Only a German or an Austrian can sing German or Austrian music. This is purely natural. In spite of extra training, she was blessed with a naturally pure yet high voice and intonation. Most singers need to undergo years of intensive training to do what she does, and still do not sound as good. If you can't do it without killing yourself, your voice and other people's nerves, then leave it alone, and don't waste your time and money. If you are blessed to be a Wagnerian/lyric, etc, soprano, or a mezzo-soprano or a contralto, then be one. Don't try to be something you are not. I learned this lesson too late.

I think that she challenges her mates to sing and act as best they can. And she must have seemed so alien, like Gaston Leroux’s “phantom of the opera” perhaps, an either heavenly or infernal creature…!

I am pleasantly surprised by this post. I love him! This is one of my favorite videos of him. I also love the 1967 live audio of him at the Met with those slackers, Robert Merrill, Grace Bumbry, and Dame Leontyne of Price! "“I know I don’t look like Rudolph Valentino,” he told The Times in 1981. “I know what a proper physique should be for the parts I sing, but I have tried to learn to act through the voice. The proper, pure expression of the line is the most important thing.” - - - Carlo Bergonzi

No one caresses _la linea di canto_ the way Pippo does. I too have a soft spot for this type of mellow vocality (his Sogno in _Manon_ and, generally, the lyrical repertoire in his interpretation remain unsurpassed). Many thanks for the upload.

The definitive Adele. I've never heard this aria sung and interpreted better! Just deliciously effortless and witty. Gruberova has few rivals in the German language coloratura repertory. It was especially congenial to her voice, technique and vocal quirks (like a slight tendency to scoop and attack notes from down towards the center of the note), even more so than the Italian and French roles. And she had this buoyancy that a role like Adele requires, not to mention a very good sense of timing and expression in comedy.

Naturally, nobody is at all interested in whether a tenor really knows the language one way or the other. What is important is the voice. For our tenors, I mean the ones we love, only two languages are of interest: Italian and French. What you write in the first sentences is what we feel and what we hear. And what you write at the end, Julia and we love him, the main thing is that Franco gives us goose bumps that the hairs on the back of our neck stood up. Operatic greetings from Vienna
