bearman Yeah man you're right, I did some research and that was still legal until the late 80's when it was banned from boxing. Hey but still, I saw a video were Panama Lewis was making him drink that water since round 2, I would say that 11 rounds is enough time to make a reaction on pryor's body. It was a great fight, but to me it was not clean.

You can see Panama Lewis reaction in an interview when he was asked about that misterious bottle, it was the first time he had been asked that question and it took him by surprise, his face tells you everything. Man those power punches from Arguello were freaking hard to take but he was like nothing. He was clearly high on something.

Stupid announcers calling this a good vs evil fight. Pryor was a rough man from a rough upbringing who had to earn his way to the top. Not evil. Some people move up the ladder with charisma and others have to work and grind their way up.

I think Panama Lewis is a gigantic piece of shit, first and foremost. But even if there was something on that bottle, I just can´t imagine a substance having that type of immediate effect that would make me say ¨Pryor won because of that substance¨. I just think Pryor is a legend. He was a great fighter and he wanted this fight as badly as any fighter has ever wanted one. I think that had a lot to do with how he came out on rd 14. I will never take anything away from him. And Alexis Arguello is my second all-time favorite fighter. I love him. But I gotta give respect where respect is due. The best Jr Lightweight ever versus the best Jr Welterweight ever. Even if my favorite lost, this is, to me, one of the greatest fights ever.

what Luis Resto said a few years ago (he was the one that had padding removed from his gloves by Panama Lewis) is that what Panama used to mix in the water was the pill that's inside the inhaler that people with asthma use. That he drank that mix himself in fights and that what it does is that it opens the lungs and it gives the person an incredible boost of energy. That may be the reason why Pryor had so much energy so late in the fight
@noecamarena9
@noecamarena9 9 жыл бұрын
if you saw the documentary "Asault in the ring" then Luis Resto explained exactly what Panama Lewis mixed in that drink. when that dude was like, "it was used to control diarria", he couldnt even keep a straight face. having said that, alexis arguello was an ordinary fighter who wasnt used to the pace of north american boxing.

Nah he could handle North American boxing, but he couldn't handle a doped boxer who drank some mixed shit and then became a junkie a few years later. I'm pretty sure Pryor would've dropped past/during round 12 with those rights to the face from Arguello. It's all because of the drugs and the hype around the poor dude to finally get some fame. Honestly it's pretty pathetic, for Pryor.

Aaron Pryor's own mgr knew long before the fight that the only way Aaron was going to win, was to give him that 'juice'. For Aaron to get in front of a camera years later to glorify his victory was chicken shit, and without shame. He didn't fool anyone but himself. It wasn't so much the respect that Aaron wasn't getting. It was simply a case of a jealous man whose entire career was overshadowed by a better man in Alexis Arguello...The Greatest Ever

I agree, I watched this fight live and many times since, I'm from Cinci and saw most of Pryor's fights, he was susceptible to knockdowns, by almost anyone, yet Arguello throws a perfect right hand, bends Pryor's head straight back and he never flinches, he was on something, plus his ring side interview they tried to do with him after the fight, was directly in front of my seat, I've never seen a fight talk and act so high, he slurred all his words, talked crazy an could not put 2 words together.

Sonny Liston was on dope for most of his fights and put astringent on his gloves against Ali, Cleveland Williams and others. I still respect him for the fact that so many boxers cheat in so many different ways that go undetected anyway( putting objects inside their gloves to make their punch heavier, wearing cornrows to absorb punches better, etc.. etc..) Leave Pryor alone.

I don't care whether or not the 'black bottle' was needed for Pryor to get the win. He still cheated using a stimulant which certainly gave him extra resilience to take punches and give them. The rematch doesn't prove Pryor's superiority, rather how damaged goods Arguello was from the initial 'black-bottle' beat-down.

To those claiming it was drugs or whatever that allowed Pryor to take the kind of shots he did with no seeming affect....I read an article once about his life after he finished boxing. In the article a doctor who had examined him, particularly his skull, found that his skull was far thicker than a normal skull and figured this was why Pryor could take so many shots with little effect.

I have serious doubts about Panama Lewis's understanding of chemistry and I don't know of any stimulant that takes effect _immediately_ . there was no black bottle in the 2d fight and he beat Alexis more decisively than in the 1st. _but this is just my opinion_ .

Pryor was willing to die in that ring. Look at the body language and the tenacity of the 2 fighters throughout the fight. Arguello was fighting well-above his natural weight. Everybody talking about how Pryor was on something and how Agruello's punches should have knocked him out, but Pryor was hitting Arguello with some hellacious shots and he didn't go down either. So that point is just stupid. And as soon as someone brings up the second fight with no bottle, here we go with "Oh his heart was gone after the first fight." Well, you're right about that. Pryor took his heart with a sound ass-whooping. Pryor fights Arguello 8 times and Arguello loses 8 times. Why? Because he couldn't withstand the style of Aaron Pryor which was in one word, RELENTLESS.

Why u think Duran jumped from lightweight to 147? He couldn't get no fight, Cervantes(kid pambele) was the first one to slip him in like 77 then he says in his autobiography he tried to get Pryor to fight him 3 times, Pryor led him on but Panama Lewis even said to espn classic that he once was wrapping pryors hands and he started to lean into a fight with Duran; Lewis advised him that he felt he would get knocked out in a damaging fight and he said topic never came up again, and Eddie Futch openly kept arguello away from Duran; what punch did he have to keep Duran off, Duran would have just kept driving punishing shots to the head and body with nothing coming back his way to slow him down

I cant remember when the last time Pryor lost or who beat him...I know he lost as an amatuer to Hilmer Kenty, a guy from right here in my hometown a few times but I dont remember when he lose as a pro, Vapor Man.

Hey people who are talking about the "Supposed Illegal Water Bottle" in the first fight. Didn't Pryor whip his ass again in the second fight???? Where no supposed illegal water bottle was used???? Great fighter Arguello but his style SIMPLY didn't match well against Pryor.

I'm a huge SRL fan. A huge Hawk fan too. Too bad the promoters could never make the fight happen. I don't believe men like SRL or any guys that fight at that level duck anyone it's all about the money . Why would SRL get in the ring with Duran or Hagler, Hearns. Money is why. Fear doesn't enter into it. It's not about whos's the baddest it's about getting paid. Now we have Maywether and Pac. They want the biggest pay day ever. Seriously they've fought their whole life. NO FEAR

Thats the fight were panama lewis took padding out of his fighters glove @ destroyed the otheir fighters boxing carreer who would go on to commit suicide.It always makes me wonder if he did that to Pryors gloves?

Panama Lewis admits giving Pryor his own special blend of something he mixed up, but he has never said exactly what it was, I believe without that mix, Arguello puts Pryor down that round & he either stays down or he is out of it enough to where Arguello finishes him, I was always a Pryor fan, but everyone in cincinnati, knew his limitations, he was lucky to come back from Dujuan Johnson's & Cervantes knockdowns, & cervantes was past his prime.
