They compose all their songs since 2016, with some exceptions. 2016 was the year they got their first song approved by the company and was called "Alone" that you reacted 2 weeks ago... after that, I guess everyone knew they could do a even better job than the previous composers of the company... Akane, the drummer played piano for 4 years and trombone for 6 years... then drums! MISA was in the same professional music school as Akane and Kanami was a trained piano player before picking up the guitar... so, composition-wise, they have all the "muscle" needed... and they use it. I'm really glad that they don't go for singing in english "just" to get more audience. For me, and this is just a personal opinion, I think part of the charm lies right there in the language... Kubato (the pony-tailed pigeon) does a great great job throwing english words and sentences like throwing "hooks"... you get to have some idea of what's going on but if you really need to know more (and it's worth finding that out...) you can always get the translation somewhere... Anyway, just got to the end of the video , loved your reaction and you are right, they deserve much more exposure, they are too damn good to stay in shadows... but they are the ones saying that "Band-Maid is a shy band" (just listened to a interview with Saiki and Kubato) ... opposed to your perception, Akane is the least shy of them all... maybe she looks like that because she stays there behind the kit, head-banging throughout the song, but that's just Akane always getting into it no matter if it's a concert or a music video, she just can't help but having that much fun every time. They rock, they are the best for me... and yes, always smiling, you saw the online concert right? They are stage-animals... Big thumbs up again Alex. Love your spirit... (Oh BTW, that's another gem from the same album as "DICE", "SPIRIT", I mean... :-) cheers!!!

As a musician of 50 plus years, I believe Band-Maid is the best and the most talented musicians in the world today.(IMO) I have been following Band-Maid since 2014 and their is no other band today that can do what they do. I am upset that Band-Maid does not get the recognition that they deserve. With Miku Kobato starting Band-Maid back in 2013 she has worked so hard to get Band-Maid recognized. I don't even know them and I am so proud of their work ethics. They write and compose their own music and every song to me is great. I hope someday everyone will see that. Band-Maid Rocks My World! Yes, music school for bassist Misa and drummer Akane (same school); and classical music education (piano) since childhood for guitarist Kanami. About writing music, YES on their three full albums (with a few exceptions on Just Bring It), no on their first three mini-albums (with a few exceptions - Alone was the first song written by them their record company agreed to release). Guitarist Kanami composes the music, and Miku writes the lyrics.

Another great reaction! To answer your questions, Kanami, Misa, and Akane have formal music training. Saiki and Miku have had vocal coaching. Miku was to taught how to play guitar by Kanami. Miku writes the lyrics, and she works hard studying English. It seems the more she learns, the more she incorporates English in their songs. The language doesn't matter to me, and I'm sure that's the sentiment of the vast majority of Band Maid fans. I do know all of their US shows sold out very quickly last year. I mean, if you think about it, the Japanese have appreciated bands from the US, England, and Europe with English lyrics for decades. So I think the only one needing convincing that music is a universal language is the record industry.

In fact Akane is the oldest of the ladies. She turns 30 in December. And together with bassist Misa, she adds the rhythm section to the framework composed by lead guitarist Kanami. At last the lyrics where added by Miku the band founder and rythm guitarist.

They have been composing and writing their own songs since "Alone". Miku is their main lyricist and Kanami composes their music. They have meetings with the other members and Saiki gets the final say, she has to sing it after all. Try their MV "Alone". You'll see the joy on Miku's face as she realize her dreams finally coming true. :)

I always enjoy your Band Maid reactions because of your enthusiasm and you feel the same way about them (apparently) that I do as far as their popularity and other groups of much less ability getting more attention than they do. I've bought their albums and really like them all so I really do appreciate how you feel. I'm going to do something I pretty much just don't do and that is subscribe. I'll probably only really react to Band Maid because I really only get really excited about two bands. These ladies and Nightwish because of Floor Jansen. It's odd because they really are two totally different genres. It's even odder because I'm an old Prog guy who's traditional #1 band is Yes even though I know they're in their twilight. I usually listen to bands like Porcupine Tree, King Crimson, Spock's Beard, bands of that sort. I'm getting older and didn't thin k I would ever care much about straight Rock any more but Band Maid has totally changed my attitudes. I love this band and will watch anyone who gives a reaction about them but I especially enjoy people like you who truly appreciates them and recognizes how good they really are. One of the reasons their lyrics are not only in English is that Saiki likes to sing in Japanese. Therefore, if Kobato writes lyrics that contain a lot of English, Saiki will ask for partial changes. The second reason is that they find value in conquering the world by singing in Japanese. If they conquer the world, there will be a way from Japan to the world. They are paving the way for other Japanese artists.

...and I feel really happy about all this. In line with those thoughts, I insist every now and then for reactions to those masterpieces from the BAND-MAIKO mini album... at least the ones that have a MC: "Gion-Cho" and "Secret MAIKO Lips" (This could even be a double reaction starting with the original song "Secret My Lips") The path to conquer the world this way is not a easy one... but they didn't got to where they are with easy "short-cuts", so, even if it takes longer, these 5 ladies will achieve it and I'll be there smiling as if they were my very favorite 宝物.

Great reaction! Don't worry about stopping the song in the middle. This is necessary to avoid the video being blocked. AKANE (Drummer) had studied at a music school, so her basic skills are decent. Many Japanese don't even know about them, because since they are not Japanese mainstream. I am Japanese, and I happened to come up with a KZbin recommendation and found out. I think one of the reasons why they don't sing in English is that many Japanese are not good at English. Saiki is not good at English either. It may be that using only a part of the English lyrics in the Japanese lyrics makes the sound better for Japanese listener. LOVEBITES is singing in English, but even Japanese people find their pronunciation uncomfortable. (I love LOVEBITES! But since I grew up listening to Western music, I'm worried about pronunciation in English) If they want to conquer the world, I think it's better to focus on English lyrics, but I think there is no need to overdo it considering the affinity between Japanese and English. It's called "decorative English". Most Japanese don't speak good english (as a homogenous and very strong culturally bind society, this is not needed outside business as much as Europeans, other Asians or Latin Americans) but words and phrases in English are used as decorations in their signs, advertising, songs, as an extra nice touch (good for tourism too). If you see their signs and advertising they are full of errors, weird grammatical constructions, and so on. Because it's decorative they don't pay much attention to it. Of course musicians are much more careful because they are exposed to a wider worldwide audience.

Why are they not properly promoted, especially abroad? Their label is owned by a company that produces equipment for karaoke clubs. The label is focused on the Japanese market and idol bands careers. This is probably why their website looks like it was made 30 years ago by some middle school student, and of course there is no professional English version of it, or English subtitles for MVs. Meanwhile, as the founder of Band Maid, Miku Kobato, officially admits, almost 70% of their fans come from outside of Japan. The Japanese are very mysterious people?

Japan is the 2nd biggest music market in the world, so I guess they concentrate on the domestic market. They do have two songs that are fully in English (The Dragon Cries and Don't Let Me Down) but being in English doesn't really seem to have helped those two in terms of popularity. The biggest obstacle for them is gaining exposure, because their music speaks for itself. As for blocks, it seems pretty random. Babymetal are more notorious for it, but Band-Maid seem to be fine for 95% or reactors, but the rest have problems.

@@StoneShards I recognise it from the video, but nobody at all mentioned anything political about the song until the video came out.

I like that one, It’s has in way a 90’s grunge vibe, regardless of the singing, the music written is very unique that way :)

I’m enjoying your Band maid reaction Sir. 😉 Their talents have not been properly evaluated in Japan yet I think. In Japan, the metal culture and the hard rock culture like Western countries are not major. (Of course, there is many good bands) In order for them to succeed, they must conquer the world. I believe in their success.from Japan🇯🇵Arigato🙏

Here's one I haven't seen you do yet. Rinne (Reincarnation) It's probably the heaviest thing they've ever done. It's an MV but it's good. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYKclZV7i8yNmaM

I'm surprised you have not their Wikipedia page. They don't sing in English coz their confidence in English is low. But language should not be a problem.... Rammstein is a perfect example. I'm from Australia living in the far north of Sweden. I to understand your exasperation as to why these ladies are not as popular as what we feel they should be.There are alot of aspects at play here... 1: Xenophobia..... Not in your language 2.Sexism..... Girls playing Rock music 3.The Baby Metal effect..... Talent being overlooked because of nationality, gender and on stage attire.
