Many guys here are concerned about reliability of the Alfa. I have had a MiTo 1.3 JTD, very small urban car, for 5 years without a single issue. I still have it in my box because I believe it will be a fantastic vintage sport car in 15 years from now. I’m now a happy owner of a Stelvio Veloce Y20, the best compact SUV ever made. Old times with unreliable Alfa Romeo cars are over.

Sold my BMW X3 (no complaints) to get a Stelvio 3 years ago. Only one minor issue with the interior rear tailgate switch. It has a much better handling/driving experience and it‘s easily the best looking SUV in it‘s class. Dissing Alfa for reliability in 2021 is a little silly, get over it. Probably my last ICE vehicle, and glad I switched to something a that‘s more engaging than the rest of the pack. Have no opinion in the Lexus … just not a car/brand I would ever consider, probably fine, though way too over-styled IMHO (inside and out),.

Unusual comparison but quite interesting. You nailed it on the Alfa being a drivers car and the Lexus a luxury car. My last car was a Lexus and I now own an Alfa Stelvio that I bought in January 2021. It already has 7,800 miles on it and it's been flawless--not even an oil change yet. Overtime, I found the Lexus to be boring. On the other hand, the handling of the Stelvio (with a bigger engine) is truly outstanding. It rivals much more expensive German cars. And, as of the 2020 model, Alfa has really upped its luxury game. It's still not as tight as a Lexus but I find the interior more functional than the Lexus and much more elegant.

Nice review John! Love how balanced you are with the review, highlighting each cars strength. For what it’s worth, I have owned 5 Alfa’s in a row and Lexus RX 350. The Lexus made me feel really content with life and was a very comfortable car. The Alfa’s on the other hand always made me feel glad to be alive, making the most of life and laughing out aloud. Once the software patches were released on the Quadrafoglio, Alfa have never had any further issues. (The base 2 litre ones never had any issues from the beginning). The UK magazine “What Car” runs an annual reliability survey. They have 18000 people respond with cars from 0 to 3 years of age. The Guilia came 3rd out of 14 brands in the segment and only lost out the gold medal Lexus by less than 1%! Pretty impressive and they have come a long way. Further if you Google a survey of the most satisfied drivers in the UK last year, Guilia drivers were the most satisfied out of every brand. More than Tesla, Lexus, Mercedes, Porsche etc. I can vouch. My now 3 year old Guilia Quadrofoglio has been faultless (like my previous 4 Alfa’s), has amazing ride quality and is without question the greatest 4 door ICE performance sedan on the planet.

These faults were then classified in 14 individual groups which included battery, bodywork, brakes, engine, engine electrics, exhaust, exterior lights, fuel system, gearbox/clutch, interior trim, non-engine electrics, steering, suspension and other. For each fault category, owners were then asked how much time was spent off the road as a result of the downtime. Additionally, they were asked to report the overall cost of the repair and whether the manufacturer warranty covered it. After the data was compiled, each vehicle was given an overall reliability score and ranked against the competition. The WhatCar? Survey awarded Alfa Romeo with a fifth place overall reliability score in a field of 32 manufacturers. Alfa Romeo outperformed brands like Honda and Subaru along with luxury rivals Audi, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW. Both are great looking cars. As a previous 147, 156 owner I'm biased, so I'd go for the Alfa.... 10 years ago. The total 5-year running cost for either is around the $10,000 mark. This is based on 12,500km/year, $1.60/liter and servicing. This doesn't include tyres and brakes. At this price range you can't go past the Tesla Model SR+. No maintenance, minimal electricity cost around $500 per year, more power. Add to that 4 tyres at $1200 and that's it. For a car that's rear wheel drive, more powerful, more practical and spacious, comparable ride and will be better at collection than the day you ordered it. It will become worse for the 3-series, c-class, A4 and these two when the Ioniq 5 launches.

I must confess my attraction by Alfa style and also, in compensation, that, after having the painful experience of owning two Lancia in the 70/80s, have sworn no more by Italian (no problems, instead, with Fiat's!). These days, I think that more than ever a reputation is everything that many brands have, because I notice that some those that have good can have bad issues but nobody reads bad publicity, while those with bad reputation can have no issues but the bad name persists. I don't know, but I'm being owner of Mercedes and BMW since the early 2000s and, frankly, the issues have been much more than expected. So much that I decided to buy a Mazda CX-5 instead a X-anything for my wife (we are both happy with she) and I use a second hand BMX 218d cabrio manual for which I bought a full comprehensive service pack till the 100.000 km, really very affordable. And, here why I'm here, I'm thinking of a Giulia Quadrifoglio ALSO. You know, I trust more those who need to fight for a place than those who are sitting in the mountain.

@@lisajason111 it’s complex and a reflection of the market differences more than anything else. Typically Australian market cars are fitted with more standard equipment than in most other markets (especially compared to the US market) because customers no longer buy the lesser-equipped versions. Legally they also have to include sales tax in the advertised price (in the USA this is added depending on the state, not sure about Canada). The other difference is that the average wage is higher in Australia than in Canada, so the price relative to this comes down, effectively. Canada also has also historically had to price it’s cars relative to the US market, one of the very cheapest in the world, whereas Australia is an island and can charge whatever it likes!

Cars are unreliable and fragile things in nature. I am not gonna spend that kind of money on new car based on rumors about unreliability- it is really annoying to keep mentioning this throughout the whole review.

Am I the only one that doesn’t really like how the Alfa looks on the exterior? Everyone goes on and on about how beautiful it is, but I find it kind of frumpy.

Lexus makes such boring cars to drive. The Alfa Romeo Veloce that I have is more fun to drive than anything in the segment. Also in the US we have a 5 year 50,000 mile warranty.

Lexus all the way for me.. Buy Lexus IS300 OR IS300H OR IS350 and you won't have any regrets. Worry free motoring. Looking forward to the next gen. LEXUS NX..can't wait for the review.

A little bit better the Lexus ( reliability ) ? You got to be kidding. Lexus is the most reliable brand while the Alpha is one the worst ( if not the worst ).

The UK magazine “What Car” runs an annual reliability survey. They get roughly 18000 people responding with cars 0 to 3 years old. The Alfa Guilia came 3rd out of 14 brands. A lot has changed Gil since the 70s and 80s. For what it’s worth, I have owned 5 Alfa’s in a row. All been paragons of reliability. Maybe it’s time to update your stereotype. Ps - they don’t rust anymore as well.

Another review full of stereotypes... journalist, youtubers, press in general are the ones that feed stereotypes... how a guy touching the panel doors know the durability or build? are you kidding? the ONLY way to check that is disassembly them. Do one thing for yourself, go check the durability of an Alfa 147 and a Toyota Corolla from same year, touch the doors see the actual state of the dashboards, the looks the materials used a come again with that bullshit.
