Ahhh!!! Yes, that night was awesome. The buzz at the Metropolitan was of high blood alcohol levels and love for both giants onstage overdoing everything Grand Opera craves and delivers. Joan's costume had more fabric than the statue of liberty 🗽. Just how the sold-out Metropolitan Opera subscriptions fans demand. I saw better Lucia's from her with Luciano. My favorite was her "Fille du regiment," She was a skilled comedian. Those were the days. La Belle Epoque. Gracias Lohengrin 😅

omg I have sensed she was a natural Comedienne... You had managed to have seen her in her ultimate vocal prime the 60s? when was her sound BIGGER earlier or later?
@MrQbenDanny Жыл бұрын
@Lohengrin O Her Norma debut was 71, and I still remember the experience of that incredible singing. So, 70"s early 80s. almost a dozen glorious years. FILLE DE REGIMEN with Luciano, in particular, was slapstick fun heaven. When she laughed, it was total Joan having a ball. The audience loved it. She was such a ham!!!! Like Maria, there will never be another Joan. That other one who copied her sound with the crooked eyes 👀 doesn't count. I refuse to listen to her.

@@MrQbenDanny poor June u mean? Saw her as Lucia in Athens, probably the greatest I have seen live (along with Edita and Renee)

June had a great career. I never saw her live, but I appreciated her and her devotion to her art.

Y Kraus parece que no existió para usted. Que por cierto cantaba infinitamente mejor esta ópera y la Fille.

I remember reading that they asked her who as wanted as Edgardo. Apparently she “asked for Kraus and got him”.

The elephantine lightness of Sutherland's stature and acting in this scene is worth a look.

@@LohengrinO I’m afraid that Mme Sutherland took it with her upon her return to Australia, where it now functions as the cornerstone of the Sydney Opera House. 😜

Fantastic classic setting. Period costumes are excellent as is the acting. That bass is also impressive 01:12.

It will be no surprise to you to read me saying that I love Joanie. I will add, therefore, that I also love this scenery. It is wonderful! Back in 1980, the Sydney company staged Lucia for Joanie's 21 anniversary in the role. The production came to Melbourne a few times, most recently staged for Miss Pratt by a local company. It was still gorgeous twenty plus years later. Thank you for the video!

People can moan about Joan (haha), but I believe when asked, even the most ardent moaners would have grabbed a ticket to these performances with both grubby hands. The NYT was very nasty about the conducting. I cannot hear why.

I just can't warm up to her. As huge and beautiful as her voice was, she was a coloratura canary at heart.

with all that I LOVE HER...
@coloraturaElise Жыл бұрын
A canary is little twittering bird; if you want to compare her to a bird, at least pick one that suits her.....like eagle or condor! (From a coloratura who is more of a canary than our dear Joanie......)
@stefanocautavera Жыл бұрын
@@coloraturaElise I said she was a canary at heart, not that she had the voice of one. Her sound was massive, but she was obviously more interested in producing runs and high notes than actually being expressive.
@coloraturaElise Жыл бұрын
@@stefanocautavera So you don't find her expressive in this excerpt from Lucia?
@stefanocautavera Жыл бұрын
@@coloraturaElise Not really. I hear a very gifted voice, beautifully produced (at least from the _passaggio_ upwards) and with thrilling moments, but I never find her truly captivating.
