STAR TREK's mission is to "hold the mirror up to nature," as Shakespeare would say and I think this episode does that beautifully.

I appreciate the remastered touches to this, but the class distinction was definitely the message.

The theme of "eugenics" is addressed in multiple episodes across the franchise.

Yes! I've seen it in Picard! Picard was what made me want to watch ST from the beginning. 😊

Good message Alexxa. Communication leads to understanding and empathy. For people who are open to it, it does.

It's funny that Droxine knew about the Vulcan 7 years mating cycle but Spock didn't want to tell his captain and best friend about the Vulcan mating cycle

"This show does not like clothes on women." William Ware Theiss was the costume designer. He was quite prolific in TV and films throughout the 60's, 70's and 80's. He won an emmy for his "Star Trek" costumes and 3 academy awards. His designs were intended to frustrate censors by creating alluring female costumes that censors typically could not credibly forbid, employing what came to be called the "Theiss Titillation Theory" - The sexiness of an outfit is directly proportional to the perceived possibility that a vital piece of it might fall off.

Love this episode. It’s also reflective of the studies that were becoming more prevalent in the 1960s regarding “environmental racism“ - studies of inferior nutrition, peeling lead paint, air quality, and all types of quality of life issues causing physical, mental, and emotional impairment in lower class communities.

26:40 Mark! Oh?! I thought the city was named for the location of being high up in the Stratosphere of the planet. 🤔

1:25 Mark! Alexxa, greetings! 🖖 Okay, you are still viewing the digitally remastered version as evidenced by the new replacement design for the cloud city "Stratos"! By the way, George Lucas was inspired by this episode, too! 😎

You would probably enjoy the novel, "Ringworld" by Larry Niven as well as his "Known Space" stories.

I'd like to see how this new society progresses. Doubt it will be smooth in the beginning.

This episode is a great example of how people complaining that recent Star Trek is "woke" are wrong, because it has been "woke" since Day 1, and that's the whole point of Star Trek 🙂 Star Trek is all about a society that has moved beyond their petty differences, and it helped them evolve 🙂 btw there have been several studies done for NASA about building bases in the clouds of Venus. Apparently, at the right altitude in the Venusian atmosphere, an Earth breathable atmosphere floats! And the temperature and pressure is the same as sea level on Earth! So all you would need to go outside is a mask and oxygen...no space suit needed 🙂

15:17 Mark! Oh, how funny in an ironic way! 😮 Just think about all of the COVID-19 deniers who refused to use masks. They sound like the elitists in this episode. 🙄

That's a great point about the name Stratos, a double meaning of the social stratification and the city's perch in the stratosphere! The arguments against helping the Troglytes sound like they're taken straight from the mouths of antebellum slaveholders and later segregationists regarding providing freedom, education, and rights to black Americans. Sadly the messages about inequality and exploitation never seem to age.

more proof that trek has always been “woke” in the best way’s possible
