Thank you for posting this with subtitles; this was an opera that I always was curious to see. It's kind of a strange story, and I would imagine hard to stage well; but some lovely music and an interesting locale.

La wally est trés connu par un simple intermède cinématographique (Diva) alors que cet opera de Catalini dans son entier est une pure merveille. La musique souligne a tout instant l'action, les voix sont belles et celle de la wally est riche. L'émotion est soutenue tout au long de l'opéra. Beaucoup de mélodies touchantes et danses rythmées.L'on pleure avec Wally. Que demander de plus? Cela compense largement le déséquilibre orchestral de Catalini (faible rôle des instruments vents) par rapport aux compositeurs qui ont suivi. Cet opera mériterait d'être joué plus souvent.

Such an interesting opera with beautiful music. It's hard to classify it as verismo....more like a mash-up of late Verdi and verismo. Wish it were produced in the U.S.....the Met should take it on if they can find a star soprano and tenor who are interested. I think one reason it isn't done often outside Italy is that the heroine isn't likable....she's an outsider, complex, proud, cool, and she wants to kill her true love!

Jim Glass yes, it's quite difficult to source. The only reproduction I could get was an Austrian provincial production. (Catalani: La Wally [Susanna Von Der Burg, Paulo Ferreira, Bernd Valentin] [DVD] [2014] It has a somewhat amateurish character but is not necessarily the worse for that. In fact for that reason it has an authenticity that would be difficult to achieve in Italy, regardless of the staging and choice of singers. There is a fundamental dilemna with any attempt at production - keep to the spirit of the Alpine village setting or go with its Italian operatic roots. And of course a Soprano or a Mezzo ..... And the principal character is a complex, ambiguous mix of positive and negative qualities. Not that it would bother any fan of Lisbeth Salander ;)
