Man, this video is like gold. Mancini is really the main reason I started watching boxing as a kid. Of course Alexis Arguello is one of the all-time greats and he was so gracious and humble the way he consoled Mancini after the fight. And the announcing team of Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy was one of the best. Never missed those Saturday afternoon fights on CBS. Great upload. Memories.

Mancini was a top fighter and excellent contender and demonstrated great heart in pushing the champion to nearly the 15th round, but Arguello is one of the all-time greats and demonstrated the patience and stamina to wait for the opening he needed.

I am not sure if he carried him. I think it was a combination of Arguello being a slow starter and Boom Booms pressure. Arguello was very patient and would start timing you and with his power was dangerous.

Huaaooh!

To me if Salvador had lived he would have beaten Arguello and Duran or even the young upstarts Whitaker, Chavez, etc. Sanchez was special and they all knew it and they avoided him. If Gomez had realized who Sanchez really was he would have avoided him to.

@@junkookbts1273 I remember when everybody picked Gomez as a heavy favorite to destroy Sanchez......and rightly so. They didn't call him Bazooka for nothing. I felt at that time Gomez was to much for Sanchez to handle. It was a mis-match alright! Sanchez completely destroyed him and many were in a state of dis-belief! Aaron Pryor fought arguello. But there was one fighter that Pryor avoided and that was Duran. They avoided Sanchez. They realized he was special.

A glorified sparring session, with Arguello carrying Mancini for a good portion of the fight. If he had wanted to,he could of stopped Ray in 4 - 6 rounds.Look at the early rounds in this fight, and Arguello throws no punches with bad intentions.Look at the opening rounds of him against Pryor and you see a fight from first bell.Ray had nothing that Arguello had to figure out or be cautious about. His corner knew that when they took the fight,he was taylor made for him - a short armed pressure type who allows him to stay set.

Imagine Arguello, although I couldn’t find it on Wikipedia, lost by KO in his debut in the first round? There is a KO on wiki early in his career followed by another loss. That’s determination. A lot of guys would get discouraged.

He is very motivational for an up and coming boxer. Shows how losses don't mean anything as long as you are still committed to becoming world champion.

not to mention that Arguello isn't really a very talented fighter. he doesn't have a great chin, or blinding speed, or a high reserve of stamina nor size. all he had is his heart and punch. to compensate the lack of natural talents, he studied the sport, honed his skills and talent and learn how to fight in an old fashion way: fighting regularly.

Alexis was another of my fav boxers. The boxers in that day were just that, they were the art. I didn't see when Alexis fought Aaron Pryor, but, was shocked to learn Alexis lost. It later came out that Aaron had been "juicing" . It was also said his trainer cheated on the wrap and also issued stimulants.. Although Alexis admitted Aaron beat him fairly, I'm more than certain there was bigger play in those fights.
