Recently purchased the 2018 SXL version, replacing a similarly loaded 2012 Sorento. Virtually every one of our (short list of) complaints we had about the 2012 model has been addressed in the 2018 model along with a raft of additional features, mainly in the driver assistance and safety categories. Our 2012 model had been trouble free over nearly 70,000 miles so we were inclined to believe the 2018 version would be reliable. The excellent KIA warranty only added to that confidence. We live in the Pacific Northwest where sloppy weather in the winter, especially for ski trips in mountains, makes AWD a near necessity. Our 2012 Sorento handled those duties very well. The same is true of our new Sorento. I seldom trade a vehicle for the same brand/model and we did seriously consider the Ford Edge Sport before our purchase. We very rarely need a 3rd row of seats so the 2.7L V6 in the Edge Sport was a tempting alternative, especially for me. Still, this is mainly my wife's car and she strongly preferred the KIA, mainly due to her familiarity with and affection for the Sorento and her dislike of the VERY long distance from the driver's position to the windshield in the Edge. (YMMV). And while the 3rd row of seats is seldom needed for our family of three plus a 60 lb dog, being a chauffeur for a gaggle of teenage girls is an occasional short trip duty. (Don't count on seating for 7 AND luggage, though. It's an either/or proposition.) All in all, I've been very impressed by KIA's commitment to incremental improvements in their vehicles even within model cycles. Minor and even fairly major complaints were addressed from one model year to the next. Suspension harshness in our 2012 model was addressed in 2013. And low ratings of the 2017 model headlights were rectified in 2018, for example. If a compact CUV is a bit on the small size and other midsize alternatives feel like buses, the Sorento is an ideal alternative. And if spending near $40K (or more) for a KIA seems crazy, you simply haven't driven their vehicles in recent years.

Similarly, I went from the 2011 Kia Sorento SX V6 AWD to the 2016 Kia Sorento SX-L Limited 2.0 Turbo. The upgraded safety features as well as the relative simple process to upgrade the UVO navigation system to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto made this my happiest car purchase ever. The ride quality and sound isolation is comparable or better than my wife’s last Lexus RX Hybrid. I wish they had continued the Turbo as an engine option into model year 2017 when they fixed the throw distance and added road following headlights. But I enjoy the fuel savings and slightly extra torque of the smaller engine. This was our third Kia as my wife traded it that aforementioned Lexus RX Hybrid for a 2018 Kia Sportage SX Turbo which she loves! Apple CarPlay still not being available on most Toyota and Lexus models in 2019 and starting on Kia in 2015 should make one wonder which is the real luxury brand!

I test drove a used 2017 Sorento SXL today as a possible SUV replacement for my 2014 Avalon Hybrid Limited (my needs changed since buying the Avalon). I like the carrying capacity and also the towing capacity with the V-6 AWD (5,000 pounds) that the RAV4 and Rogue can't match, and even some larger vehicles such as the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave fall short. It has all the bells & whistles my Avalon Limited has, plus a few more. My short list right now is very short, either a Highlander or the Sorento.

Hay Alex! As a subscriber, I watch your reviews all the time and find them very informative. Your child seat and infotainment segments show how detailed you are. Above and beyond a simple vehicle review and I appreciate that. It was one of the reasons I went ahead and purchased a 2016 Kia Sedona SX and though we are very happy with our new van, there's just one thing we really hate that has never been brought up, at least not as far as I know. The push button start is great but there are limitations as to what you can do when it comes to remote starters. We had a dealer installed, KIA brand remote starter installed before delivery and it is very limited in functionality. To start the vehicle, you press the lock button on the fob and then the start button on the fob...the van locks and starts. But when I attempt to unlock and open the sliding doors for the kids to get in prior to us leaving the house, the van shuts off. When I open the rear gate to put things in there when we've been shopping, the van shuts off. When I try to turn on the heated seats and rear defrost for my wife in the mornings, the van shuts off. According to my dealer and a few aftermarket installation shops in town, this is the way it has to be due to the push button start system. Through a detailed explanation, I know know why it works that way but had I of known prior to the purchase, I might have gone with another vehicle with all our required options but with a keyed ignition. Remote start is very important here in Canada and it should be integrated into the vehicle's systems better than Kia has done. From what I've been told, this is an issue with keyless ignition systems, no matter the brand of vehicle. Could you let others know about the issues surrounding the keyless ignition and it's relationship with the remote starter system? Thanks

@greetrigh288 жыл бұрын
so what did you end up getting?
@sergevivier9568 жыл бұрын
Well before I tell you, let me say that the Sorento I drove was the base so I gave the keys back to the sales manager and told him about the wind noise. He said that he never new that but the strange thing is that the more expensive Sorentos have a better windshield and is quitter according to info found on the Kia website. Sales people don't know what they are selling.Now if you have a family, the Sorento is the safest and best for the price with a great ride, the Santa fee sports ride was not good at all so we bought a Lexus NX base with the 17" tires. If the roads where you live are good, you may like the Santa fee style better
@greetrigh288 жыл бұрын
+serge vivier Wow, that's funny because the Lexus was in my top 3 choices along with the Santa Fe. I just want a V6 engine. Rav 4 doesn't have it anymore. I'm a Toyota guy for years.
@sergevivier9568 жыл бұрын
Well the Rav 4 is out of this league , in fact the 2016 rav 4 is one of the worst vehicle I have driven in a long time. The NX is on the Rav 4 platform with better everything and the new turbo in the NX is a masterpiece of engineering with a 7 years 110k warranty. V6 are smooth and powerful, I drove V8 and then V6 for about 20 years, now I like turbo engines better because of the high torque at low RPM.
@JBM4253 жыл бұрын
@@sergevivier956 Kia uses acoustic (sound-insulating) glass windshields in the LX, EX, SX, and SXL models, and acoustic side windows on the front seats in the EX, SX, and SXL models. That makes a big difference in wind noise. I test drove a used 2017 Sorento SXL and took it on the interstate on a rainy day, and it was just as quiet as my Toyota Avalon Limited which also has acoustic glass in the windshield and side windows (my needs have changed since buying the Avalon, so I'm looking at switching to SUVs).

You can get the passenger in from the driver side if you first slide the seat forward and then release the bottom lever to let it fall forward. Works pretty well! Considering the larger leg and headroom compared to Highlander and CX-9 you need to bump your 3rd row rating on this to 8/10 atleast.

@JBM4253 жыл бұрын
It even tows more than some larger SUVs; the GMC Acadia and its sibling Buick Enclave can only tow 4,000 pounds with their V-6 AWD systems. It's the equal of the Highlander, and only the Grand Cherokee/Dodge Durango and Nissan Pathfinder can tow more with their V-6 engines... but do you really trust towing 6,000 pounds with the Pathfinder's CVT?

Nice review Alex. Also the Sorento also earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus. Reliable, Luxurious, High Quality, this Sorento is on my short list of the Cross over to get. I still love my Cherokee in many ways, but when the time comes, I may defect from Jeep to Kia. If I cannot swing easily enough a Grand Cherokee, I will never be let down in the Sorento as my next choice. The Sorento really has hit the right buttons for me.
@JBM4253 жыл бұрын
In October 2020, I rented a Grand Cherokee Limited with the Luxury Group package which included heated/cooled perforated leather seats, and today (Jan 2021) I test drove a used 2017 Sorento SXL. I would say that if you are looking at used vehicles, the Sorento drives better or at least less like a "land yacht" than the GC; if you need more towing capacity (6,000 pounds for the V-6 GC versus 5,000 for the V-6 AWD Sorento, and 7,500 for the V-8 GC), you'll have to go with the GC. Be forewarned: Kia has cut some features out of the redesigned 2021 Sorento SXL, so if you want some of the nicer options, you may now have to go up one level to the larger Kia Telluride.
@chrisbrownaz8 жыл бұрын
I'm considering getting this as my next vehicle and the fact that the trims I like come with a third row that I don't need don't bother me one bit. I'll just leave the third row down. Problem solved.
@johnfurious84199 жыл бұрын
Nice but I see the Nissan Murano as more of a competitor to this vehicle than the Rogue and also much nicer..... The gas mileage with the V6 compared to that of the Murano with the V6 also makes this vehicle less attractive. Nonetheless the 3rd row option is a significant consideration for those who want that option. Thanks again for a stellar review.
@JBM4253 жыл бұрын
I have test driven both, and while the Murano Platinum is very nice, the Sorento SXL is at least on par with the Murano Platinum in terms of bells & whistles, possibly nicer. I was a bit disappointed that the engine that felt so peppy in a Maxima seemed weak in the Murano, whereas the Sorento had plenty of power accelerating on the interstate and coming off the line at traffic lights. One significant advantage for the Sorento: the Murano is rated to only tow 1,500 pounds even with that V-6 (which isn't a whole lot better than the Rogue's 1,000 pound capability with a four-banger), while the Sorento with AWD and a V-6 is rated to tow 5,000 pounds. And then, there's the 800-pound gorilla in the room: the Nissan CVT. One must be extremely scrupulous about changing the CVT fluid at recommended intervals (about 30,000 miles in normal driving, and 22,000 in "severe service" such as mountain travel or high mileage in a short period). In fairness to the Murano, one of my co-workers has a 2019 Murano SV, and she really likes it so far. That actually is not a bad deal in lower end trim; its "zero gravity" cloth seats are the most comfortable I've found in lower-trim cars.

I have test-driven a Sorento SXL (my current car is a Toyota Avalon Hybrid Limited). Let me tell you, you get your money's worth in the SXL trim compared to the top trim of other SUVs (don't forget the $45K is MSRP; actual selling price is usually a couple grand less). The 2017 Sorento SXL is fully equipped, whereas some other makes top trim such as the GMC Acadia Denali are not fully equipped. Still, you really do get a high-quality interior that genuinely rivals the Avalon or even the likes of the near-luxury brands such as Acura or Lexus (and without the quirky infotainment system of the Lexus). Don't believe me? Find one and test drive it as I have. I would even take a look at the mid-level EX trim; that one goes for around $33K MSRP with the V-6 and AWD, but is still pretty well equipped and usually with more features for the price than the likes of the Edge.

Great review as always. I found the Sorento to match up very favorably to all the competitors you mentioned. It’s a 2 or 3 row version of an Edge or Murano. One thing that I think should be considered is Kia’s Sedona, I spec’d a SXL Sorento FWD to a SXL Sedona and the Sedona is a $1,000 cheaper and more practical while not looking much worse except in profile with the obvious sliding door tracks. What I really want to see is Mazda’s new CX-9, it should have the styling and performance from a handling perspective, I just hope it doesn’t come with only a 4 cylinder.

2017 Kia Sorento doesn't have 4 way adjustable headrest. Headrest only goes up and down, and it's at its most forward position. The manual and quick start guide comes with the car mentions the forward and backward adjustment. Apparently dealers have received a "kit" late December that has white stickers that covers the manual pages. This is an ergonomics issue and Kia removed this quietly. Because the headrest is so forward it makes driving uncomfortable. I'm not sure how this will be addressed.

Sinan Uşşaklı I test drove one last weekend and noticed this. At 6'4" the bottom front of the headrests were actually hitting the top of my shoulders. Even at the top most position. Not comfortable at all.

Kevin Smits I noticed this too late, I now own the car :). however if you tilt the seat back a bit the way you sit changes and it no longer bothers THAT much, still I prefer Kia addresses this issue

Whats's your opinion on the 2.4L engine versions? here in Panama they only offer that engine in a serie of versions... three actually, i'm very interested in a "Limited version" they offer, it comes with leather seats, three rows, dual A/C, AWD, 360° cameras, cruise control, Bluetooth, vent seats, Assisted braking and more... but all versions powered by the 2.4L, so it is really worth buy this crossover? i like it so much, but i think that 2.4L engine doesn't pays off in power terms.

+Juan Arévalo It's still a good value. The 2.4 will give you excellent fuel economy for a car this size

Thank you Mr. Alex. Another question... what's your opinion on the Toyota land Cruiser Prado?
@AAutoBuyersGuide8 жыл бұрын
+Juan Arévalo I really cannot comment since the Prado is not sold in the USA. The closest we get is the Lexus GX which is heavily based on the Prado but obviously much more expensive.

Alex, other reviewers (such as Cooley) rate the non-R/T Durangos handling as somewhat tippy and soft. When comparing this to Durangos, which version of the Durango are you comparing it to?
@AAutoBuyersGuide8 жыл бұрын
+Bruno TaTa I agree that the Durango is soft, but handling depends mainly on tire size in that model. The base model still handles well for the weight and size of the SUV, much better than a corresponding Chevy Traverse for instance. Although the suspension is soft it is well designed and does not get easily upset.

Alex I have a bit of an unusual question for you. I'm looking at a loaded SXL Sorento or waiting for a used XC90 in either Inscription or R-Design trim. I love the Volvo but the Kia can be had for under $40k in my area and seems to have an extreme amount of value. So given the option of those two, new Sorento or used XC90 what are your thuoghts?
@AAutoBuyersGuide8 жыл бұрын
+Steve S This is a tricky thing. I think the XC90 is the better car, it's more luxurious, it's safety ratings are off the chart and it has more features than you'll find on the Kia. That said the question is value. Is the XC90 a better value than the Sorento? No. Is the nicer badge worth the difference? Are the safety gadgets and other things worth the extra $10-20K? That's a personal decision and if the answer isn't "yes" then you know your answer.

Alex, your car reviews are top notch - much appreciated! I would gladly buy one of these '16 Sorento LX SUVs IF I could obtain one with the V6, leather seats and the navigation system without being forced to get a vehicle with the idiotic "panoramic" roof (Technology Package). Not only do my family not like them, Kia has a serious problem with over 200 exploding sunroofs with the 2011-15 Sorentos. Kia is making a major league mistake jamming these packages down the throats of potential buyers.
@AAutoBuyersGuide8 жыл бұрын
+Kevan Morrison Yea, bundling is part of how Kia keeps prices low (it's an inventory thing) but it does result in that kind of problem.

Know what's much better than this? A Highlander.
@eskieman39486 жыл бұрын
You know what's bigger (noticeably bigger) than this? A Highlander. You know what doesn't have a passenger seat height adjustment even at it's highest (most expensive) level of trim, or Apple Play, or a 10 year/100k warranty, but Kia does? A Highlander. The word "better" can be a relative thing.

I am a Toyota guy; I traded my 2007 Camry for a 2014 Avalon Hybrid. I am now in the market for a SUV because my needs have changed. After having test-driven both a Highlander Limited and the Sorento SXL, the Kia compares extremely favorably.
