Southwest and Air Canada both had engine issues and had to emergency land on one engine just moving the 737 Max on a ferry flight. What else is wrong with it? They flew for 1.5 years before they started crashing. Southwest had a deal with Boeing that it would cost Boeing $1 million per plane if new training was required for the Max. That's why MCAS was removed from the flight manual and pilots knew nothing about it. Until they started crashing.

@bobbraan87063 жыл бұрын
MCAS still can't handle a AOA sensor failure. That's what started the crashes sequence. Only 2 sensors not 3 so when one fails MCAS shuts off now instead of crashing the plane but the pilot suddenly has to handle the pitch up condition caused by the wrong engine placement. It's still NOT fixed. 3 are required for redundancy and is the standard for Airbus. The EU was going to require 3. AOA sensors are vulnerable to bird strikes. Usually right after takeoff, near the ground.
@jviation7373 жыл бұрын
@@bobbraan8706 Hence why the EASA requested that Boeing add synthetic airspeed to compensate for that. Now, it has to read from both and in the event both agree it'll then activate. Add that on top of synthetic airspeed and it's a quite reliable system

@@jviation737 One Kluge after another. MCAS shuts off on AOA sensor disagree. Right after takeoff at low altitude when bird strikes are likely. So now the plane pitches up instead of down. MCAS is a software Kluge to compensate for the hardware Kluge of wrong engine placement. 3 AOA sensors are required for proper redundancy. Like Airbus has as standard. A Transport Canada safety official said MCAS has to go because it introduces "catastrophic hazards that weren't there before". TC required an OFF switch to be added for MCAS.

Glad to see it back in the skies. I am sure I read once that when these planes first came out you could opt for a few extra safety measures (which could prevent the sensor errors that occurred.) I believe both West Jet opted for at least one or both of them. The two airlines that unfortunately had the accidents had none of them. I also believe that what aided in those two planes crashing was the pilots unaware of what was going on with the sensors. (Making the plane think it was nose up thus afraid of a stall so it pushed the nose down to gain airspeed)so they kept forcing it back up only to lose the battle. These planes are great to have back. I would have no issue flying them.
@TheOwenMajor3 жыл бұрын
The pilots were incapable, sorry but that is the truth. The pilots turned a minor trim computer issue into a fatal accident. The procedure to fix a trim malfunction is simple, just a few steps. Yet the pilots who lacked training and skill simply turned their brains off when something happened they didn't expect.
@rulinghabs3 жыл бұрын
@@TheOwenMajor I don’t know about that. Boeing quietly added the MCAS system with no pilot retraining. The Ethiopian pilots did disengage the system but still struggled to control the plane. It was assumed that the plan is still essentially a 40 year old model, but due to the larger repositioned engines they had to add new systems.
@TheOwenMajor3 жыл бұрын
@@rulinghabs "added the MCAS system with no pilot retraining." Pilot training is the responsibility of the airline. It was a quiet addition because it was simply a new mode on an existing system(Auto Trim). The knowledge of the MCAS system is of ZERO use to pilots, as it is the automated trim system(Of which MCAS works upon) that they control. ------------------------------ "The Ethiopian pilots did disengage the system but still struggled to control the plane." And here is the big whopper, they left full T/O thrust on the entire flight. In their panic, they forgot to decrease thrust. The reason the trim malfunction procedure calls for reducing thurst(And thus speed) after turning off the trim motor, is that increase airspeed exasperates trim issues and increases the resistance on manual trim control. Had the Ethiopian pilots simply reduced power as the procedure called for, the trim issue caused by the MCAS malfunction would have disappeared, and they could manually set the correct trim. But they didn't. In their panic, they forgot simple and basic procedures.

Well said. I don't get all these "experts" who refuse to step on to one of these planes. I mean do you really think they would re-certify them after two years without scrutinizing the living hell out of these things?? No way in hell they'd allow them back in the skies unless they were completely satisfied that they're safe to do so. I'll get on one any day.

I'm sure it's now the safest airplane you can fly. Great video!

Apparently the 737 MAX still has issues with its angle of attack sensor (AOA) and quality issues, but hopefully there won't be any more accidents.
@bobbraan87063 жыл бұрын
Now it pitches up not down when an AOA is damaged because MCAS shuts off. Still only 2 sensors not 3. 3 is required for proper redundancy so you know which one is bad.

@@bobbraan8706 Are there normally 3 AOA sensors on other aircraft? (just wondering, I'm not really familiar with this)
@bobbraan87063 жыл бұрын
@@josky1989 Yes. 3 sensors and 3 flight computers is common on modern, new aircraft. 737 Max only has 2 of each. The crashes wouldn't have happened if Boeing had followed safety standards where a critical safety system relies on sensors, especially ones vulnerable to bird strikes etc. Most aircraft don't fly so poorly that MCAS is needed. In that case 3 are required. 737 Max wouldn't pass certification as an all new aircraft for this and many other reasons. It's all grandfathered in. It's really a dinosaur from the 60s. "Its most advanced planes, for instance, have three flight computers that function independently, with each computer containing three different processors manufactured by different companies. So even some of the people who have worked on Boeing’s new 737 MAX airplane were baffled to learn that the company had designed an automated safety system that abandoned the principles of component redundancy, ultimately entrusting the automated decision-making to just one sensor - a type of sensor that was known to fail. Boeing’s rival, Airbus, has typically depended on three such sensors. “A single point of failure is an absolute no-no,” said one former Boeing engineer who worked on the MAX, " 3 are needed so when one fails you go with the other 2 that agree.

@@josky1989 No. 2 AoA sensors is standard on conventional planes. B747, 757, 767, MD-11, they all have 2 as well. 3 is standard on Airbus fly-by-wire planes, but their flight control computers are far more intervening than MCAS. Boeing FBW planes (777/787) have 2 AoA sensors plus some kind of virtual backup I believe, however I'm not familiar with the details on this, but they have 2 real AoA sensors as well, not 3. Planes like the ATRs, Fokker 70/100 for example have so-called stick pushers which actively push the yoke forward in a stall situation, and they also rely on 2 AoA sensors, which hasn't been a problem so far. The 737 MAX is still a conventional plane where the yoke is mechanically connected to the control surfaces using cable and pulleys. It can't be compared to the flight control computer system of the Airbus planes, hence saying that the MAX needs 3 AoA sensors just because Airbus planes do, isn't a fair comparison.

I’d jump on the MAX tomorrow if I could. I was supposed to fly on it two years ago with Southwest but the flight got changed due to weather so I missed out.
