Word problems? Ugh. Enter the world of YAY MATH which we break down these kinds of variation problems to that relieving phrase, "oh, it's not that bad..." So we're talking about direct variation, inverse variation, and joint variation. Oh, and for fun, notice I can erase the board by blowing on it... YAY MATH!
Learning should always be fun and connective. Please visit www.yaymath.org for:
• all videos
• free quizzes
• free worksheets
• debut book on how to connect with and inspire students
• all-in-one math courses that teachers and parents can use, backed by Yay Math energy

well, the way i look at it is something related to finding the LCD in an equation. say you had y= 6 (1/3). to factor out a fraction in a linear equation, you would find how many times 3 goes into 6. 3 goes into 6 2 times, so the 3 and 6 cancel, and youre left with a 2. so, y = 6 (1/3), y= 2.

I mean, I ain't a smartass here but the reason why some or most of our math teachers won't let us use calculators is because they're trying to train our "second calculator" (our brains basically) and I know most of us or some of us are quite (no offence) slow at doing some simple maths and stuff but hey you know what they say, " slowly, but surely "
