Two ways to get the vertex: using algebra and using differentiation. Algebra: the formula -b/2a gives 6/2 = 3. So x = 3 and then we fill in 3 in the original quadratic function, which gives y = 9 - 18 - 7 = - 16. So the point of the vertex is (3, - 16). Using the differentiation formula gives the derivative y' = 2x - 6 which gives the slope. To find the vertex (slope = 0) we of course say: y' = 0 => 2x -6 = 0 , which gives x = 3. Of course the same result etc.

Former physics major, but graduated 27 years ago, went into medicine, and have not practiced mathematics since. I like to use this channel as a source of practice problems for my kids. When I read this problem, I was still able to use the calculus method to find the answer in my head within about 5 seconds. But I couldn’t for the life of me remember how to do the algebra method. I knew it had something to do with the factoring the quadratic expression, but I was drawing a blank from there. I guess my point is that calculus is lot easier than algebra.

You are the perfect position to appreciate and to understand everything now, of everything you have learned. It is like trying to explain multiplying 3 digits multiplied by 2 and more digits to 3rd or 4th grade. Sure you can use the short method for multiplying, since you understand value places, but most people forgets the most fundamental things about math. Besides, if you haven't done math related to subject at hand, on weekly or monthly bases, everything you have learned will be gone within 3 months. Repetition my friend, that is why you can remember calc but not alegbra.

I think finding the x-intercepts might be helpful to approximate the vertex, but I think, completing the square first would be most helpful? Or is it just me, who thinks that way?

When taken as a teaching method, this is great video. The egg-heads who are pounding their chest about calculating the answer in their heads are most fortunate. The intent of a teaching video is to show the beauty oh math and that anyone who wants to learn,…can! So, if are not entertained by this video, then stop watching it and cut the petty comments. Grow up!

We all get the answer but try to think away of how to explain to some one who never seen calculus. I think, the more ways to arrive at the right answer, the better off you are. Completing the square actually gives you the insights what x-int are or if any exists. Think of it this way. If some one gives you a prime polynomial asks you to factor it, then you might draw blank.
