I've been using the Tentacle Sync boxes and lav recording devices for a few years now and will never go backwards. It allows me to use my 4 action cameras and 3 audio recording devices (7 separate things!) over the course of a 10-hour day of randomly starting and stopping various cameras all day long and have it automatically align everything in about 30 SECONDS. It took me 60 HOURS to do it without that system in place before. I don't make money on my productions very often, but dabbling for 25 years in videography for a hobby, it has been a game changer.

a good alternative to the farewell card reader is the pgytech card reader. it's not a pro card reader (i don't think) but it's like half the price. I have it and it's worked wonders for me when it comes to storing cards and just moving footage to my PC

You know, there's a whole world and industry dedicated to location sound? You might want to call up Location Sound in LA or Gotham Sound in NYC or Trew Audio for guidance. Those guys can help you solve your boom pole issues with the right stuff. Rode makes good stuff but when I want a boom pole, I prefer K-Tek.

nice list and video - love the pace of the whole thing. I think that color checker you showed was for stills photos - so if you need to use its RGBCMY color values for video you can't - cinebrite says they are different values than the colors on the color checker passport designed for video - I learned the hard way. That said, if all you're using it for is the WB patch - it's fine. They make make another one that is a combo forr stills and video that's like 200 bucks...ouch.

Thanks for the video! The Tentacle Track E got a firmware update that allows it to output timecode through its headphone port, in case that might be a more appealing option for some people. (32 bit lav recorder that can serve as a timecode box when you need that vs the Sync E that’s just a timecode box, but has a built-in scratch mic.) Edit: Also, the new Video Passport 2 has that set of color chips along with the video-centric color chips.

About syncing time, please tell me if I’m missing something: When I get my cameras, first thing I do is set the time on them. When I get my audio recorder, I do the same thing if it’s possible so that the start times in the metadata are all in sync. Then, when syncing audio and video, and I mean, I dunno if it’s only Final Cut that does it, but the audio automatically aligns its time code with the video’s time code. So if they’re all in sync, what am I missing that the tentacle will add? Is it precision? And how does it do that wirelessly when I have to account for the difference between the speeds of light and sound anyways? Am I missing something, or is this an unusual set of circumstances that make this unnecessary for me maybe?

Media is best saved on CD/DVD/Blue-Ray. I know it seems primitive. There is no possible mechanical failure. A magnetic or electrical disturbance does not affect a disc. If you store them in a cool dry place they don't degrade for 100 of years. No to mention cloud and NAS are on the network so they can be hacked.

A NAS is not like a server it is a server. Also please for the love of god so not talk about backup and NAS at the same time. A NAS is not a backup! A second NAS that is mirrored might be a backup. But no matter how many diaks are configured as being able to corrupt without loosing data. This is NOT a backup. Please still backup your files. A Hard drive can fail at random every second. A NAS can fail. It is rare but if all your data is lost you do not care how rare it is. Use a proper Backup with a 3-2-1 strategy. Working pro I'm both video and IT talking here btw.
@evocati65235 ай бұрын
Depending what RAID setup you go with then yes a NAS does have a backup built in. If you're in IT you should know this. Having two full copies on one NAS is already plenty for most people, an offsite copy would be great but yes a properly configured RAID is a backup
@DKtracks5 ай бұрын
@@evocati6523 I have a degree in IT and worked there for almost 10 years I think I know my stuff. There is a saying that goes "a NAS is not a backup". You can even google that of you do not believe me it is really common. If something happens to your NAS as awhole,: let's say a power surge. Then your "backup" would be fried as well as the original copy. So no a NAS is not a backup no matter what kind of Raid configured in. It can be failsafe to a degree but that is not what backup means. The same goes for the backup rule. I didn't invent the 321 rule. It's common practice for a reason.🤷
