Haha thanks for liking everything about the video 🤣 The nice Brookies made up for the poor weather, it was all worth it. That fish by the campsite was a beauty, I think the next time I go to the nipissing I will head from rosebary and then straight north on the Nipissing, fishing might be better on that stretch and maybe less alders?

Yeah spring is brook trout season!!! Love the net tent setup, because you can set it up for as much or as little airflow that you want. Does take a bit more time than a free standing tent though but is a bit lighter.

Derek Just discovered your channel and have now subscribed and will follow. Ice out in Algonquin is always a challenge even in good weather and your video is an example of what it's usually like in the early spring. Great trip video. Got to ask. What kind of rain gear did you have on this trip? Peter
@DerekSOutdoors9 ай бұрын
Thanks for subscribing, hoping to get in few more canoe trips for 2024. It was a very busy 2023 with me with family and work. And agree that spring canoe tripping is always a toss up with the weather, you can't never really trust the forecast either because conditions change so fast in the spring. As for rain gear I have 2 sets of rain equipment Spring where the water is cold and I expect to do some wading (this trip video). Waders: caddis Creek attractive 2 tone waders Jacket: Marmot Speed Light Goretex pro Jacket, don't think they make this one anymore, but they'll have something similar. Late spring/Summer when weather is a bit warmer (in the other trip video for the crow river) - rain pants: north face venture 2 rain pants (but most of the time I save the rain pants for wearing at camp over my long johns) I will just wear my vidda pro pants during the day since pants will get wet stepping in and out of the canoe. Jacket: Outdoor Research Helium rain jacket, it is light and packable, and when you just get a bit of rain, it gets the job done for half the weight and packed size as mu other jacket. What rain gear do you use?
@peterwerthner94389 ай бұрын
Derek Thanks for getting back to me. I was very interested in your rain gear because waders are something I've never used. Wet feet in the summer is one thing but in the spring it's a different story and always a challenge to keep them warm and dry. I may visit the idea of getting some waders. My rain gear, which I've had for several years, is from MEC. My jacket is a non-insulated Gore-Tex one which I use all year. In colder weather I simply add layers for warmth. Similarly with my Gore-Tex pants, they are unlined and I can wear layers as required on the colder days. The only thing I did with the pants was to buy one size larger (a little baggy) and add some suspenders instead of using the waist belt all the time. It makes it quite comfortable moving around in and it's particularly good when paddling . Not necessarily great on the portages, but I seldom wear rain pants when portaging. I should tell you that I'm an old man now !! I'm 77 and have been canoeing and spring fishing each year all my life, with my first spring fishing trip into Lavielle & Dickson lakes in Algonquin back in 1968. It's simply a "sacred" time for me each year - Spring Fishing. Obviously, I don't trip as hard as I used to, but as long as I can still get my canoe up onto my shoulders I'll continue. Derek. I'll continue to follow your adventures to all those places that I probably can no longer get to. 🎣 Peter@@DerekSOutdoors

@@peterwerthner9438 The waders are definitely great in the Spring🙂, I used to do what you do and just get my feet wet in the spring and wear Gore Tex pants, but after picking up fly fishing and having waders I decided to try wearing them for a spring trip and I am glad I did. Suggest you try the lighter weight waders, they are more breathable than the heavy duty ones which get quite hot. Next step up would be a dry suit, but I think that is overkill for a trip at Algonquin. 77 years young, you can still get out there. I actually brought my dad out last fall (I just posted that video) , it was an easy trip but he is almost 80 and can still do the portages. Will be bringing him out more this season. As for spring tripping, it's one thing that I really look forward to every year. Haven't decided where to go for this 2024 ice out trip, but hoping to go somewhere with Brook trout galore 🤩. Happy to hear suggested routes (I don't need fishing spots or anything, I like to explore to find those on my own by doing some research on topo maps🙂)

Amazing footage sir!!! So cool! Any booms you would recomend or certain maps for planning trips based on brook trout?
@DerekSOutdoors9 ай бұрын
Thanks!! I would definitely pick up the new "maps by Jeff" Algonquin map for trip planning for a fishing trip. For books I'd pick up any of Kevin Callan's (@TheHappyCamper) paddler books. He has great routes and you can find some trip ideas for Brook trout in there.

Despite the weather the overall trip was pretty good with some memorable highlights, especially the campsite bt - beautiful. Have you travelled the Tim River section between Shippagew Lake and Little trout/Queer Lake? I'm planning a fly fishing trip that loops around that area
@DerekSOutdoors6 ай бұрын
Tat campsite on rosebary is one of the best, wide open and you can still find firewood. I have travelled the Tim from shippagew toward queer, this was before my KZbin days (Going against current and paddled against a swift headwind back to the magnetawan access point) There were some wider open stretches that would be good for fly fishing from the canoe, but a lot of it was quite narrow and shallow with small log jams. I spent a lot of time dragging my boat through sand and mud because I did that trip in late June when the water levels were low. I am planning a trip up in that area this weekend, so I can report back on conditions next week.

Thanks for watching Jonathan, I am looking forward to your ice out trip, where did you go? And you should definitely try pogies, they are great, I saw someone using them a few years ago and it's a game changer for cold weather. If you're looking for the LEVEL 6 pogies Atmosphere has them for the lowest price, $28 I believe.

@@DerekSOutdoors Cool thanks for the info. The parc cancelled my planned trip, apparently access road was out of service, so last minute I reserved a pretty standard Tim lake access-Big Bob lake to Nipissing-Burntroute-Big Trout and back out via Sittingman lake etc. Will probably be several weeks before I get time to edit/upload it. Was a great trip even thou Mike and I both had colds at the start, weather was excellent, fishing was excellent, saw almost no one in the parc until the last day out.

@@jmullin funny you mention that route!! I was actually planning to do that same route for this ice out trip but decided last minute to do the short loop instead and save the vacation days to do a longer trip on the Crow River. Hi Derek, I did that route reverse around 28 yrs ago! Wow time flies, what is the brand of wader and boot you are wearing? Steve
@DerekSOutdoors7 ай бұрын
Hey Steve!! Did the route look similar to how it was 28 years ago?? Going up the Nipissing must have been rough I was wearing a set of caddis wadding systems waders and Patagonia Marlwalker wading boots. Been using them for a few years during colder rainy trips but they are starting to break. I have some Simms g3 waders and wading boots but they are too heavy to bring on a canoe trip, those are dedicated for fly fishing use 😅

Very nicely filmed. That was enjoyable to watch. That was so funny ... ``Look at that hook ... it`s useless !`` Also liked the tip on the Pogies ... just looked them up online. Strange that MEC and Sail don`t carry them.
@DerekSOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! That hook failure is a reminder to me to always check the hook after a snag!! 😅 For pogies, MEC usually has them at the end of winter and early spring but they tend to sell out quickly. I actually bought a spare pair of Level 6 branded pogies from atmosphere, they are currently on sale for $14.99, link is below. The level 6 is actually more comfortable around the knuckles than the Mec ones. www.atmosphere.ca/en/pdp/level-6-low-profile-comp-neoprene-pogies-12635680f.332058694.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjw9fqnBhDSARIsAHlcQYQ_OooPHsnurOcN9wzaPtnvANQls099Bb2xqAnaw7LehlctcltGSokaAl3QEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Nice trip Derek! That portage must of been tough to slow you down and that rain didn't help. The people at the campsite LOL. Never seen those gloves before, they look pretty neat but I never seen a Sundick before either 🤣🤣 For anyone else reading this comment, Derek used a camping table in a video called the Sundick. Sounded too weird without the explanation.
@DerekSOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Haha the weird off brand names that you find on AliExpress really cracks me up sometimes 😅,the Sundick brand may not have been the worse I have seen on there. Sometimes the better part is the attempt at Google translate translations. The rain made things difficult and slippery that day, but it's all part of ice out trips. The pogies definitely make a difference in rain and cold conditions, the LevelSix version of the pogies are more comfortable and pack smaller if you are looking for a pair (Atmosphere has them for the best price). As for the people at the campsite, it was so confusing because they answered to "Hey Curtis" and then we had a whole 2 minute conversation until I realized it wasn't Curtis 😂
