This is one of my favorite songs, but I like it better when Michael sings it solo. When he sings alone it's almost a lullaby, a caress. When they sing it as a duet it becomes louder and more strident and takes on a less personal feel, IMHO.

They are never strident. Maybe powerful, but not strident.

I agree with you a song better suited to the lyric baritone of Michael |Ball with his roots in musical theatre. Alfie Boe has an excellent tenor voice but his power notes have a harsh, strident quality, not so with all opera singers. Corelli, Bjorling, a young Carreras, Pavarotti, Di Stefano. Lanza, Kaufmann to mention a few. Please do not think I am comparing Alfie Boe to these great tenors, they are way out of his league

@@pamelaboyd1384 MIchael Ball has a lyric baritone voice, not classically trained, with his roots in musical theatre so Sondheim far better suited to his vocal style. Alfie Boe is a classically trained Lyric Tenor, but his power notes do have a strident quality, unlike some of the great lyric tenors, Pavarotti, Gigli, Kraus, Calleja, Bjorling to mention a few. I think Alfie Boe would feel honoured to be mentioned alongside these tenors, but he is not in their league, but nevertheless a good tenor voice.

@@peterholwill1170 Sorry to say I have only a surface acquaintance with opera, so I can't really compare Alfie Boe with some of the singers you mentioned. I do appreciate his talent, though, and usually enjoy his performances - both with Michael Ball and solo - but not for this song. This song should be Michael's solo.

I agree with you solo version by Michael Ball better and his lyric baritone voice, a lovely warm tone and his roots in musical theatre, more suited to this particular song.I enjoy Alfie Boe he has a good tenor voice and is good as a crossover singer.I love opera so unfair to compare him to a some of the greatest tenors of the last 100 years.Happy listening, thank you youtube
