one of the thing that will make you a better DP its become a good Gaffer. work on some shortfilm or helping in a music video etc, Gaffering the set, and this will make you understand a lot more of this.

I’ve noticed on big budget movies all bets tend to be off when it comes to the closeup 😂 There are lots of cases where the big budget movie does exactly what we’re told not to do. I’ve even seen giant unexplained light sources at night (The Man from Snowy River is probably the worst offender I can think of, but that’s probably lower budget). I think one big factor is set design. If you’re already in a location that actually looks like what you’re filming, it gives you a lot more freedom to play around And kind of do whatever you want. a lot of us on the smaller stage are lighting to fix or create the location, not just to light it and tell the story. Also, one of my favorite movie scenes ever for lighting is Halo: Forward Unto Dawn where the warthog is speeding through the forest. Incredible use of practicals and darkness. (Could all be CG, but it’s fantastic either way). I appreciate the video!
