For two equations I'd probably use either substitution method or addition method. 2x-y=18 3x+y=2 -------------- sub 2x-(-3x+2)=18 5x-2=18 5x=20 X=4 Plug 4 into x in either equation 3(4)+y=2 12+y=2 y=-10 {4,-10}

At the very beginning, where you need to turn 2 into 1, could you as well subtract 1 from R1 instead of dividing by 2? Is the sequence (R1C1, R2C1, R2C2 and then R1C2) fixed or can you go in any order?

The goal is to make the diagonals 1 and the other cells 0. You start with the 1st column, then the 2nd column, etc. In each column first make the diagonal element zero and then the rest of the elements in the column zero.
