Wow, that ship looks amazing, and that photo etch sheet is unbelievable, your finished project should be museum quality. I never worry about details that won't be seen, as I know that they are there and that is satisfying. If you learn by anything, my friend, rejoice, learning is life.

The wailing and nashing of teeth was heard worldwide when the Victory’s conservators published the correct buff colour for the topsides. I bet many a prized model was quietly put into storage.. ...nah seriously, she was painted half a dozen colours during her long career, and it usually was whatever Chatam or Portsmouth had laying about. It wouldn’t be hard to imagine several colours being mixed together just to use them up.

I was lucky enough to be gifted by a friend recently the following - Heller 1/200 L' Indomptable, Heller 1/150 Le Glorieux and the Heller 1/150 Amerigo Vespucci. And for good measure two Airfix 1/87 HMS Bountys'. This followed a conversation we had about me getting into modelling more seriously now that I don't need to work, after only dabbling on and off over the years. The Heller kits look great and I haven't decided which one to tackle first. I'm just finishing Revells 1/110 HMS Bounty at the moment as this was a nice kit at a great price to get started with sailing ships. New plastic kits for sailing ships seem to be a bit thin on the ground now but I've just recently added to my stash from Airfix the 1/130 Cutty Sark and the 1/180 HMS Victory from their vintage classics range. I'm new to sailing ship kits but I'm looking forward to the challenge, they are certainly more involving than a tank! I would love to add this kit that Alex is building to the stash but they seem hard to find and when they do come up they are quite a price. Happy modelling my friend.

Sometimes the exaggerated details have to be blurred in order to keep it within the scale of the model. But it's nice to dream a little in miniature and imagine the model is the real thing, it's what singles the model out from the toy and makes it unique. Would it be possible to design it so we could pull on the halyards and raise the yards out of their lifts or brace the yards round to wear the ship as if under sail. I've sailed the real thing. Also, it's a myth that gun decks were painted red to hide the sight of the blood from the injured, in fact they needed to highlight any blood splatter so they could find the wounded quickly in the half lights of the gun decks and get them to the surgery quickly.
@peterbellwood5412
@peterbellwood5412 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely . That's precisely what I would do when my father and I were professional model-makers . He would concentrate on the main components and I made all the fittings and made the rigging work . The standing rigging as the name implies , supports the masts and is stationary . However the running rigging is movable , and requires fittings that work . They are available to buy but I loved making our own. With a fine-vice and drill , it's not too difficult to convert the kit parts .
@das5813
@das5813 Жыл бұрын
@@peterbellwood5412 I've recently restarted modeling. So far I've done a few 1/72 scale aircraft and the 88mm gun and Fammo. I'm still collecting the tools and paints though it's a great help having the manufacturers include the paints. I haven't tried the airbrushes yet. Considering whether to get the combined airpump and sprayer or the type that uses a separate airpump. I am also experimenting with cutting door details out and making doors and hatches open and close. With the Victory I'm thinking of having the gun hatches open and close probably connected to the gun carriages so they move in and out. The imagination is without limits. Lol Best of luck.
@peterbellwood5412
@peterbellwood5412 Жыл бұрын
@@das5813 Nice one das . I'm ,even now, not interested in airbrushes . I've had a couple but I get a reasonable finish with the old 'hairy stick' . Preparation is vital for a good paint finish . That and polishing between coats . I love the idea/plan to hinge the hatch and to connect it to the carriage . Tell you what , mate . I love those little brass hinges that Alex used for the 1/18 Dauntless flying surfaces . I don't know if they came with the kit , or if he bought them separately . Probably too big for your purpose , but I'd love to use some to improve some of my 1/18 diecast model cars . I hate those 'dog-leg' hinges used on doors and bonnets/hoods . I totally agree with your comment of "The imagination is without limits. " All the best , das . Pete

The veneer is much better imho. I once laid a wooden deck, plank by plank on a model of the Cutty Sark. I discarded the plastic deck, glued square stock to the underside of the molded waterways, and individually planked the deck. After that, I threw away all the plastic and built it out of wood. It was a gorgeous model.

Great work, well done. I can only admire your craft and hope one day to emulate it a tiny bit. I have returned to the hobby after a long absence and have been taunting myself with a RN ship of the line build. The trouble is that I am cursed with perfectionism, and I know a build like yours would drive me insane. Just take the name on the rear. There are many pictures in books and online of those letters but the number of variations is perplexing. Even since Victory has been in dry-dock the spacing of the letters has changed a number of times. There are even drawings of the model's original layout with the ellipse(?) surrounding the name ... and for years I have thought that was just plain wrong, but apparently not! The after market kits are amazing and I know I'd just have to use one, or two or three or four until the detail is just right. Then there is the rigging. I would spend hundreds on a model I would never be happy with until it was just so. It would never get finished. No, I'll stick with tanks for now ...🙃

Kindred spirits, you and I, in our passion for the details! Accurs'd evermore we are, for all eternity to shamble the gloom- shrouded lower decks of our unfinished models, our chains and our shackles rattling and clattering their deathless dirge as we wail and weep in doleful accompaniment! "OHHHHHHH! OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH!" we moan our largo, minor chord glissando . . . . Yes, I am an aspiring novelist. How can you tell?

Working on this myself. I wanted to see what you did with part 344 - the blue facade at the bow. Nice to have confirmation that it just doesn't fit 😀. In the end I used a razor and an emory board to shave/file down the tabs on the back of the piece. That got me to the point where it is at least flush with the fuselage. The half towers on the side side hang over, but nothing to be done about that.

@@AlexModeling If I was reviewing this kit with a 5 star rating I would be confused. I would want to give it 5 stars and 1 star at the same time. This is definitely not for anyone but a very experienced modeler. You have to dry fit everything. You have to be willing to cut. You have to be able to patiently deal with less than ideal instructions. You have to understand that a mistake can be very difficult to reverse. I am on the later stages of the hull and I am quaking in fear at the thought of getting the masts to fit 😀 That said, it's a beautiful kit that rewards you for patience. The detail is wonderful. As an avid miniature painter I am loving what some have criticized as overdone wood grain detail. It's a dream to wash and drybrush. Nice build and thanks for the video.

I do only wooden ship models made of wood and metal and silk,, just like the real thing. The average build takes 400 hours.

Being a retired professional modeller I used to , too . However , I still believe we can and should appreciate others such as those who have a plastic model and do their best . Then there are others who , like I do now , enjoy starting with a plastic kit then add detail or modify into a different 'version' as in aircraft and vehicles .

@@peterbellwood5412 I switched from model ships to actual guitars about 10 years ago. I found a better use for wood. I always wanted to build a real boat from scratch, but never had the money to get started.

@@timhallas4275 Serious kudos , Tim . That's a true skill you have . Do you make furniture ? I was never very good with shaping wood , but I've always loved miniature . I was more than happy to make the wooden fittings for the large scale model ships my father and I made . We were commissioned to make quite a few models for the Admiralty , plus various museums including the Maritime Museum at Greenwich . We made a large model of the Golden Hind that was a 'prize' on 'Sale of the Century' . It would be interesting to find out what happened to it .

Should try and look into wooden ship modelling! Way more challenging and rewarding and can guarantee you once you make your first wooden ship model you will never want to go back to plastic ever again!
