If you're watching this on a wi-fi connection or on your smartphone you can thank Hedy- she invented a wireless frequency hopping communications system which evolved into cellular and wi-fi. EDIT- also- she donated the patent to the US Navy in support of the WW II war effort and never received a dime for these inventions.

Once considered the most beautiful woman in the world, Hedy Lamarr (approximately 23 years old when shooting "Algiers") ignored the Hollywood nightclubs and parties. She occupied her free time working in her laboratory that she had in her house. Her invention would be worth billions toady, yet she died with very little money.

When Charles Boyer is rhapsodising so beautifully and dreamily of Hedy, and how for him she evokes the joys of a spring morning in Paris, at 1:10:15 he also says she reminds him of the subway. But every Parisian would use the term "Le Métro".... A small point in a way, but probably very few French women or men referring to the City of Lights in such flights of admiration would use such a Americanism. It is even stranger because the street references used earlier be LaMarr and Boyer, such as Rue Rochechouart, make no concessions to the parochialism (or not) of a non-French audience. This is such a brilliant film, brimming with refined sentiments and profound emotions and complex schemes and cruel betrayals. It belongs to an age when women and men were completely adults in their conduct and feelings. To a time in fact when Americans, from Ralph Waldo Emerson, Oliver Wendel Holmes, TS Elliot to Henry James and Edith Wharton, admired France and Italy and even England ,and not the other way round. Love andrea

@leeluv4176
@leeluv4176 2 ай бұрын
As an algerian, i came here to defy the tarnished vision of the casbah to those who dont know the historical iconic place, in the 30s algeria was still under the french occupation, la casbah is a place habited by algerians alone, there are no gypsies, no french, no egyptians, etc, second it is not a place for criminals and thieves as the film introduction says, it is a place where algerian resistance used the secret passages, hidden staircases to defy the french occupation, it is a maze indeed, la casbah played a major role in our independence, it was a graveyard to every french soldier that entered it, but knowing this is fiction, i've let the part where a french thieve rules the place and acts like the king in his palace, i had to laugh really, but it is a good story, reminds me of casablanca, although the ending was sad, I do however like the women in Hayek, making part in some of the cuts, the music, no doubt Chaabi was also surprisingly accurate, we don't see Hedy Lamar allot however which is a bit of a bummer.
