I'm in grad school for educational psychology and just discovered Alfie. I have been binge watching his videos! I'm so impressed and inspired by him and my faith that we can fix our education problem has been restored. He validates why I chose this career and articulates so well all the things I have felt about society and education. He is the Chomsky of education. I have him right up on that pedestal next to Noam.

34:25 I wish my parents would watch this video. I am in high school and a recovering workaholic. Through therapy and reading about education, I have finally begun to quit letting my grades define me. I would cry over grades, panic over tests, stay up till really late studying, and get anxious when I didn't have any homework to do. I believe Mr. Kohn is correct when he says that we place too much emphasis on grades and achievement. In a sense, this external desire to succeed has destroyed me. I worried over my parents' reactions to my grades and strove to please everyone by being a "good student". This video has helped me to better understand how my parents' and school's extreme emphasis on achievement, particularly grades has contributed to my poor mental health. Thank you for reading my thoughts.

@@racheldebner1955 First of all, thank you for sharing your experiences, it is very wonderful to hear that you are doing better. Being that I would say I have had similar experiences, but _mainly_ because I believe there is another interesting/important angle to the issue of education reform, which Alfie Kohn doesn't really touch on, would it be possible to speak to you about this? It's a topic I would say I'm equally passionate about and so, for this reason, I feel that it might be an interesting conversation. If you'd rather not, I understand. Thanks! c:

Watching this should be mandatory homework for all of us parents who have children in the PAUSD. Our kids have been getting a great education here for a long time, but some of us are never happy and keep pushing for ever more rigorous curriculum that robs children of their right to be just that.

That would be using extrinsic motivation and as Mr. Kohn explained, it would make the parents less interested in engaging with the content.

Why is this guy not on TED talk?

> Why is this guy not on TED talk? If you think TED is about forward-thinking, about actually helping people, then it doesn't make sense that Alfie Kohn wouldn't be on TED. But if you think differently about the intent of those running TED, then, maybe it does make sense.
