Europe has to get their energy from somewhere, and not many countries rich in fossil fuels are democratic. Not to mention that there hasn’t been an intense wave of repression in Algeria. They score 32/100 on Freedom House’s Index, whereas Russia and Venezuela score 13 and 15, respectively.

I am Algerian, I was a neutral observer (in 2019 and 2024) and can attest the poles were right. The other candidates are completely unheard of and the re-elected president did a lot to get the country out of complete meltdown. People voted for the only person they trusted. India is FAR from being a democracy and should stick to its own business. Peace!

For some reason though, there was a lot of noise made by Western media outlets, think tanks and some government organisations before the elections had even begun (interference). The same thing would happen to Algeria, but since Algeria is a major energy exporter to these nations (especially in relation to Western sanctions on Russian, Iranian and Venezuelan energy sources) no interference occurs. Think about it.

It is not that how he managed to get 95%, it is just that the vast majority of voters didn't vote at all, most of who voted were his supporters. I didn't even know there was an election at that day. Algerians just got bored of democracy. Edit: USA just got a deal with the Algerian government to start oil exploration, after Exxonmobil and Chevron wasted tons of money in brazil, any disagreement with the Algerian government will see that deal cut off. Well I know this seems odd, but as an algerian I can say, Tebboun is not a bad president at all, he's one of the best we had in years, the problem is that he took the power of a broken country, torn apart by the old regime. So on the general level he's doing super good in politics and fixing the economy, we are now the 3rd best economy in africa, he raised salaries up to 100%, he put more social aid for unemployed people and still fighting to this day the loyals of the old regime who are making the progress low. but of course 5 years (in which 2 of Covid and 2 of Russian war) are not enough to reflect this on daily algerian life. Algerians didn't go to vote cuz they're just desperate for a quick economical rise. But that's not gonna happen now, we need more time. There are still more issues to fix. And this guy is not power hungry, as a fact the previous president made presidential terms illimited, Tebboun when he came he put it back to 2 terms, no dictator or power hungry president would do that. So please do not compare it with Putin or Maduro who have been in power for many years and both have illimited terms. Let's see what he can do this term then we can have the verdict by 2029.

The problem, thus, is not the terms, it's the process of the election itself. One must be realistic here: a score of 95% is just absurd. It's impossible that actually reflects reality, because no population that can freely vote will have that extremely high congruency on a political matter. Only dictators or heavy manupilation of the elections can give you a score of more than 90%, it's that simple. This has nothing to do with the question whether that president also has done good things. Both things can be true; they're not mutually exclusive. But that changes nothing to the fact these elections were clearly rigged, and the West is conveniently and hypocritically keeping quiet about it now.
