2019 Volvo XC90 | Still A Solid Choice

Volvo'a flagship crossover remains a solid choice in the luxury 3-row segment despite only modest changes since the vehicle launched back in 2015. 2020 will be bringing some additional tweaks and a 6-seat version, but until that model lands it's hard to go wrong with the XC90.

Assisted a friend with her '19 XC90 purchase. Cross shopped X5 and Q7. BMW was good in many ways, but felt like a bunch of separate systems, not like a unified whole, plus, alot more money. Q7 was solid and alot of car for the money, but for her, a bit large and heavy, plus alot more money. List on the XC90 with Advance and Luxury pkgs was nearly $72k. Dealer/Volvo incentives listed on the website brought it down $10,000 with no negotiation plus they gave top dollar on trade-in. The great thing is it drove so much better than the other 2. That supercharger really eliminates turbo lag which was noticeable in the others. Less weight over the front wheels made it feel much nimbler and better handling as well. She also has a Tesla Model S so the screen interface felt familiar and comfortable. The massaging seats and suede headliner sealed the deal. The XC90 more than holds its own and betters much of the competition, even at list price. As Alex says, still a solid choice.

If you've ever had a back injury, like me, you'd give the Volvo front seats an 11 out of 10. Volvo builds their seats with the advice of orthopedic surgeons, and they are the way car seats should be built. If I sit for a couple of hours in favorite den seat my back starts to hurt. I have to get up and walk around. But I can drive for 3 hours in my XC90 and my back actually gets better! XC90 seats are the only seats I know of that make your back get better. No hyperbole -- the whole truth and nothing but the truth. .... I want to buy an all-electric car, but I'll wait on the XC90 due out in a couple of years, because of the seats. I've eliminated the Model X because their seats are atrocious.

777Outrigger Re: Volvo seats. In 1984 we bought a used ‘81 245DL wagon. On a several thousand mile road trip we never got uncomfortable. The seats were superb. Zero evidence of any sagging or wear. I loved everything about it! Unfortunately we had terrible luck with expensive repairs. Our mechanic said it had far, far more miles on it than the odometer showed. It was a lease return and must have been unhooked to avoid mileage penalties. We kept it for 3 years then gave up. We should have bought a new ‘84 model. We would still have it. (California cars don’t rust, especially Volvos. We still have the ‘96 Suburban we bought new)

@@steveprinty5674 So sorry about your bad luck with the 245DL. I've owned 5 Volvos for me, my wife, and my daughters, and the reliability has been from average to excellent on these cars. My current driver (while I wait for my all-electric XC90) is a 2006 XC90 2.5T AWD. It just went 6 years without a repair. But last year I had to replace the battery and generator, and also some front end work. More than satisfactory! My wife's 2015.5 XC60 has never had a repair. Low mileage for her car, for sure, but still excellent. ... But our mileage champion was a 1994 850 wagon. We kept it for 235,000 miles with only one major repair. The window control panel on the center console. $1,000! Our mechanic said putting the main window control panel on the center console was not Volvo's best idea as crumbs and dirt fall in their very easily. But that was our only repair over $250.

777Outrigger Cool! We are very happy (so far 🤨) with the 2014 GMC Sierra Crew Cab Denali we bought new, but I am very tempted to trade it for a new Volvo V90 or V90 Cross Country. I drove XC90 , X5 and the GLE back to back over a day, and then XC90 and X5 over a longer period. I bought the X5, why, better seats, finish, looks and performance with four people in it. XC90 was T6 Inscription and the X5 was 3 litre m sport X Drive. The GLE I felt was overpriced and hard to justify , the XC90 was underpowered four up and struggled, I really didn't like the gearbox on it. Just my thoughts and feelings on these three. I like the minimalistic look of the Volvo interior. The cutting edge BMW interface will surely not age gracefully. Then, there’s the Bowers & Wilkins system, which I would definitely option. If I was super concerned about driving dynamics, I wouldn’t be considering a 3-row crossover at all. I would also echo others who commented about the Aisin transmission in the Volvo adding to long-term reliability. I’d stay away from the dynamic suspension, and then really you’re left to worry about the engine and sc/tc.

I recently booked an XC 90 and I was comparing x5 and Q7. I will tell you the reasons for volvo X5 looked really nice both from outside and in but its grill looks a bit like bugs bunny teeth. That was not the deal breaker. It was costing me 63k £ with less options than XC90 ( except adaptive suspension). X5 is considerably more expensive but was offered for lower APR (2.9 VS 4.9) AND I may have gone its way bit what volvo offered 20% plus discount which was just too good. I got the 63000 car in 49k. I test drove Q7 too which was originally my first choice before I test drove it. It was again more expensive with higher APR OF 6.2%. Its drive was a bit boat like and I felt that I was driving something huge. Admittedly its engine was more responsive and the suspension was soft. Felt like I was driving an old american sedan. In XC 90 I did feel the bumps a bit more and the engine was not as strong as others but it felt light and nippy and I just loved the amber interior. But at the end of the day it was the big discount. I would certainly think about going for X5 as my next car

Bravo Alex for another excellent XC90 review. Good to see a reviewer finally mention Volvos available free over the air software updates which can add or delete newer or outdated features and options. Volvo also allows free downloadable USB navi map updates. Lastly, Volvo just released a free Polestar electronic transmission upgrade which send 80% of the engine torque to the rear wheels in Dynamic mode for a rear wheel driving bias for handling. The German luxury automakers sure don't give away free technology for their buyers.

J High OTA updates are primarily available for maps. Voice control updated through USB downloads. However, major Sensus updates must be performed by the dealer, or by tech savvy owners, through a VIDA subscription. Also, Polestar tuning upgrade is a purchase of about $1,000. Safety software updates are also available for a fee. Overall, glad that software can be upgraded at all. My Infiniti could not.

@@shunt8084 Navi maps are downloaded via USB from the Volvo website. I've done it at least a half dozen times since I've had my 2017 XC90. There are also certain vehicle functions that can by added or deleted by OTA updates. You're correct that Volvo dealerships can perform Sensus software updates as well. @@shunt8084 Also, the initial Polestar software optimization is about $1,000-$1,200 with a dealer discount, however Volvo just released a Polestar torque distribution software upgrade where 80% is sent to the rear wheels in Dynamic mode. I added the Polestar upgrade last year and the Polestar torque upgrade was added by my dealer 2 months ago. The differences are quite noticeable. Zero midrange turbo lag and it drives even sharper in Dynamic mode. Like Alex said, it still won't outperform the X5 or higher trim GLE but it doesn't have to for the vast majority of XC90 owners.

There will be possible price cuts on all non plug-in volvo models next year. There is a yearly tax calculation issue in Sweden with new WLTP emissions that would make it extremely difficult to own a volvo from Jan 1, 2020 unless it is plug-in or hybrid based on emissions. Think of Polestar as a tune that better matches shift points with the engine’s power curve. It has some boost to torque and HP, but those benefits occur primarily at providing power to enter on ramps, passing power, and just general responsiveness. Alex, could you please explain the difference between a rear wheel drive biased AWD system and a front wheel drive biased AWD system. Thanks.
@Ficon
@Ficon 5 жыл бұрын
Joe Larson RWD-biased systems handle better under power. They are also more likely to be full-time AWD systems (front axle always powered). FWD systems mostly only activate rear wheels on demand (Subaru being the exception with their 60/40 front-biased power split) so you can think of them as 2WD cars with on-demand AWD. They are more fuel efficient but do not handle as well and can eat front tires which have to both turn, brake and accelerate. FWD generally gets you better interior space too because the engine is transversely mounted. So it comes down to Toyota/Honda/Hyundai driving dynamics vs BMW/Porsche.

We can talk about this more on a live show, we should have one next week (I hope). While many systems will proactively split power evenly (50/50) a FWD system (Acura excepted) will never send more than 50 to the rear without slip. A RWD based system like Mercedes or BMW is incapable of sending more than 50% of power to the front without rear slip. There are pros and cons to both but generally FWD allows for more efficient packaging and higher economy and RWD improves power-on dynamics and allows for higher horsepower engines.
@Ficon
@Ficon 5 жыл бұрын
Alex on Autos SH-AWD in Acura is a situational gimmick and only works when you apply a lot of power while cornering. In straight-line acceleration you still have the same FWD issue of weight shifting to the rear and offloading front wheels which decreases traction, increases wheel slip and eats front tires if you have a high-torque (turbo) engine. Plus issues like torque-steer, etc.

Great review as always. The XC90 just seems overpriced to me, especially when you get above the R-Spec. I just find it ridiculous that almost all the luxury models make you pay a premium for safety features, that should already be part of the package - especially considering Volvo's claim to fame is safety. I'd have to go with a Palisade or Telluride, get all the safety features (at their top trims) and save a lot of money - I'm just not a badge guy and the value proposition on the Palisade and Telluride is just hard to pass up at a level just under the "luxury brand" space.

Had one for nearly a year. It’s a fantastic vehicle let down by the engine and intrusive safety systems. It looks great, the seats are bested only by Porsche and the whole package works very well. But... That engine is awful to live with. It’s gruff and in my experience it delivered zero efficiency improvements over a larger displacement engine that might have been better matched to the size of the vehicle. The hybrid might have been a better match. For comparison I have a full sized Land Rover Discovery with an amazing diesel in it and I’m getting a real world 26 mpg. It’s just a better match. My other gripe was all the safety systems, I found they were too intrusive . Too many warnings, especially on winding roads with vehicles parked at the side, or when you went to over take on the highway. Hopefully that has been addressed. I have not had this issue with the vehicle that replaces it.

Have you driven the T6? It's snappy for a 6000 lbs vehicle. Also, the reliability issues on the XC90 are all related to the infotainment and the T8 hybrid transmission. If you get the T5 or T6 ICE, they're solid and plus it's mated to a Japanese Aisin transmission, which is bullet proof. I agree that the merc and the BMW X5 are faster but I never feel like my T6 is underpowered but the T5 does have some lag.

Volvo is falling behind. They all share the same basic 2.0 L engine with various levels of turbocharging and "new" models are refreshes at best. Even when they say they're going 100% electric they just mean all models will have some form of mild hybrid or be a PHEV.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 5 жыл бұрын
It’s a gradual transition. The first BEV (Polestar) will be out shortly, followed by the XC40 BEV with AWD, then two more pure EVs after that that are on the public schedule. There’s also a next generation 2.0L engine launching now in Europe (mild hybrid 48V) that will replays all the existing engines. Volvo’s plan seems very logical: transition from gas to HEV to PHEV to full EV over a longer period. The fact of the matter is that BEVs account for a very small percent of sales right now.

It's tried, driven across England and returned in this car, the top model. It's simply the worst junk, everything is old-fashioned, the adaptive speed pilot is choppy, the driving is choppy and the lane assistant is simply so poor that it shouldn't be activated. The gearbox in no way gives a smooth ride and so there is no power in the driveline. The feeling is that you drive with the handbrake applied. In such an expensive car you have to say total dump character. We have a Suzuki Vitara with 140 hp petrol engine, automatic transmission and adaptive speed pilot in the company. It runs far better, more comfortable and much smoother, but at 1/3 of the price. The Volvo XC90 is simply a joke, built to impress Chinese, but Volvo is also Chinese owned.
