But to me Mazda took some of Alfa’s details and spirit to became a kind of “japanese Alfa” And honestly they nailed it in many ways, I really like most of their cars. I personally feel the concept and production have completely different proportions and it comes down to the grown over hangs. Obviously many limitations resulted in this but the concept has a beautiful, almost RWD looking silloute from the side while the production version clearly looks transverse / fwd based (Jeep Compass Like). While overall it's still a very nice design and they did a fantastic job keeping true to their initial design study, that concept was just stunning.. So the front and the wheels have very distinctive Alfa Romeo look, but at the same time it reminds me of Jaguar E-Pace and Porsche Macan looking at it from the side and from the rear respectively. Would you prefer Tonale over E-Pace or maybe a Volvo XC40? In my opinion, these three play in the same niche premium league.
@ForzaMonkey2 жыл бұрын
IMO, the xc40 looks a bit… cheap, on the outside at least, but I think it is a good family vehicle with very conservative styling for the market, and Volvo does a great job with interiors. 7.5/10. The Jaguar e-pace tries to look nice, but it just does not seem very Jaguar to me. I can’t put my finger on it though. Plus my local JLR dealer called my mom crazy because the eco-mode did not work in our old F-type. 6/10, but biased rating. Alfa Romeo needs to change the name of the Tonale. I keep thinking “toenail”. I love Alfa design though, and this car is no exception.

Thanks for this design breakdown, much appreciated. As an Alfisti I was initially a little disappointed with the reveal. The front and rear are true to the concept and very beautiful but the side profile loses too many of the really breath-taking features of the concept. I own a Giulietta and the integrated rear door handles (as displayed on the concept Tonale) set the whole tone of the side view and I can't understand why Alfa ditched them. Practicality I guess but it changes the whole look of the side view. Add to that the extra plastic trim along the door sills (which is also cut slightly different) and you go from a glorious side profile to a much more standard SUV side view. Alfa don't need to convince me, I'll buy one anyway but the concept had the potential to shift people from existing SUVs to give Alfa a try, it was just so beautiful. This production version is good but it is not the exceptional design of the concept and therefore, given how late Alfa is to this market - may not shift opinion away from the excellent German, Japanese, Korean and Swedish alternatives. I hope I'm wrong and they sell like hot cakes and I'll be happy to not be the only Alfa driver for miles.
@stefanmuller91852 жыл бұрын
I’m also a little underwhelmed actually- they should have radically kept the original proportions with the minimal overhangs - the proportions now are rather lumpy or tubby- and the radical simplicity with vast uninterrupted taut surfaces without door handles and other clutter and with absolutely superb materials like volvo or polestar- I’m afraid that it is just not special and good enough. For me it lacks class at the end. I was really looking forward to this model, I’m seeing the many positive features bembli is talking about but at the end it does not convince me, sadly.

I live in Texas there are only 11 dealers in the whole state for them to achieve 60,000 model sales a year that is going to be a lofty endeavor to accomplish . I live in the Northern part of Texas it is a 2 hour drive to the closest dealer in Fort Worth for me. That is going to be a big hurdle they will face in making a comeback in the US. Besides that I love the Tonale.

Loved the video. You really illustrated the key lines like the "GT" line very well and I got to see more of the car from a Designers perspective rather than from a marketing rep or gear-head. The only things I will mention are 1. US still isnt allowed to use cameras instead of mirrors. Not sure about UK but Japan and other Asian countries got approval for it. UK and Europe are allowed to use Laser headlights though and US just got approved for the laser matrix that Mercedes and BMW have developed which is awesome. 2. Tonale Is a compact SUV/Crossover, same as Compass .Cherokee even is considered compact sometimes but it is generally referenced as the smaller of the midsized SUVs. Grand cherokee is a true midsize and the Durango and Grand Cherokee L are full-size (though on the smaller side). Then you get the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer which are true full-size like the Tahoe and Escalade. But hey, lines have been blurred with all of these new segments. 3. I rather like the current RAV4 design and, although kind of messy with some of its lines like the CH-R, it does a good job of not looking like everything else on the market. Anyways, great job as always
