Although this film was made in French and then again by a different director and some cast changes, the details are very powerful and of a sophisticated psychology. It's what pre-code American films had. You start to get the feeling that the Code that came about wasn't just about sex, but about not showing real human behavior. Not showing big city sophistication to the burbs. Dumbing down America's self image. Too bad Hedy doesn't get to dig in in this role. She's pretty much the desired object. But what a great film.

A terrible remake of the original with the charming Jean Gabin, with which Boyer was no match. The singing of Gabin could not be lived up to. It is because of the cheap moralism of Hollywood that the final suicide sequence of Gabin was altered. This is an awful and cheap fake of the immaculate original. Just note how Hollywood at that time was a shameless and lowly copycat.
