Well, those shrimp should sell great now 🎯 The Flag fish didn't even run in this race, it's like they never heard the gun. They sat it out waiting for something better, like cats staring at a dish, "You want me to eat what?" I think everyone would like a sequel to this one 👍

Interesting. So teh Amano shrimp are a very close second and I'm guessing much more affordable? Just a thought. Thanks for the share. I just saw @SimplyBetta's video and came here. Subscribed too. Cheers! ~Ron

Scuds are also great at eating algae in my experience. On top of that, they're a great live food for cichlids, larger killifish and bettas.

Hey Dan! I bought the green leaf shrimp this summer on the hunch that they were the reason for the periodic claims of amano shrimp breeding in community tanks. They look similar to amanos when young and I suspected that they had been misidentified and sold as amanos. I just saw my first baby green leaf in the tank so they are definitely breeding in fresh water. Another cool characteristic of mine is that they can change color to better blend in with the background. They are dark brown when sitting on driftwood and turn olive/beige when on the lighter substrate.

I attended my first meeting of the C.O.A.S.T. Fish Club in Fountain Valley, CA where Dan was the featured speaker. He is as good in person as on KZbin. What a dedicated fish monger with an unbelievable breath of knowledge and care for the hobby. I can't wait to order my first batch of fish from him. Joseph Noel

I have my algae maintenance crew of American flag fish, amano shrimp, nerite snail, and otocinclus. My tanks don't really get black beard algae. Only hair green algae, diatom, and green spot algae. Nerite snails are good for ridding those green spot algae off the glass. Both American flag fish and amanos will take care of the hair green algae. My otos will work on the diatom. And then I have my dwarf chain loaches for snail pest control.

Amano shrimp for me is still the best all rounder algae eater. They're not picky and would even consume different kinds of algae but boy those green leaf shrimp algae eaters have a voracious appetite!

Oooh, do a bracket style tournament with different critters and different kinds of algae! No, joke, I know that's way too much work and space to do when you're running that shop. But I'd absolutely watch if someone did a series like that! 😊 What latin name am I looking for re the green leaf shrimp? I'm in Northern Europe, so the English popular name may not be useful for me when searching for them. Thanks, Dan & Co. You're doing great work.

On the truth the shrimp love hair algae and for the flag fish there more of a black beard algea eater so it depends on what type of algae there is in the tank imo. Thanks for sharing 💗👍✌️💯

Just saw the 3hour walk through the fish hall from Steenfott Aquatics and I already said it under his video but I felt the need to also write this here: Those licorice gourami you have arent Parosphromenus deissneri. They are always sold as that cause sellers just .. either dont care of think this name sells the best. As long as they dont color up a bit, the males in breeding dress, those could be anything BUT deissneri My guess would be "Parosphromenus harveyi" if those are indeed deissneri, they have been renamed to Parosphromenus bintan since the real deissneri has never even been exported. Every single of these Parosphromenus that has been caught since 1946 and even before, has been named deissneri but now we know, that there are way more species that look alike, when not colored up. So you might want to look into that. :)

Pretty cool test. I only get a bit of hair algae here and there - I cut off the plant parts with algae as if propagating, and float it in my scud live culture tank. They eat all the algae and leave me a clean plant to put back in my tank. Will have to look into the green leaf shrimp - totally new to me. Thanks!

@@DansFish I have a 40 with hair algae. I bought 13, pretty much all the store had: Amano, yellow, blue, orange, black and Ghost. I hope they work as well too because the 6 SAE I bought don’t do anything at all except entertaining. The shrimp started nibbling on the algae as soon as they entered the aquarium, the SAE were looking for flakes and eating them instead.

I came back to this video as its the only spot on the web that has any info on green leaf algae eating shrimp vs Amano shrimp. Does anyone out there know if this species requires salt or brackish water to breed?
@DansFish

The Green Leaf Shrimp are most likely Caridina typus, the Australian Amano Shrimp. They have a larval stage that requires salt water.

I wonder what the scientific name of the green leaf shrimps are. I’m in Japan so can’t get Florida flag fish and my amanos really don’t touch the algae growing in my tank which is green hair algae and bba as well as staghorn. I’ve tried lowering the ph, kh, and gh so that the algae gets soft enough for them to eat but no dice. Tank is a 17gal/65l so don’t really want to use Siamese algae eaters or plecos as they’d prolly get too big for me.
