I'm taking the GREs in a few weeks, and it's been almost 30 years since I've taken a math class. Your explanation is very clear. Thank you!

@VickyJ31520 to get 9x, he added 3x and 6x together. since -30 isnt a like term he has to move it to the other side. to get rid of -30 on the left side, you add 30 to it and get zero. on the other side however you get 1080. To move a number to the other side always remember to do the inverse operation. since -30 is subtraction of 30, add 30.

"10 less than 2 times", means to multiply the speed of Jet 1 by two, THEN subtract 10...so the correct formula is 2x-10.

@AceEliteProduction If we let x = the usual speed, and y = the usual time it takes to drive that distance, I can set up an equation (x--8)(9+2) = 140. Since there are two unknown variables, the only way I have found to solve this problem is to substitute values for the variables. I tried to find factors of 140, which are eight units from each other. The problem solution: 28 km/hr is the usual speed, and 5 hrs is the usual time. The slower speed is 20 km/hr & to drive 140 km takes 7 hrs.

THis Guy is great . Thanks for explaining everything so we know why we do what we do and what to look for . perfect ;D

@AceEliteProduction I figured out a way to set up the equation.. Have x equal the usual speed of the car, & 140/x is the usual time it would take to go 140 mi. The initial equation is (x -- 8)(140/x + 2) = 140 Solving this problem involves factoring a quadratic equation. If you work the above equation, you eventually get the following: (x + 20)(x -- 28) = 0 To solve then, the only value that works (is a positive number) is 28. Thus, the usual speed of the car is 28.

@idancefun23 I thought that at first as well but then I "THINK" he solved as the problem read's that you would soon have to subtract the speed which is less then ten less than two time's the speed of the second jet after you figure out the distance of the first jet. but I don't understand if he added, subtracted, multiplied or divided from the equation of tacking on 30 to both sides of 3X and 9X to equal 1080? I've been pondering on that for the longest!

Why wasn't the speed of the first jet set up as 10-2x since it says 10 less then 2 times the speed of the second jet. Why was the order switched around.

I don't understand how that equation was solved in 6X-30+3X9X-1080, did he simply add, subtract, multiplied or divided from the equation of tacking on the 30 to both sides of 3X and 9X? there is obviously something I missed there.

This is great, what if you try to solve the problem using minutes? You'd SHOULD get a speed of 2 miles per minute for the slow jet, and then insert in the fast jet equation which would give -6 miles per minute. Obviously this doesn't make sense. O.o Can someone solve this problem using minutes?
