Algodoo contraption - Gravity/water engine with exhaust system

A working engine that converts the downward force of water into angular momentum and ultimately linear motion, pushing this contraption along.
Took me about 2-3 hours and another 2 to fine-tune and streamline.
This Video is playing back at 5x recording speed, which is roughly real-time.
Please Excuse my shitty editing (and lack of sound/music), I really don't have the time or energy to include such things.

With the contraptions you make, I'd definitely recommend Algodoo over Phun. Runs smoother, easier to use, more accurate physic, pretty much beats in all departments.

Why don't you use a piston pump or something to get the water back up to top, then you don't need to have the exhaust and it can go infinitely (Unless it was IRL then the water would eventually evaporate :P)

Considered it, but i wanted to make it run purely on water, no motors. If I made a pump to push the water back up, I might as well use the pump motor to power the wheels.

You could use the gravity engine itself to provide the power for the pump.

TrainGuy That wont work, as the water falls through the machine, potential energy is converted to kinetic energy. It would take all (maybe more) of that energy output to pump it back up.

How did you do the driveshaft to the wheels? I've tried making one but never succeeded, and it' been a nightmare for trying ro make machines.

John KZbinr is just the centre wheel that's being driven. Lots of gear reduction. The "cams" (not really cams at all) were the hardest thing to get right with this build, the gear that opens and closes the valves.

PixelCortex Let me rephrase: how do you transmit the motion from the drive gear to the wheels? I see you have two gears lateral to each side, but they reach the wheels through a shaft, how did you do that? I've been trying to figure out how to make a drive shaft for months.

if you're talking about the yellow shafts, they are just for stability. If we start from one side, the transmission of power goes like this. Pistons -> orange gear -> grey gear -> big grey gear -> small centre grey gear -> pink gear -> lower grey gear, which is attached to the red wheel in the middle. The red wheel is the only one driving the machine along. If you were to transmit power through a shaft, the only way I know how to to that in 2D is to have the 4 bars connecting the wheels together, like I've done with the 2 sets of vertical orange gears. I hope that explains it.

Hey, don't worry about it JY - I'm stupid too lol. I was also wondering how the two little wheels at either end were receiving energy. So I scroll through the comments to look for an answer and see this post. Check the video again and totally facepalm for not noticing the big red friggin circle right there in the middle! Derp. To be fair though, it might be the case that the circle blends in well with the rest of those polygons that were dropped into the scene shortly after it started..
