Notice how Kirk's love of history constantly resurfaces as a theme in Star Trek. Whenever the crew is thrown into some historical-parallel situation, Kirk is the one who recognizes the references and puts everything together.

I love this episode! It's so surreal--so Daliesque--that chiming clock, suspended in midair, chiming like a Greek chorus, warning our crew of their impending doom. I love the off-key honky tonk piano music. I love the blood-red sky and the minimalist sets. It's drenched in atmosphere---and conjures all that up with only a few flats, spare props, and simple lighting effects. Underrated art design genius! Everything is so other-worldly. It's probably the best "dream" story Star Trek ever produced.

I am soooo very happy you did this episode. My comment here is going to be long. When this episode first aired, television violence was at an all time high. Police dramas, westerns, gangster and spy stories filled the airwaves. And many who held a certain consciousness protested what was being created as entertainment. Guns and bullets being used as solutions. During that time, the internet did not exist. But this episode in particular triggered a level of fan mail never seen before. People began writing in with miracle stories. People healed from cancer, heart disease, traumas, people who were unable to speak due to a medical condition were healed and spoke for the first time because of this episode. Spectre (ghosts)...asked a powerful question. What is real? Can we truly change our lives because we have changed how we think? The miracle stories were never followed up on. Which is a shame. Media cycles at the time viewed this as simply a good science fiction story and paid little attention to the effect this had on people. Fan mail grew from a few hundred to over 500,000 in a matter of days. The fan base grew worldwide. Gene Roddenberry loved exploring this idea and stories about alternative realities. He had seen death first hand both as a military pilot and later as a police officer. But he had also seen things that couldn't be explained logically. This episode brought forth a vision no one in popular culture dared to explore at the time, hidden in the mask of great science fiction. All of this explains why Star Trek in some form is still alive today.♥

Interesting how when there was lots of violence on TV there was little real world violence.Yet when the world started bending the knee to Pee-sigh-cologists and Only So-so-cialogist demanding ( among other things they messed up) that violence be removed from the airwaves. Violence only soared.

Season 3 will be a roller coaster. It has some of the best episodes of the series, and some real stinkers. Some are hard to watch. After finishing season 3, please seriously consider watching the animated series. It's 22 episodes, 30 minutes each. For a Saturday morning cartoon, it's surprisingly deep. Most of the original cast returned to voice their characters. Many of the original writers returned, including D. C. Fontana and David Gerrold. Walter Koenig wrote an episode, too. It's considered canon; it gives more character development (particularly Spock and Uhura), and it continues existing stories such as Harry Mudd. The animated series was done in the early 1970's, so consider watching it before the first movie (which was released in 1979). As for the movies, I recommend watching the first six ("The Motion Picture" through "The Undiscovered Country") before watching "The Next Generation" series. Then watch the remaining pre-Abrams movies ("Generations" through "Nemesis"). Be sure to rewatch "Space Seed" in the background before watching "The Wrath of Khan". I'll also mention three fan series to do with as you wish. They have some great episodes, and some are silly. They're not considered canon. But for what they are, they're very well done. The first is "Star Trek: New Voyages" (aka "Star Trek: Phase II", 10 episodes). "Star Trek: Phase II" was being developed as a sequel series to the original, but it was cancelled when "Star Wars" came out and the studio decided to make movies instead. Some fans got hold of some of the stories and made episodes around them. Many of the original series cast and guest stars made appearances, including George Takei in a serious tear-jerker Sulu episode. Majel Barrett and Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry, Jr. contributed. This series ended after the Axenar lawsuit. The second is "Star Trek Continues", 11 episodes and 3 vignettes, perhaps the best of the fan series. It drew in many Trek alumni (or their children). It features other well-known TV actors, including Jamie Bamber, Anne Lockart, Marina Sirtis, Rekha Sharma, Colin Baker, Erin Gray, and many more. Grant Imahara, maker extraordinaire and "Mythbusters" presenter, played Sulu. This series was said to come to a natural end at the conclusion of the 5-year mission, which happened soon after the Axenar lawsuit. Rod Roddenberry once said at a public screening that he thought his father would consider this series to be canon. The third is published under the name "Avalon Universe" and is mostly original fiction set to Star Trek, although some episodes are prequels or sequels to original series episodes. Their premiere is a spooky 2-parter about how USS Excalibur was salvaged after the events of "The Ultimate Computer". This one has 10 episodes (released as recently as last year) and seems to be still in production.

Alexxa, since you ask, my recommended viewing order (after Star Trek: TOS: Season 3) would be: 1) The Animated Series 2) Star Trek: New Voyages (available on KZbin!) 3) Star Trek Continues (also available on KZbin!) 4) The Star Trek Movies 1-6 5) Star Trek: The Next Generation 6) Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 7) The subsequent Star Trek Movies 8) A few select fan films, like "The Romulan War," "Axanar," and "Of Gods and Men"--borderline canon! That's plenty to digest! There are also Enterprise, Voyager, etc., etc., but I want to keep things fairly simple and the rest of them are, basically, your Star Trek high school and college, (above) whereas the other Star Trek series are your graduate and post-graduate Star Trek viewing! The first seven items ought to keep you plenty busy!

The reason why this episode works at all, is the guest actors. They are creepy as hell and very scary.
@davidgradwell88302 ай бұрын
They are so silent, so intimidating...Maybe, just maybe there was a dash of influence from the then-current Hammer Films "Dracula" series (with Christopher Lee as Dracula.) At that point (1968) in the series, Dracula dominated every scene he was in with his cruel, commanding, silent presence alone. He often stood still, clad in black, silently and hypnotically working his sinister inescapable will on those around him who were unfortunate enough to fall under his thrall. He rarely had dialogue. He stood, staring and staring at you, totally in control. His eerie presence alone was enough to scare you! Possibly, the Star Trek team took a few notes from Christopher Lee's version of Count Dracula in the way they presented the weird, unsettling Earps. (Hey! Alexxa, the Hammer Films Dracula series and/or their Frankenstein series--with Peter Cushing!--might be good future "reaction" subjects for you!)

In response to your request: I strongly advise you to watch all of Star Trek according to the air date. That's the date they aired on television and the dates the movies were released in theaters. The reason is with The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager ( 3 additional series) there are overlapping stories and events that might get confusing if you just watch all of one series before moving on. Some of the shows need to be seen before the movies too or you could wind up with some spoilers you didn't want. Also Deep Space Nine becomes serialized later in the show because of a critical story arc that affects the rest of the Star Trek franchise all the way up to Picard Season 3 that aired last year. So, I advise watching Star Trek according to air dates. That means you'll be watching more than one series at a time with movies thrown in from time to time. But you'll be experiencing it the way we old folks originally did. That keeps the excitement, the mystery, and the fun intact. Now, you can go online and get an actual list of all of Star Trek that shows the air dates and they are listed TV shows and movies in viewing order. That will make it much easier. To answer your question about whether you should jump into the movies right after you finish the last update of the tv show... The answer is yes indeed, do, UNLESS you want to watch the 1 season of Star Trek: The Animated Series. If you do watch that first that's fine. You don't have to though. You can consider it "season 4" if you wish. But nothing in it is critical to the future of the Star Trek shows. So, yes go ahead to the movies. You'll watch 4 movies before you get to Star Trek The Next Generation. Then you'll be watching a combination of series and movies if you choose to watch them according to the air date. If you don't want to do it that way for whatever reason, that's perfectly fine of course, then you would watch the first 6 movies before starting Next Gen. And you won't watch any more movies until you finish season 7 of Next Gen then you'll watch the 4 Next Gen movies then the Abrams reboots whenever you want to. Those are only important to start after watching the final Next Gen movie, but otherwise, they stand alone, and don't really impact the rest of Trek, so far as we know at this time. However you want to watch them though is totally your call. I recommend by air date because it's how us old folks experienced it and it was a fun ride that way and we got to enjoy how big stories unfolded across series. Next Gen , DS9 and Voyager are set in the same era of Star Trek that is the Next Generation era and roughly around the same time ( give or take a couple years in fantasy land). The other series, Enterprise, is 100 years before Kirk but STILL there is some slight overlap with events ( consequences really) of several Next Gen era storylines. Whatever you choose to do I'm here with you. There is so much more Trek to watch and it only gets better and better and you're going to love every crew and every series ( at least up to Enterprise) because they are all great. After that is "New Trek" and in all honesty it's a very mixed bag of good, bad, tolerable, and outstanding but still worth exploring. But New Trek is quite some time away yet. So don't sweat that at all. Looking forward to seeing your continued reactions on your trek through Star Trek.

5:49 Mark! Others go on and on about the Kurt Russell & Val Kilmer movie "Tombstone" probably because of the faster, action-style movie pacing and storytelling. 29:27 Mark! 434 Views + Mine! Thumb Up #80! 👍 You're welcome, and thanks! 😊 Notes: Warfare? Well, to be fair, it is only a war when the invaded defend themselves against their invaders and/or attackers. Otherwise, they become victims of a massacre or a conquest. 😮 For example, Ukraine! They didn't allow Russia to force them to become a part of whatever Russia calls itself now. "Federation"? 🤔 They were all too happy to be free of the USSR when it collapsed. So, they fought back. 😮 I don't blame them. Warfare isn't akin to trying to stop shoplifters or bank robbers, as some seem to make it out to be. 🤔🧐🤠 Chronological Story Order versus Release Date Order? 🤔 It is illogical to try and repeat the way it was in the 1960s, 1970s, et cetera. Chronological Story Order makes more sense! Overlapping doesn't begin until after "Star Trek: The Next Generation" begins while the original series cast are making movies with some of them making guest cameos in the new series. "Star Trek: Generations" is when Kirk & Crew pass on the "torch" to Picard & Crew in making movies! "Encounter at Farpoint"? Heh. I guess people have forgotten that back in the day, it was first shown as a made-for-television movie first, and then as a repeat, while in reruns, it was a two-parter. With the first DVD, you had the option. Ditto for how "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" started. My best friend and I went to a premiere party at a restaurant that was hosted by a radio show and/or a local television studio for the debut of "Star Trek: Voyager"! I haven't been back to that place ever since, because the drive distance is too far for me, if I'm driving. As I recall, it too was longer than an hour, making such an event worthwhile! So think of that when the time comes to see those pilot episodes! Bye-bye for now! 🙏
