In 1995, after a few years away from recording for a stint as an actor, Alfie returned and put together an album of jazz fusion vocals called Innocence Ballet which did very well on both the US and Canadian Jazz charts. Molded in a kd lang/Dianne Schurr vein, he wrote songs that were perfect for his vocal range, and with a great jazzy beat behind them, they all clicked, every one of them.
My favorite song on the album and the one that got the most airplay in the USA was Orlanda (NOT "OrlandO" as Amazon and iTunes insist, as you will see if you try to order the download, is a song about a guy finally breaking it off with a woman who sees him as a meal ticket. Even though he loves her, he can't afford her anymore.
Punctuated with some great harmonica riffs and Alfie's fantastic vocal, Orlanda became one of my favorite songs of that year, and remains a favorite today. If you've never heard of Zappacosta before now, this album is your chance to find out what a talented and brilliant singer you're missing out on..
