They say you have to own an Alfa to be a true petrol head. Trouble is, you have to want one in the first place. Is the 4C the car to get people in to Alfas again?

***** That's one beautiful car, if you ask me. The thing with Italian cars is that they never get old. Even the 20-years-old Alfa spider looks like a fresh concept car. I bet your car would look as fresh as it used to be in 2005 even after an extra decade or two from now :)

I have a Launch Edition US version. Much different than the European version. The US version has more government required crash crush zones, side air bags and a slightly different carbon fiber layering to increase the crash protection. It weights a bit more but surprisingly the performance is the same or better with this version. Several test have shown 4.1 seconds 0-60 and 12.6 second quarter miles at 108 mph....which I can verify. The traming (darting about) was due to some having incorrect suspension alignment on some of the delivered cars. Mine tracks like on rails and no issues at all. May also have something do with driving on the other side of the road in Britain vs. US. Needs to be properly broken in before the true performance shows. The trans is magnificent....there is some turbo lag in the All Weather mode but gets better as it goes up the 4 levels of engine mapping and stability control, etc. tightening. By the way these are not made by Alfa Romeo....they are all made in the Maserati factory in Modena. This was an early lower end model. The model I have has track suspension and race exhaust. Frankly the ride isn't that bad. It is firm but well damped...my wife says it is plenty comfortable for her. With my exhaust the noise level goes up but we can still carry on a conversation....until you nail it....and that glorious ALFA symphony starts. There are plenty of other excellent cars out there....but this is a real drivers no concessions car. Every car has their "fails" but over all this is a darn impressive car. I spent a lot of time driving all the competition and settled on the C-4.....it hit all the points I was looking for.

What is he whining about? This is a hard-edged sports car that the driver adapts to, not the other way around. It is low to the ground with stiff suspension to prevent bottoming out and for proper handling. This Alfa is an exciting car IMO.

I have a 4C since June last year. I've driven it from Estonia to the Nürburgring Nordschleife and back, I drove 103 laps while I was there. And i just can't believe Alex and I have driven the same car. Mine is an LE with the Race suspension and I still find it a tad soft, I drive it flat out hitting 230 km/h plus before Schwedenkreuz still talking to my passengers. It has never tried to kill me, it doesn't suffer ADHD and it doesn't have any of the negative traits British journalists keep telling us about.

And I have to say about the comfort it is no where near a car for comfort its a trackday car just like a Lotus elise exige. Chris Harris had the same problem with the front end of the car feeling quite unstable.

Alex, you do the best car reviews on the 'net...I really appreciate your honest opinions, which is what we need when unable to test drive certain cars ourselves. The idea of no-power steering appeals to me, as nothing gives that pure honest feedback like a non-assisted rack. Flappy paddles (especially _dual clutch_ ), strangely enough, do appeal to me, although I wouldn't turn down a proper 6-speed manual with Honda-esque snickery. Keep up the great work.

A brutally honest review. Good job. Favourited and subscribed. Incidentally my daily car is an Alfa Mito with the semi-automatic gearbox (same 6-speed unit in the 4C). It's fantastic to drive fast, but there are some things about it that make me wonder what they were thinking when they made the car.

Not offering a manual transmission seems like a pretty big mistake to me. This is a competitor to the Elise and Cayman/boxster (maybe a little bit of MX-5/GT86), right? Those offer manuals for a reason. People who buy these kind of cars are usually into that. Yeah, the flappy paddles are probably good and they're obviously faster, but that's why you offer both so people have a choice. But still, I like the 4C. Especially the spider with the new headlights. It's stunning. I'd love to drive it one day, but if I was actually looking to buy a sportscar in this class, I'd look elsewhere.

First off another brilliant video done by you guys. The editing and commentary really are top notch...even better in my opinion then some of the channels bigger then you. One point I would like to bring up is that when you mention the steering you say it sometimes gets sketchy and unpredictable. If I recall correctly when they designed the 4C they actually are one of the few companies that decided to go with a manual steering option rather then a power steering format. Could it really just be the feedback from the road you were experiencing and not really a flaw in the car at all? They went with this option to give the car a more authentic feel and really emphasize the "driver" type car it is supposed to be. Many people miss that kind of raw feedback that many power steering options just don't give you now a days. I am by no means an Alfa fan boy...just giving you guys some food for thought. Great video keep them coming!

Quality video, great shots. But quite negative towards the 4C; for a car that's only a well sorted/tuned suspension (Ohlins, Intrax, etc) set-up away of being briljant. Becuase a car that looks this good, is faster, has a good and better engine and gearbox, is more spacious, more grown-up and has almost the same weight and price as a Lotus Elise should only be applauded.

A great "generational review." Perfect in context based on the age of the reviewer and motoring history probably experience within that time frame. The only way to really be comfortable with the steering characteristics of the 4C, is to have grown up in a time when non power steering vehicles were on the road. The 4c takes one back to a time when driving a sports car was about the tactile experience one enjoyed when doing so. Kind of the same reason many older motorcyclists prefer bikes that offer less technology and more visceral qualities that hit home within the soul, than just the brain. Driving the 4c is the closest thing you can get to riding a superbike with 4 wheels and a roof. Doing so demands your constant attention. There is no eating a Big Mac when you are driving along in an Alfa 4c. There is no picking up the cell to respond to a text. The only thing you can do while driving the 4c, is drive the damn 4c. Grip the wheel with both hands, develop a perfect rhythm with the road beneath, and do a seductive dance with your feet from the throttle petal to the brake and back again. As your eyes widen, your heart races, your adrenaline pumps and your mind loses control over your mouth with your soul passionately crying out... " Holy ^%$#@!! This car is %$#@! AWESOME!"

To anyone considering one and is over 6ft tall the seat trim can be removed very easily and there is a 2 inch block of polystyrene in the base. Take this out and you sit much lower. Adding some lumbar support in the backrest is also easy. The dead pedal is a bit uncomfy too but can be moved easily in an hour or so.

Russell Robinson German here, you are right and wrong. We can actually get both. The Launch Edition has the headlights as seen in the video. And the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider has the prettier ones with glass.

After driving one of these myself, this review is absolutely spot on. I want one, I lust over one but it doesn't make sense for me to buy one. I love this car but its hard to pull the trigger on it.

So when you talk about the steering, are you saying it feels twitchier than other manual steering equipped cars? The way you describe the steering (twitchy, darting all over the place, tons of feel, etc.) is exactly what I would expect from great manual steering. Have you ever driven something else with excellent manual steering, like a classic Porsche, so you can compare the steering between the two? I was just amazed that you seemed to hate the steering on the 4C, and you described it in a way that made me think I'd love it. Also, great video!

Good looking car! I like the lightness of this design. Nevertheless I wonder the reliability of this vehicle. Can be inconvenience in the US! Have to wait for parts. Since it is not a popular car company in the US market. Hard to be competing with the well establish Porsche in the US market.

I think 4C is a good start for Alfa. If we criticise too much, they will create again "sporty" Brera thingy... This time 4x4 with diesel weighting as hell. Therefore, 4C is brilliant and keep going on. Maybe Fiat should use this same chasis above upcomming 124 Spider. Abarth could help with aftermarket. That would make whole thing much cheaper (not Abarth part).

I had a brief test drive (10 min) on a closed track (parkinglot with cones). I had no complains with the steering, very direct maby to much for bad british b-roads. Fantastic breaking feel (best i ever experienced in a roadcar. A bit more power would make the experience more excting, it didn't feel that fast. Best sound ever out of a 4 cilinder turbo in my opinion. Only real problem is that i dont have 60k euros to spend..

The Alfa Works have a 500 quid fix that resolves pretty much all the steering issues. Such a shame that AR themselves didn't sort it at launch. Most if not all reviews start & finish with this criticism which is SUCH a shame since it is an epic car.

As an Alfista, I am a little bit disappointed by some reviews the 4C has got, but I think this one is honest. Knowing some owners, I can tell an update on the front suspensions is currently been deployed in a recall. Anyway, I think this car is a good first outcome for a company that unfortunately hasn't operated in the segment of sports cars for decades. Just a remark on the looks: if you don't believe Alex just go and see one in the flesh, it's gorgeous! An Elise or even a Cayman just disappears next to it!

Rumours say that an updated version with 270hp will be revealed in the spring. With a more responsive twin-scroll turbo. Faster gear changes. Other than that, just so fine tuning of suspension, steering and such (more comfortable seats I'm told?)
