After 25 years without a bike I found a really nice 06 a few years ago, put new Michilens on, windshield and good to go. Plenty of power for me, I like secondary roads 40 to 50 mph just checking out crops. Really just ride like a big moped. Hit burger places just enjoy the machine and scenery. The c50 is a good bike to be sure, however you should understand why the Harley sells for much more, bigger more powerful engine, high quality crome, and steel fenders. There is also another factor that may not be you, it's steep in American folklore, it's not a tangible feature, but a romantic quality simply beyond any other motorcycle except Indian. I've had many bikes of all types, but it's my Softail heritage that calls to me when lam missing riding the most. I loved my magna 750, I loved my goldwing, I still enjoy other bikes, but no machine can replace my 2014 heritage. And I used to think they were not worth the money , until I owned this bike, and put 50 thousand trouble free miles on it. And if you ever own a one made after 012 , I am sure you too will have good experience too, but I confess I don't have any experience with the new +8 models. Try it ,just once, and the thought that you were not missing out long anything will evaporate . Good luck, keep both wheels down 🦅

Well, any Harley aside from a Sportster is just a better bike. Better build quality, better motor that can easily be rebuilt every 100k and last forever, Better highway manners, better materials. I mean, I have a C50T and while it IS a decent little bike it is in no way comparable to any Harley cruiser. You kids are dreaming. You're probably blind and ignorant too. You all need to stop coping so hard over the fact you can't afford a top quality bike and just enjoy things for what they are. Be real. You really need a windshield for that kind of riding. I have taken it up the switchback on Painted Cave road in Santa Barbara and was so pleased at how maneuverable it is. Mine is a 2005. Most reliable motorcycle I have ever owned. The fact that they are STILL making the same model in 2022 as they did in 2005 says it all. Reliable, Easy to maintain, solid and easy to handle.

Very good/accurate review. I bought a used 2006 C50T (in 2010) as my first bike (days after getting my license). I still have it, and love it as much as the first day I bought it. In the 10 years that I've riding it, the only issue that I had with it was a dead battery in 2014 (it was the original battery from 2006!!). It requires minimal maintenance, which almost anyone can do themselves with a few basic tools (oil/filter change, spark plugs, coolant, drive-shaft oil, brake pads, etc.). I know a lot of people that bought a smaller cc bike to start riding, only to have to sell and buy something else as they got more experienced. The C50 is a bike that you can start with, and continue to hold onto for many years. One of the best purchases I've ever made.

I dig it. I just bought a 2012 with the 'T" package and 9K miles. If your wants and needs are anything like mine, you are going to dig it too. I haven't ridden for 30 years, since I was in my early 20s. Tom Cruise did two things to me in the 80s: He put me n the navy and he put me on a crotch rocket. They were al the rage back then, and everyone my age rode them. But I haven't ridden for 30 years, and I had no intention to start again here at age 53. Then, one of my daughters got into riding when she grew up, and I saw a golden opportunity to spend some more time with her before it's too late. So I bought this bike and taught myself how to ride again. I don't want to be particularly fast, so long as I am not slow. It had to have that cool, old school look. It had to be light enough where I could pick it up by myself, when I set it down while re-learning. It had to be comfortable, because I am a disabled veteran with a back that I gave to our country many years ago. And it had to handle well enough, understanding that I am never going to be traveling at Ninja speeds like I did in the early 90s. This bike checked every box. It took 3 days of pretty regular practice, but I am fairly decent on the back of a bike again. This bike was very accommodating as I shook the rust off. Sure, if I am going to be an older guy getting back into riding, I'd LIKE to have a Harley. But I am a retired Veteran, not a retired millionaire, so the next time I have 50 grand to spare I am putting that down on a new truck. For 3 grand on a used bike (in mint condition) with all the boxes checked...yeah...if any of what I said above reminds you of yourself, you are going to like this bike alot!

I turned the 2003 into a Bobber and the 2004 has the touring package and is still stock. It's just like you said. My VL800's are just a carbureted version of the C50 Boulevard. I had always been a Sport Bike rider and now I love riding these cruisers. You cannot beat a used one for the price. They are always bought by an older person who rides them conservatively and keeps them in their garage so you get a lot of bike for the buck.

I’ve ridden it from North Georgia into Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia on several trips without a hitch. I'm 5"7' and 140lbs guy.. The 2009 C800 model served me with zero issues up until 2020, when I had to sell it. Also, it took me through Austrian and Slovenian Alps without a problem, even when I was fully packed (~30lbs) & with my GF (5"6' / 130lbs) in the back seat. The max speed we did o highway was ~150kph, but admittedly, it was already quite an comfortable speed for me to maintain for longer periods of time. The optimal one was around 135kph (me, my GF, fully loaded) - some 500km per day was a non-tiring riding distance at that speed. Now I saddle its older sister, the 2003 model, which is a sharpened hair weaker (I believe 38kw instead of 39kw) and is carburetor operated (the K9 was FI-operated), but for all practical purposes, I see little to no difference. Maybe I'll have to drive 5kph slower, but, again very frankly, doesn't bother me at all. All in all, it doesn't matter what you ride as long as you enjoy it 🙂

I've had my 07 C50 for a good 6 years now, and being a taller guy around 250 pounds or so, this bikes size never felt "too small" for me, but I did kind of wish I had something with more power and better gearing for highway cruising. Obviously with me owning this bike for 5-6 years I definitely still enjoyed it, and with a little over 50k miles on it, it's still running pretty strong. I've never had the "vapor lock" issue with my boulevard, but for the past 2 years or so my particular Boulevard would idle pretty rough on cold starts, and it would usually shut off if I didn't keep my hand on the throttle for a little bit. Once it's warmed up it idles just fine and runs like a beast though. Either way, I'm currently looking at a Honda VTX 1800 that someone here in town is selling and after taking that thing for a test ride I'm already in love with it! I know, I had my C50 for many years and just like that I already found a new love. Don't worry though, I'll probably be keeping my boulevard around even after I get the VTX since my wife is really emotionally attached to it (our very first date was on that bike)

I bought a 2003 Volusia in March, right out of the crate, and rode it until September 2022, when I traded for a 2022 Indian Pursuit Limited. I'll agree that it definitely needs a 6th gear. With the 5 speed, the top end is around 90 mph. The only other thing that I saw as a negative was the seat. IT SUCKED. Seats were always made with a flat step up so that you had something to back your ass up to. The dished seat was always causing me to slide down. As far as reliability, I've never had a more reliable bike. I dressed mine up to be a T model before they made a T model. Handlebar risers, throttle lock, windshield, case savers, highway pegs, driver backrest, passenger backrest, luggage rack, and custom saddlebags. Suzuki did have bags, but they were not very good. I did use the Suzuki tall passenger backrest and luggage rack. Other than that, all aftermarket parts. I'm waiting to see how the Indian is going hold-up, but so far, the Volusia has been the best.

Great review! I purchased this bike a few years back when I was getting back to motorcycling again after a LONG hiatus, and put two years of riding into it before trading-up for a full tourer. The C50 just works. I would rate this as an excellent beginner bike for a few different reasons. First, manageable, predictable power. Stable chassis. Bulletproof engineering and low maintenance. Dirt cheap so dropping it won't bring tears to your eyes. Has enough power to keep most satisfied for the long run. It sucks when I hear of someone laying down good money for a 250/500 only to have them trade it in (and taking HUGE depreciation on it) in just a few months after they have outgrown it's power limitations. The C50 can handle mid-long trips at highway speeds with ease, and hauls two around pretty well (though rear pillion is pretty tiny). It has a super-comfortable riding position with roomy floorboards, and a great spread on the bars. Tons of other technical plusses (liquid-cooled, no chain to fuss with, light clutch, easy on gas, low seat height, etc..), and it also possesses something of an invisible bonus; this bike looks BIG! This is a good thing for larger individuals who don't want to look ridiculous riding around on a Rebel or some similar smaller bike. In short, one could own this bike for a very long time and be completely happy with it. You did mention some of the negatives, and they are a severe detriment in some ways. If one is looking to ride on long trips with the C50 at highway speeds, be prepared to listen to some revs. This bike REALLY should have had a 6th gear, or at least some taller gearing. The most glaring example was around the 35-45mph zone. It is a constant dance here to find the right gear, and since those speeds are so common in in-town driving, it can get quite annoying to say the least. All that said, it will happily chug along at 80mph all day long; just don't expect it to "burble" along quietly at those speeds. Still, I would rate this as an excellent beginner bike for most people, with the bargain basement price point being maybe it's most beginner-friendly feature! I literally bought 2008 model (from a dealer no less!) for $2700.00, and it had less than 5k miles on it and looked brand new. I wound up selling it back for the exact same amount a few years later.

@@Voltomess I'd been off a bike for over 20 years before getting back into riding and purchasing the c50. It feels large, which is in part do to a big tank. The bike weighs a little over 600 lbs. which isn't to heavy in my opinion. So, it does look a little intimating but it handles very well. Also, it's got a good amount of power, but nothing to overwhelm a new rider. My advice is to do as I did. Find a beginner rider safety course and take it before you even buy a bike, any bike. They'll give you a 250 to bang around on in class. I thought I was "experienced" from a good number of prior years riding. I was wrong. I was amazed to find out what I didn't know and what I'd been doing totally wrong. The course is money well spent and here in California, allows you to skip the riding part of the test at the DMV. Which is VERY hard on a big bike. One last word of advice; approach riding with confidence but remember that ego is not your friend. It can get you injured or killed. Well, ego and not learning to push through corners correctly. 😉 Good luck and stay safe.
@Voltomess4 жыл бұрын
@@denvermason2467 Thank you very much for good advice. I did my MFS course and I'm glad I did it it was fun riding on those 250's. So the only thing that intimidates me right now is my future bike weight.

Smolex I'd recommend going to a dealer and sitting on a range of bikes. That's what I did and it was a lot easier to rule out the ones that didn't feel comfortable. I went convinced I was going to buy one bike and walked out purchasing another as the ergonomics for me were better ☺. Good luck with your purchase and let us know what you bought

Had two C50T's and they handle like a dream on twisty roads. wore the peace on the bottom of the flower boards down to next to nothing, dragging them around sharp corners, Left more than a few novice sport bikers riders behind on the twisty roads. I am sure a good experienced riders on there sport bikes would out run me, but most of sport bike riders to day can not get out of the bikes what the bike is capable of. Got a lot of wows, never knew a cruiser could corner like that. It is the rider not bike, in a lot of cases.

Very nice video. I just have to mention that I have a 2009 and the seat gives you a sore bottom after continuous 45 minutes on the freeway. (I'm 6 foot tall and 213 pounds) And to solve that issue is to buy a better seat for hundreds of dollars or what I did was I bought a AIRHAWK seat cushion for $120 inflated fully and that fixed the issue. I didn't strapped the cushion on the seat, so I can put it away on my saddle bags and bike still looks good. I've had it for 3 year as a first bike already, and the need for more power is leaning me towards the suzuki c90 or m90. But it is a great bike to learn, very reliable, easy to maintain, good handling and got lots of compliments from people. I love the shaft drive instead of chain or belt, since maintenance is so easy and not often. There is a response delay because of it, but is minor. The transmission is clunky a bit, but you don't notice it that much, and you can smooth out the shifting gears slashes by manipulating the transition with the clutch and throttle. Hope that helps... cause I was there when I wanted to buy my first bike. To make it easy if you are my size. To learn the c50 is good, but if you are intermediate experience get a m90 or c90.

I have sold mine and bought a used Harley sportster 1200 that is equipped with screaming eagle heads, electronics, exhaust and who knows what. After riding several bikes in my years, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, and even BMW. This bike is the most comfortable, fast acceleration bike I think I've ever owned. Never owned one in the 50 years of riding but regret it now. The C50 is a great looking bike. Looks comfortable but, anything above 55 I got a lot of vibs. Not to mention the blurred vision. Missing a 6th gear really hurt the bike. I'm in no way trying to promote any brand but just telling you my story and thoughts. Just saying this, The Sportster I speak of is the first Harley I have ever owned. just sayin

New rider here as of July 2024, took MSF course and really took on riding. My first bike is currently a 2004 Honda Shadow Aero, nice bike and all but I'm ready for an upgrade. I'm looking a 2013 C50 Special edition, basically pretty similar to the Aero with the added benefit of FI. Only reason I'm looking at a very similar bike is because I can get it at a deep discount due to minor accident, what's holding me back is going thru the process of buying, fixing and spending money only to end up with the same bike. FI would be a nice upgrade over carb, although my shadow runs fine. From all my research so far I get the idea the C50 is a better bike all around. The C50 I'm looking at is 3 hours away from me so going to take a quick look is not an option, reason why I'm trying to gather as much info about the C50 as possible. Your input is appreciated. Thanks.

Test drive a used C50 a few ears ago. It had a way too loud exhaust system on it. Other than that, I really liked it. But, I remember a lot of discussions about the cam chain tensioners going ad right around 30,000 miles. These, on forums and such. The C50 was very comfortable and roomy and makes good power. Enough power for me. A perfect bike for the big island of Hawaii where I live. But, the 30,000 mile issue? U believe the engine has to come out to do the job. Oh, and there is a C50/Volusia forum. The bike was called the Volusia at first.

The non black models of the C50 are nice looking bikes. The 2023 model is white with lots of chrome and bright aluminum. There IS NO 2024 MODEL, so it's probably finished. The C50 does have a couple of what I consider fairly major flaws, one of them fatal for a touring bike. The valves are virtually impossible to adjust. Even dealers do it the wrong way because of just how complicated and expensive it would be to do it the right way. I have been working on bikes for decades, and I would not want to adjust the valves on this thing. But where the C50 goes totally wrong is the tube type tires. Having ridden close to a million miles on around 40 different bikes, I have found out the hard way that not only are tube type tires far more likely to have a flat than tubeless tires, but when they do, there is no beside the road fix. You have to call a tow truck. I have been stranded by tube type tires many times, once for almost a week. It cost me a fortune in motel bills, towing charges, and dealer repairs. When I finally got it fixed, I turned around, headed home, and sold the bike. I have never ridden more than 50 miles from home on a bike with tube type tires since. My favorite mid sized bike for touring is the Kawasaki Vulcan 750. I've bought 2 of them new, a '93 and an '02, put over 100,000 miles on both of them before both had catastrophic engine failures due to cam chains breaking. I found a really nice low mileage '97 model, and am currently riding that. It has shaft drive, tubeless tires, hydraulic valves that never need adjusting, it is extremely comfortable for solo touring (I have done several Iron Butt SS1000s and BB1500s on them) and despite its smaller engine, it makes almost 20 more hp than the C50. It has less torque, but when you are cruising on the highway at 75-80 mph, not even halfway to redline, and need instant acceleration, the Vulcan 750 has it. And in well over 200,000 miles, a Vulcan 750 has never left me stranded.

Alex, thanks for all the info on the C50! Do you have an opinion on the M50? It seems to be the same as the C50, but lighter and with a bit more torque,. Aside from slight differences in looks and plastics replacing metals here and there, are there any riding or mechanical downsides or gas mileage differences that you now of, in comparison to the C50?
