You're 20 times better than my current pre-calculus teacher and we're learning the same exact thing. "They're generally called H, K but I'm just going to use numbers." EXACTLY why complicate things when you don't need to?! Thanks so much!

You've really done a great job of explaining conic section concepts - kudos. Note, your original drawing of the conic shape that conic sections are created from was correct. The base conic shape is basically the lines y=x and y=-x rotated 180 degrees, not two parabolic shapes as you redrew. In other words, if you had a plane intersecting the line of symmetry through the two cones (basically standing vertical through the center) you would have two perpendicular lines.

I was getting a C in math before because the page explaining how to get to my answer was full of numbers, half of which were not important, and very difficult to understand. I go to an online school I couldnt just go in to a teacher when I needed the help. Thanks to you, I have gotten 100% on all of my conic equation lessons so far, including the test!

The concept of parabola you are teaching out there is totally different from what we are taught in India. Here the general equation of parabola is y^2=4ax and general parabola is drawn sideways with vertex along (x,0).

The distance from vertex to focus is the number we multiply to 4 to find the value of (a or 4a) from first example it should be 8 instead of 1/8, and from second example -2 instead of -1/2.

You can think of the directrix as a straight line opposite of the focus. For example,if your focus was (1,p) the y-value(a constant straight line at a y-vale with no slope)would be negative p.

So, I assume the directrix formula is: y-d, where y is the second value (y) of the two in the vertex and focal lenght d=1/4a. I the last sample, y=4 - (-1/2) =>9/2= 4.5 Easy and quick, directrix = y-d

Great enthusiasm, really Inspiring (no sarcasm) but a conic is not curved. We get a conic by taking two intersecting lines and rotating one line around the other at the intersection. Creating 2 cones.

THEY ARE NOT CURVED!!! THEY ARE STRAIGHT!!! I am sorry, but this is simply wrong. They are cones, they are not curved, and cutting them with a vertical plane through the middle would create two triangles. Students are right. The teacher is wrong. And, from this comes the EXACT definition of parabola. Parabola happens when the cutting plane is parallel to the edge of the cone.
