Alex. Besides the boost when needed, no one talks about Onyx front facing camera that is greatly appreciated on close front manuvering. Also the XT has a high torque transmission that is markedly different from the one in the 2.5. Ive had 3 Outbacks, 2 with the 2.5 and the year+ old '22 with the 2.4 DIT. Phenomenal drive system! Hope i never have to go back. The difference in mileage is minuscule for the difference between the two. Tho i liked the 2.5 I'd never driven the 2.4. Anyone undecided should drive both before deciding IMO.
@WhiTor12 жыл бұрын
In your experience with both, is the XT quieter road noise wise? We are currently leaning toward XT Limited or Touring but haven’t driven the non XT. We did drive a Forester 2.5 before the Outback Touring XT and noticed a different but not sure if that’s a model difference or 2.5 v 2.4.

Hi Alex. Thanks for the video. Subaru Australia has just released details about our 2023 Outback line up. The exterior has not been updated but we will now get the 2.4 litre turbo. Power output is 183kW and 350 Nm. These are down 10kW / 25 Nm on the US model. Though our towing capacity for the turbo is 2400kg/ 5300lbs. 240 kg tow ball down load. XT is available on midspec Sport and top tier Touring models.

Purchased a 2022 Subaru OB Touring XT a few months ago and drive it to Canada from No. California. 2300 miles round trip. 28.2 mpg. Turbo was nice when passing big trucks. Adaptive cruise control worked very well. I like that the speed limit is posted next to the speedometer--while in BC, the car converts the metric to miles per hour and posts so it is easily seen. I found the driver's seat uncomfortable with my bad back and bought a seat "wedge" that fixed that problem nicely.
@williamerskine60352 жыл бұрын
Alex, glad your back making videos. BTW, there is a visual 'tell' on the front of the Outbacks. On the 2.5L cars, the top section of grill (above the badge) is filled in solid. On the XT's that area is open and ducted (via ducting on the underside of the hood) to the intercooler.

I’ve been driving European cars my whole life then decided to go for a Subaru. Best decision ever because this car is an absolute pleasure to drive. It’s extremely comfortable and spacious. I've had a helluva time deciding between a Forester and a Outback. I like the Forester for its value, higher seating position and incredible visibility and I like the Outback for its overall comfort/ride quality and of course the turbo engine. I actually ordered a 2023 Forester Touring at the beginning of Oct but I canceled it 3 weeks in and switched to the Outback Onyx XT. As a lifelong driving enthusiast and a previous WRX owner, I knew I wouldn't be satisfied with the 2.5 and the Outback Onyx is the least expensive way to get the 2.4 turbo. I certainly didn't want to spend this much, but I am getting the VIP program price and a $750 loyalty discount, so I'm paying about $37k, including $800 in accessories...not too bad! I'm glad I changed my mind before it was too late.

I have a 2021 Legacy Touring XT and at the time I bought it the dealer only had that model. In retrospect wish I'd shopped around other dealerships to get a Limited with the 2.5 and without moonroof, navigation and Driver Focus package. While the brown nappa leather interior is beautiful and the ventilated seats are nice and the turbo is fun sometimes, I don't think they were worth an extra $5,500. Plus the better MPG would be helpful right now. So yeah, if I were shopping for an Outback I'd get the naturally aspirated 2.5.

We have a ‘22 XT Touring. And, it really bugs me that Subaru decided to not make any exterior differences between the two. I really wish they incorporated a hood scoop like the older XTs had. I think it makes a huge difference in the appearance of the vehicle. I think the XTs (non Onyx or Wilderness) should have different rims, grill and actually have dual exhaust tips. I know why they keep them tucked under - for better a departure angle. But…certainly there’s something that could have been done. I have many issues with the car, exterior appearance aside. It is quick though. And, more fun to drive than the older ones.

In 1990 when I bought my new Honda with a 4cyl and a 4spd automatic transmission, I got 33mpg on the freeway. Granted my Honda was not an AWD. I put my wife in a 2020 XT Onyx after she had a 2016 Premium. The 2.5 liter is SO DAMN SLOW. Merging on to the freeway is an exercise in hope you don't get Peterbilt colonic. As an engineer I deal with piston engines for aircraft in our production a lot. Turbo charged engines by design are going to require more maintenance and have more complexity but they give you that kick and extra HP. Also when you go to higher altitudes (5000 feet plus), the Turbo takes away the decrease in power you'd get with normally aspirated engines. But maintenance and reliability wise it does not make sense that Turbo engine would be better. May be there are specific issues in this line.

Then drove the XT and was impressed by the obvious power difference. I did not think the 2.5 was underpowered until I drove the XT - I still don't. The 2.5 is certainly adequate. However, living in the Sierra, I thought the XT would be better for the hills. The big difference, in my opinion, is the turbo's lack a linear accelerator pull. Hit the pedal on the XT and zoom, you are gone. The turbo makes optimizing throttle response nearly impossible whereas the non-turbo follows the command on your right foot in a predictable manner. Can't do anything about the $45k turbo choice now, so i just try and ignore the jerky throttle response. Averaging 23.4 mpg, less than the 29 mpg window sticker claim. Perhaps the 3.6 would provide the extra power and be more linear in acceleration. Had I known the XT was getting

Good thing you didn't drive the 3.6R, you'd be like me, Subaru doesn't make a car that I would buy anymore. Gonna keep my 3.6 till I die.

The gas pedal feels jerky because it is your first boosted Subaru. Try different drive modes, put the gear selector to the left ( manual mode) and see how incredibly linear the car accelerates with little rpm change.
@abidfarooqui48992 жыл бұрын
All turbos are like that. There is a slight lag for the boost to build. Electronic tricks can try and make it more linear using the computer. Maybe they will play with it and come up with new firmware to make it a bit more linear. Turbos in general never produce linear power

I just learned that a new Subaru SUV is coming. I wonder what that would be. Hopefully it will have a square trunk, as the usability was the reason for purchasing my Forester :)

Hi Alex why does Subaru keep persevering with full gasoline engines in the Forester and Outback i was hoping by now they would have had at least a decent Hybrid version to compete with other manufacturers? They seem to be getting left way behind.

I have a 2018 Outback 3.6R Touring. I’m crushed that Subaru discontinued the 3.6R Outback. It means my 2018 Outback will be my last Subaru. I will drive it until it falls apart, and if I live that long, I’ll have to see what else is on the market in a V6. What a shame.

What is Subaru going to do in 2036 when you can no longer buy a gasoline powered vehicle in CA, WA, and OR?
@alexpmo2 жыл бұрын
We have the Solterra coming out soon which is an EV. My guess is they will have EV alternatives to the existing models. Like an Outbacks EV and Forester EV.
@Doc18552 жыл бұрын
@@alexpmo I hope so Alex, but our gasoline tax is what pays for our road, highway and freeway maintenance. So how are we supposed to pay for that when everyone is driving an EV?
@Marshdom32 жыл бұрын
@@Doc1855 oh don’t worry. State governments will collect their share of the road tax from EV’s through a special or separate EV registration fee through the DMV. Some states are also considering adding a road tax for public charging stations as well, but most EV users charge at home…

@@Marshdom3 I live in WA state and if you own an EV then every year when you register your EV they add an additional $250 a year to your reg. In Oregon they charge you a tax that’s added to your registration for the amount of miles you drive.

The 2.4T/TR690 combo feels like the hardware is outrunning the software. Power delivery is inconsistent, and so is the faux gear shifts. The 2.5/TR580 is certainly a bit more refined and seems to work a little better together. Perhaps the refinements from the WRX will work their way over to other models.

I'd have to agree. I think with time the 2.4T will get better
