thank you so much 😁it helps a lot😊 but what if the diagonal is also given in the prob?
@MichelvanBiezen7 жыл бұрын
If the diagonal is given then you have to use the relationship that the diagonal^2 = a^2 + b^2

LOL, I quickly solved this in my head and came up with 8 1/2 for each side, i.e., it was a square. "The length of a rectangle is three less than four times the width. The perimeter is 34. Find the length and the width." Since you didn't specify a unit of measurement in either sentence, I took "three less" to mean just what it says, "three less than four times the width," i.e., three widths less than four times the width, which = 1 width, therefore the "lengths" and "widths" are equal, meaning each side is 8 1/2 units. I remember seeing trick questions on tests, both standardized and those given by my teachers, and I thought this was one of them and that I had seen through it. It would have been easier for me to understand if you had specified units of measurement to say something like "the length of a rectangle is three meters/yards/ inches/ feet/etc. less than four times the width. The perimeter is 34 meters/yards/ etc."" Then there would have been no ambiguity. And yes, for those of you who are about to comment on how stupid I am because he specified a rectangle and not a square, a square is as much a rectangle as any other shape having four straight sides with four 90 degree angles. So yes, a square is a rectangle. That being said, thank you so much for what you do. It's fantastic and you're very generous with your time and effort and talents. Yours is an example of the best use of the Internet, and people are crazy not to take advantage of the work you've done. All the best to you. And thank you for your very clear and step-by-step explanations.

Nice I always have an issue when dealing with multiple variables. I know now that I’m looking for the smallest side to solve so that I can solve for the bigger ones later.
