In December, 1959 (I was 23 years old), my wife and I had just arrived home from church and turned on "The Dinah Shore Chevy Show". A few minutes later Alfred Apaka was on the show. It was the first time we'd ever heard him, much less seen him. We were enthralled by his voice and the very next day, after work, I stopped at a local record store in downtown Brooklyn and inquired if they had any albums by him and this 2-record LP set was the only albums by him they had in the store. I bought it and asked them the order some more for us. We were so saddened to learn about his death the following month. After that we tried to buy every album by him. I think we have every album by him in our LP collection of 4,761 LPs! Gone but nut forgotten. My wife and I have visited Maui, Hawaii 3 times. Needless to say we live Hawaiian music, it is so peaceful and relaxing.

My Dad was in The Air Force. We arrived in Honolulu on Aug 23, 1959. I was 9 yrs old. I immediately fell in love with Alfred Apaka. In Jan 1960 he died of a h art attack. The entire Island of Oahu went into mourning. I went to his funeral procession. The Bishop Museum allowed all of the Royal Artifacts to be used. The feathered capes and feathered head gear, the feathered Kalihis (tall bamboo poles with feathers on a cylindrical top piece). Also the Bier that was used for the funeral of Queen Liliuokalani, the last Royal ruler of Hawaii. She was imprisoned by the white government officials where she wrote the song Aloha Oe. Alfred Apaka was given a Royal funeral procession down Waikiki Blvd, the only one since Quen Liliuokalani's. He was know as Hawaii's Own True Son.and was a descendent of King Kamesha. The procession and the funeral was broadcast on TV. Flags were flown at half mast, l and schools and business were closed. There was not one dry eye in the crowd. I learned to hula and learned several songs in the Hawaiian language. I lived there for 4;yrs; left in 1964 when I was 13 and every single day I played one of Alfred Apaka's albums. Hawaii was a magical place back then - not as touristy and very few high rise buildings polluting the air space. Alfred Apaka's music was part of the magic.

A generational talent. Too bad his generation was taught to believe in the United States.
