I remember playing this piece with my band teacher a few years ago. He was literally everyone's favourite teacher and he shared happy and joyful moments with us throughout the year. Sadly, he moved away to a different school, and Into the Storm was the very last piece he conducted for us on the very last concert with him at our school. We emotionally spoke our goodbye speech to him and thanked him for the memories he made for us before we tearfully performed this piece. Everyone sincerely misses him after that night and every time I come here to revisit this piece, I think of him.
@issaach3 жыл бұрын
That is LITERALLY my story except not the pre-performance speech. Also, that performance (graduation) was the first one I got to perform in orchestra for (instead of his beginning band). I was likely drafted because I was the ONLY brass instrument in the school, but I did work hard on my horn to get in. Trumpet BTW.

I have to play this in band and it has haunted my nightmares and yet its not even our concert, plus the one time I am glad we have 25 trumpets they hardly get to play meanwhile us (woodwinds) have to play the entire time! we do not have enough air for this. but it is so beutiful and I love a chalenge

I played the glockenspiel part to this, and my teacher claimed it was the most important part in the band. Those several measures of rest say otherwise, but I guess that shows that it must serve more crucial parts to the piece

RIP Robert Smith truly one of the great composers of band tunes and this piece is outstanding also he is up there with Johnnie Vinson, Paul Murtha, Benjamin Tucker and Micheal Brown they make up the top 5 band tune composers

played this freshman year and now as a junior, we are playing it again... I don't think that my band director has realized that we have played it already

Flutes: ok y’all let’s go really fast on 5 notes and make our fingers tired. Piccolo and Bass Clarinet: Ok so imma make everyone go deaf and you make yourself sound like your belching. PERFECT DUET

My University played this with Joplin High School after the tornado. I cry every time just because of the sentimental feeling.
