The Alfa Romeo Giulietta is the best family hatchback the firm has ever made. Buyers are offered plenty of choice, with four trim levels - each of which is well equipped - and five engines, all of them economical. It's good looking, and the interior strikes a good balance between user-friendly simplicity and appealing style.

So disappointed by this review from this channel. Looks like they're inventing problems where there aren't any. And I'm not talking for the drive modes and the feel they transmit to the driver, because this is his opinion, but for the toggle switches, the glove box, the driver seat height etc. Have you seen any car, of this segment, in which the glove box doesn't touch the passenger's knees when it's fully opened? And why would you want to jack up the seat so high that your head touches the ceiling? If you're tall, or average height, you don't need to jack up so high the seat. If you're not that tall, then the problem doesn't exist (except in Mat's head).

The infamous reliability issues with Alfa's are in the past; the Giulietta scores higher than the VW Golf in the most recent reliability tests. So, stunning looks, reliable, fabulous performance for the delivered economy... who could want for more?!

The flaws he mentioned like seat height and door bins are just daft - why would somebody raise the seat to the point their head touched the roof unless they were a character from the Simpsons? I stick my mobile and wallet in the door bin, while driving, with room to spare. Glove box is only accessed now and then and not for very long - not like I leave it open with a passenger next to me. Bluetooth connectivity for phone and music has never been an issue in my 2014 Giulietta so maybe this was only an issue on the first-gen cars. I've got the same 1.4 turbo engine but the Sportiva with sports suspension and 18 inch wheels and it's a comfortable car for road trips, fun handling on a good B road and easy to park and maneuver around a city centre - economical too! On top of all these good points it's never let me down mechanically and get's compliments from people - even have one female friend who describes it as a sexy car. The styling, as with many Alfas, is only improving with age and I have a feeling classic status lies ahead. All that being said I like this review and have revisited it several times - can't believe it's 11 years ago!!

I love Alfa Romeos; all the male members of my family have owned at least one, and most have owned more; The Bertie is one of my favourite cars ever, like ever - alongside the Miura and 911. The last Alfa I had was a 147 2.0TS in Gabbiano blue,and it was totally superb. The best handling FWD car I have ever owned in fact. It was 8 years old at the time and I paid £1200 for it. Now, I love the Giulietta's looks, and would love a test drive in one to see how it compares, BUT... for a car that depreciates so horrifically, they are ridiculously expensive. They also appear to have been made more cheaply than the 147 according to what I read in reviews. The 147 had so many well thought out touches, and was really nicely screwed together. The leather was lovely too. Now, I looked at one as my next company car, so, let's take a look at business leasing currently... (prices approximate and accurate as at Feb 2014): ALFA Giulietta 1.4 TB on a 10k miles PA lease is around £210pm on a 3+35 (pay 3 months up front followed by 35 months at £210) Now that may sound reasonable to you but, let me show you this: BMW 120d Sport model on 10k miles PA lease on a 6x23 is £169pm! Yes, thats right, a BMW 120d Sport is significantly cheaper than a Giulietta! Alfa - FWD with 120 BHP engine, combined MPG 44MPG BMW - RWD with 177 BHP engine , combined MPG 60MPG Why would anybody get the Alfa when it is more expensive, slower, less dynamic, thirstier and not as well made as a BMW?! I know the BMW is considered a bit of an ugly duckling by many, but even so! It's nearly 20% cheaper than the Alfa! Alfa CAN make great cars when they want, but their attention to detail is rotten. My 147 was a brilliant, brilliant car. It was cheap to buy, comfy, fairly economical for a 2.0 engine - I could tickle 40mpg out of it on a long run!, handling fantastically for FWD, looked amazing, was beautifully made and reliable (yes! Really it was!) and came loaded with kit like dual zone climate, BOSE amplified stereo, cruise, heated seats and so on. But to be completely outclassed AND out-priced by a BMW is a humiliation. Come on ALFA! Give me a job and I would sort it out for you!
@greengrass9572
@greengrass9572 7 жыл бұрын
robsa walker, a well written perspective by you, but there are two points I wanna pull you up on. First your 147 was Gabbiano blue, you would have loved it more if it was Rosso Red. Second never compare a stinking diesel B M W with a petrol Alfa, that's just bollocks full stop. And the guilietta has room for improvement, but B M W s are as common as lamp posts, cost a fortune to repair, and it's fair to say if you open your eyes, generally driven by cocks.

I rented one of these on a recent trip to Italy and it was a incredible to drive it through some of the worlds most beautiful roads in Tuscany and down along the mediterranean to Positano. It's a joy to drive especially once you really put your foot down. Great engine and chassis and overall handling. But you can't clearly see the speedometer when driving. It is an Alfa after all. Italian cars are not made for fashion. The right words would be that they are made with Styling and Design in mind.

my thoughts continued: As for the your shin rubbing against the center console - yes, it does touch, but not to such an extent that it would become annoying. Right hand drivers (as in England and Australia) have complained about the lack of a foot rest for your left leg. I guess that is only a problem in right hand models since the left hand models do have those. Build quality is overall excellent and the car is beatiful inside and out. The ride is very good, and overall - i was impressed.

I had no problem sitting on the back and I'm 1.80m (5.9 feet) I had plenty of head room! also I managed to fit a 0.5l bottle on the side bins, the only weird thing was that the AUX jack and USB socket were inside the glove compartment, I managed to mitigate that by getting a bluetooth adapter but still WTF?! overall love the car and I don't regret buying it, its an awesome first car to have.

I love the DNA switch! As for the steering being "heavy and artificial" i just think that the reviewer has gotten used to electronic power-steering - which, ironically, is artificial! lol. In Natural mode, electronic power-steering is activated. In Dynamic mode, the steering is firmer. But it gives you more feel because there's less power/electronic assistance - which is the point... And it's not a big difference. It's noticeable, but again, it's intentional because the dynamic mode is basically a Sport mode. Alfa should have called it Sport. Eco. All Weather. But obviously that doesn't fit their marketing gimmick of DNA. But that's essentially what it is. And i like it. When i'm in traffic, i put in it Natural mode because being in Dynamic is too sensitive. I've owned and driven Nissan 300ZX, Mitsubishi GTO, Nissan Skyline R32GTR, and trust me, i wish they had a "natural" mode for when i was/am in traffic! Haven't tried the All Weather mode yet. But looking forward to it snowing! lol!

Got a blinding deal from Alfa dealer, for what I think is by far the best looking car in its class (and in many other classes too!). It's faster, more frugal on fuel, and has lower CO2 outputs than almost everything else of similar price, including the Golf and A3.

I like the heavy steering in D and the reduced torque/sharpness of the throttle in N (= more mpg). I'll spec a TCT 'box (so I'll get no problem with the knee). Nor me or nobody I know is tall enough to have problems with space (glovebox or headroom) and btw I'm not interested in a sunroof (that steals 1 inch) and I drive very low with the seat. Never used side door bins much and I love the stereo (Bose) and satnav/bluetooth system in the Giulietta.

What would have happened if he jacked up the seat so high in another car? My guess is, and correct me if I'm wrong, he would have touched the ceiling with his head. He really had to try hard to come up with some downsides of the car, when in fact there were none.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In my view the 159 looked far better.

The 159 definitely has a mean and aggressive front (Like the Berera), but the back looks so LAME, and the interior design looks like its from the 60s, bland and uninspired, overall the giulietta is the better car.

I bought this car in january and received it in march and all I gotta say is it drives wonderful! Best FWD steering car in it's class and it looks amazing from any angle. People actually turn their heads when they see you down the street and you will NEVER get that with a Golf Astra or Focus. There are other brands that have buttons on the dashboard which do nothing only if you bought the optional stuff. This guy is a whiner that's all. You don't buy an alfa because the buttons do stuff. ;)

Great review, thanks, but must accept that alfa's is simply beutiful, and doesn't matter that insignificant bad points of view. Instead, only turn your head and get an spectacular alfa's design.

This was the best exterior hatchback until the mazda 3 2014 came out, and the interior is more practical with the right driving position, and more beautiful and refined. Never thought i would say this, but i rather expend my money on the mazda than and alfa romeo :O!!!

Mazda has the joint styling department with Alfa Romeo , or Fiat . that's why you see a great improvement in Mazda shape .

I think the mazda 3 has copied blatantly from the styling of this car. If you don't believe, check out any photo of its rear LEDs at night.

I actually own one of these and i can say whats what.His comments about the interior were quite successful except from the criticism about space provided for the heads of the front passenger.I can t understand why pointing out the dna system as a bad one.As far as i am concerned in d mode the steering is impressive and not so fake as presented.In fact because of the dual pinion innovation this steering doesnt feel electrical at all ,Finally,N mode improves consumption, A traction when needed

The Giulietta, like many recent Alphas, is a schizophrenic car: trying to be both the "true driver's" sports car (to honor the brand and please their followers) AND a semi-practical family hatchback (to achieve some good selling figures). Fails to be really good at either. The review is typical CarBuyer: brief, broad, objective, excellent!

I dont like it, but i understand why other people might and i respect that. I liked the old alfas even though they werent very reliable. These cars are built as fashion primarily, its just how italian makes cars. Germans go for quality, asians for computer power, USA for acceleration on straight line. I actually dont know what to buy :) I would like body of Mustang GT500 with Mercedes interior and Skodas practicality and price :))))

One spends most of his time inside the car, not looking at it. The interior should be the one towards which most of the attention is focused. That colour doesn't really make it stand out from the crowd, but the design is so-so. The engines are great though.

It costs quite a lot if you want to put some extra stuff. Other than that, it's the only car that's worth its money. As for the reliability...its a matter of luck and how YOU treat your car. I know quite a few Toyota owners that have problems almost twice each year and they are casual drivers. While some Alfa and Fiat owners i know never had a breakdown and they thrash their cars.

USA Coming soon 2013 Dodge Dart R/T took the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, widened, lengthened, and re-skinned it, made it into a sedan, replaced the driver-facing systems with Chrysler ones, retuned the suspension, and put in their own engines.
