This is one of the many reasons that Golden Girls episodes were screened as they were aired at gay bars in the 1980s. It really is a gem of a show. It tackled a ton of real issues that many prominent people avoided at the time. Sure, they were sad but they said what needed to be said.

Definitely one of the show’s most important episodes thanks to its groundbreaking treatment of LGBTQ issues, but I kinda forgot just how damn funny it is. Just top-to-bottom hilarious. Case in point: Dorothy may have the least to do in this particular episode, but she delivers my favourite line: “Clayton is a hobo?” Pure gold. 😊

It bothers me that in these times, as ordinary and not such a taboo as it was then, that: 1. Anybody that´s in the LGBT community know WHEN and HOW they decide to come out to people. It isn´t a given. Each person must gather the courage to do so and each one has their reason for not wanting to tell. People shouldn´t assume and/or make that choice for them. 2. When in the media it is portrayed that either 1. family and friends are supposed to be accepting just cause and 2. if they don´t right away they are awful people. It takes a time for them too. The same way it takes that person to accept it and say it. It´s easier for anyone not involved to say "no big deal" that when it happens in your family or loved one.
