I have seen it stated as Am for America as it was based on the US 1750 Spica car, as well as Alleggerita Maggiorata for enlarged based on the larger 1750 and 2000 engines. Ref: Alleggerita by Tony Adriaensens 1994 edition. In his book Alfa Romeo GTA author Maurizio Tabucchi refers to the GTAm as “America”
