With my extensive roof rack experience I can add that unused roof racks aren't in the way of anything. We just use them when needed and ignore them when we don't. Wind noise? Ive never knowingly encountered that, but I only admittedly can't say. Even then I would need to quantify it against all of the other road noise sources which probably makes them a minor contributor with their aerodynamic shape. Speaking of aerodynamics, I did actual fuel consumption testing on my outback both with and without a full size clamshell enclosure on the roof. If anything, such a large object would affect fuel consumption quite a bit more than the rails themselves. The fact is that the clamshell hardly affected fuel mileage at all. Nearly identical on the order of 1 or 2 percent. I even drove the exact same 90 mile route round trip in similar weather, and paid attention to speed with cruise control. Unstreamlined blunt faced loads do make a difference, but not the commercially made wedge shaped ones. That being the case, there's nothing to be concerned with over fuel consumption and roof rails.

@@polliwogg8485 I imagine you'd need to be in possession of the electronic key in order to use that feature.

One more "feature"regarding the roof rack. Because of the swing feature of the cross bars , there is an exposed hole in the top of the side rails on each side. If you live in an area that uses salt and maybe even sand, material can get trapped inside the side rails that won't wash out in a car wash. An effective and cheap solution is to stop at your hardware and pick up 2 #7 rubber stoppers. They fit snuggly and require no tools for instalation or removal.

One note, and I saw that YOU did it, but you did not explain what you are doing and it is CRITICAL for the auto hands free tailgate feature to work. When you get your hand or elbow near the emblem, listen for a tone or beep, then step WELL BACK and the tailgate will open. If you do NOT step back. The tailgate will NOT OPEN. Many owners do not know about the tone, and what they are supposed to do when they hear it. It is a safety feature. Subaru did not want to knock over a bunch of elderly shoppers with their power gate, so they have a sensor back there that not only senses you want in but that you are CLEAR of the gate before it is allowed to open. One other thing about the roof rack system is you can change the location of the rear bar if you want a longer span between the rails. With the star screwdriver in your spare tire area you just remove the centre of the locking pin, and switch the location with the centre screw of the rear bar. They can still be stored the same way as originally designed!

Great Video Alex but honestly at the dealership there is supposed to be a product specialist who is supposed to go over all of the features of the car before delivery. One really great one was turn on the rear window defroster to stop the start stop thing. They later updated the screen software to put that switch onto top screen. If you have any input to Subaru please tell them we want a real set of buttons for the heated seats. Going down a menu to get to adjust them makes you take your eyes off the road.

You didn’t discuss the forward looking anti collision system, that brings on the brakes if you get too close to another car or object. Also rear Audio warning sensor...if you get to close to a object, but don’t rely on this better to get out and have a look before reversing. Another feature is sports mode that gives you about 15% more power for overtaking and climbing lanes. Do not leave this on though as your fuel consumption increases as well, so switch back to I mode for normal driving.

Sports mode only increases power at part-throttle, not at full-throttle. I've taken my '17 Forester XT to the drag strip (purely in the interests of science, of course) and both S and S# modes are actually measurably SLOWER (say, 0.5 sec and 2-3 mph in the 1/4 mile) than regular D(I) mode, because the transmission no longer runs the engine at a steady 5800 rpm (where horsepower peak comes, for my car). Instead S and S# give gear ratio shifts and the engine spends some time not a peak power.

Citroen used it on the DS which also had high level rear indicators (maybe a precursor to high level brake lights) a d a cool one spoke steering wheel. They have always been pretty forward thinking. The hydrodynamic suspension, double glazing (of sorts).

Great vid as always! I wish the Forester has that roof rail crossbar feature 😔
@alexpmo3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Austin! Yeah, I’m not sure why they haven’t included that on the forester or really any of the other models.
@marksandstrom42483 жыл бұрын
the Forester's bars and rails are a lot less clunky-looking, and the crossbars can be removed or installed in only 10 minutes or so, if you haven't lost the Torx screwdriver that comes in the glovebox. I especially like removing them in sunroof season. (Remember Outback doesn't have the big sunroof, that may be another reason.)
@alexpmo3 жыл бұрын
@@marksandstrom4248 yeah, it doesn’t take that long to add or remove the crossbars on the forester. Even 10 minutes seems so much longer when compared to the less than 1 minute it takes to do the outback crossbars lol.

These aren’t really hidden features, a hidden feature to me is on the outback you can set the tailgate door to not open as high if your garage isn’t as tall/high like some others so the tail gate doesn’t hit the roof of the garage.
@alexpmo3 жыл бұрын
I totally forgot about the memory tailgate feature. That's a good one to include in a future video. So thanks for the idea! I appreciate it!

Two months ago we bought a 2024 Forester-Touring. What features are the same compared 😮to the same year outback? To illustrate, the wave feature on the back power door is only on the outback however the headlights follow the steering on both vehicles. Thanks for keeping us informed. There are more features on Subaru vehicles than space x is my belief. LOL! A great product.

Alex great video… separate question… is there any way to have the AVH (auto vehicle hold) remain permanently ON? This feature shuts off every time the car is turned off. I use this AVH every time I use the Outback and would like to find a way to have this feature on even when I start up the car. Thanks!

Me too. Seems a bit of an oversight as its a very useful feature if you're constsntantly stuck at traffic lights (I guess you have time to switch it on if you're stuck at a light!)

Hi Alex, Thx for your great videos. I want to ask you something. I own a Subaru Outback Touring 2.5L Dec’21 what coilovers would you recommend me for improving drive in motorway and high speed roads. I don’t use it for off-road, just beach, snow and very easy tarmac, basically I want to improve the stiffness on the road. Thanks a lot

Alex, we have a 2021 Outback Limited Touring XT, and I've been trying to get an answer about the traffic sign recognition feature. When we're on a state or county highway, the speed limit signs show up just fine, but when we're on local streets, signs don't show up at all. I've done the car software update and updated the maps, but still no go. Is the sign recognition function supposed to recognize local street speed limits or only more major road speed limits? I've made call after call to Subaru to rep after rep, but I still can't get anyone to answer that question. Thanks for your very informative videos!

Hey Alex, I enjoy your channel as I purchased a 2024 premium Outback earlier this year. I love this car but unfortunately one thing about it does not love me back--and that is as a woman on the short side, the top mount gas pedal has caused me to have nerve pain across the ball of my foot. I have tried adjusting the seat position to no benefit. I've taken it to the dealer and they have nothing to offer in way of a remedy. I have seen some pedal modification options available on-line that I may try before I give up my Outback, but I am wondering if you have any experience addressing this problem for other folks? Thanks!

Just traded in my 2005 Wrangler Unlimited with 90k miles for a white 22 white Outback Premium with package 13. I always said I would never get rid of my JEEP. Loved my JEEP, but it was time. Getting a little older and getting into a lifted vehicle was not a problem. It was noisy, bumpy, horrible on gas, and my wife has a bad knee so climbing into the JEEP was an issue. I know others say it's underpowered, I guess it is compared to other vehicles. The Outback is just fine with me. Drove it home and I kept up with traffic. I was able to "PASS" a car that was doing about 30 in a 45. Guess I dont need that " PUSH YOU INTO THE SEAT " throttle response. Would it be nice? Of course! But I dont need it. The screen some people hate is okay with me. Coming from an 07 Charger SXT and an 05 Wrangler, this is space age for me. My wife drives an 18 RAV4 and the screen on the Outback makes the one in the RAV look small. One thing I can say is that it's easier to navigate the touchscreen on the RAV4. But, I dont poke the screen every 2 minutes. It's set and thats it. I'm super excited with my 22 Outback Premium in Crystal White Pearl. Let's see where it takes us.

Great video! I always thought you have to keep the fob close to the tailgate to open the trunk, my car won't open in the back by just waving my hand over the Subaru logo. For that reason I keep my fob on a carabiner on my pant belt. (Incidentally, I never loose my car keys anymore). I never knew you could store the trunk-cover-roll-thingy in the bottom of the trunk! Maybe it's listed in the book that came with the car but who has time to read the whole thing, I bet not many.
