I live in an area with super heavy clay soil. During the the summer when the ground is dry and has large cracks in the surface I go around and fill the cracks with the pellets. Adds organic mater and said nutrients to the yard. I've got a long way to go, but over the 2 years I've been doing it, my yard has increased vigor, water retention, and the cracks in the summer are smaller and far less in number. Definitely worth the investment.

AGREED!!! I, however, use the alfalfa cubes. They don't look as "pretty" in the garden, as they are chunky (about 3/4" to 1" square). BUT, they are higher in nutrients because they have not been "super processed" and squeezed down into pellet shape. I also find that they break down faster because they are not bullet-hard. GREAT STUFF either way!!!

The mold on alfalfa my not be good for animals but is what plants love. I put four or five cups of pellets in five gallon buckets fill with water and stir the slurry every day for about a week and use the tea in my yard and garden every other week. I put the leftover pellets in the compost pile or as side dressing. A fifty pound bag lasts about two and a half years. I make compost tea in the same five gallon buckets, every other week. Great topics, I'm glad I found your channel.

Thanks for this great tip! I found out about them on another channel a few months ago. I sprinkled some in my garden beds about a week or so ago. I am amending my beds this week before we get more snow, so the moisture will help break them down. I didn't put enough, but this slurry/tea is a great way to supplement.

I started using alfalfa pellets as my "green material" in building raised bed soil. I mixed it with straw bale as part of the lasagna method then top off with compost as soil. It works GREAT and save money buying soil to fill up a raised bed!!

My daughter used to feed her goat those alfalfa pellets and she showed her goat at the FFA show. She won three awards. Grand Champion of all, champion in her goat's weight group, and all around showmanship. Alfalfa pellets works wonderful for all FFA animals and I never tried that for my garden. Good tip about using it for garden. Good idea, I didn't know that. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

It’s funny,back home in Nova Scotia we used to grow alfalfa on fields in “off” years,and after a couple of years as cattle feed we’d plow it under and replant barley. I’ve been using alfalfa in my compost for years. I had no idea that people weren’t doing the same 🤷🏻‍♂️ it’s like the cheapest stuff you can find for amending your garden. Hopefully a ton of folks will see your vid and give it a try!!

Thanks for the info! I have Alfalfa pellets, and have mixed them into the soil when planting, plus have put them in my compost bins. Question: For onions, I saw that you were adding the pellets during the growing season. How much do you apply for 100 SF of raised bed, and how often do you apply during the growing season? At planting? Once in mid season, or say every 3 weeks? I use Fish Fertilizer for the onions now. Can I also use the pellets, or should I use only one? Would you recommend the Alfalfa pellets over the fish fertilizer? Thanks, again!

Hey there, 2022 fall garden time. I have bought so MUCH stuff, that I have no idea now why I bought it, and what I was supposed to use it for. Rock minerals, inoculants, organic fertilizer. FISH meal, bone meal...AHHHH, help me stop with this madness. I have a basic gardeners blend, ready to go into my containers. It has a little mushroom compost, and I have just straight compost to add to it. Oh and lets not forget the bucket of home made bio-char, out in the garage . And, low and behold a bag of alfalfa pellets. I do want to add the bio-char. But, can I get away with just the pellets and ditch all of this other stuff? I'm about pooped with all of this garden "got to haves"! I am tired of being sold the snake oil! Thanks!!

Chip into a pile and let it break down Mix in with your dirt worms 🪱 love it . If you can run it threw more than once do it . The pellets are a great idea also 👍👍

Please do a video about ‘best times to water your plants’. Morning? Evening? Not the leaves? Why? Only the soil?. I chose your videos over gobs of others. I like how you deliver the message, compared to other videos.
@Fred.pSonic
@Fred.pSonic Жыл бұрын
I know your question is a year old but best watering time is morning. Splashing water on leaves and allowing that water to sit on plants during the evening may encourage mold and other plant pathogens. A lot of bugs come out at night and will feed on that water too, further increasing infestation. Plants synthesize water best during its' daytime growth not at night when it's at rest. Try to irrigate from within the soil incorporating sub irrigated piping or ollas.

Fantastic! You could crush a few pellets and spread on the surface for sure. Depends on what you're going to do with the Garlic. If you're going to grow it indoors for an early harvest, that will work. If you're going to send it outside into dormancy, don't feed now, wait until spring. Cheers! :-)

This yr, with all the economic problems we're seeing, I got serious about putting in a big garden. So, after digging into all this added knowledge, the mental pain this has caused me could honestly be measured! Like, which plant/vegetable likes what fertilizer, is it full sun, part shade, full shade, dappled light? I could go on, and on, and on, and on........ until I do nothing because of the confusion. Fish, canned tuna, fish emulation...do I bury it, make tea? Who can help me HELP ME! Finding the right answers in the ZONE you're living in? BROTHER!!!!! The questions are endless and now I'm tired. Anyway...thank YOU for YOUR channel! It's simple, informative, straight forward, PLUS...your voice doesn't rake against my last remaining nerve! I've learned a lot...

I used to eat alfalfa tablets. I buy the horse chunks (forgot what they're called) and soak them, as they break down easier than the little pellets. Then I just mix it in my soil. : ) The big bags are really cheap, too.

Hey great questions! My dog doesn't go near it. I think with simple top dressing, you could run into rodent problems if you are already susceptible.....but in the compost or buried in the soil shouldn't be an issue. :-)

Should we limit use to organic as most commercial alfalfa crops are "Roundup Ready." I have heard it said that this, or perhaps pesticides like Roundup or others used on alfalfa crops and may inhibit plant growth. This may apply to straw, commonly used as mulch, as well.
