We're beginning our review of the Alhambra classical guitar line featuring Gordon O'Brien and Grant MacNeill. In this first sequence, Gordon and Grant are looking at the Alhambra 1c model.
The Alhambra model 1c Model is our entry point for solid-top classical guitars. The top is Red Western Cedar, which provides a warm, rich tone that will quickly open and develop as it is played. The back and sides are a mahogany laminate, which remains stable through many changes in temperature and especially humidity.
For more information, please visit our post on the Alhambra 1c :

I do not agree with them that it is only a beginners instrument. Playing classical guitar for 40 years, having played numero’s other guitars, it is still one of my favourites to play. Pricewise they are talking 600 bugs, you can buy it though for a little over 300 euro’s. I think it is absoluters worth the money.

How expensive shall a good guitar be?

@@ma1946 I don't think expense is the issue. Of course the higher price you go, the better build quality you'll get. There are great cheap guitars though. I bought a Tanglewood Crossroads 0 for £99. It's very cheap but a great sounding guitar for the money. It's not a hard top or anything but it sounds good, the action is fine etc.

Have had and loved mine for ~15 years, and only gets better with age. I had a friend who liked it so much he ended buying far more expensive guitars chasing the sound and was never quite satisfied.

A nigh on perfect beginner guitar: nicely made, sounds great and easy to play. I have a more expensive guitar too now but won't part with my 1C. To say it is my beater guitar does not do it justice but I can take it everywhere without worrying about damaging an instrument worth thousands of pounds.

Got one a few days back as a replacement for one of my guitars that died in the aftermath of my water damaged homestudio. I have owned more than 20 guitars and this is among the very best at a fraction of the price, you can't get a better instrument at that price point (except maybe some handcrafted Kravic Lyras but that's another story entirely).

Hey, I have a little inquiry. I have this guitar on year ago and I've learned some Bach's pieces, but I'm now learning flamenco techniques and I'm afraid of hitting the guitar to the point I can make an incision or sort of a whole on it. I'm practicing the golpe technique. Do you know whether the wood would bare the constant striking? I'm not sure whether to keep practicing on this one or buy a flamenco one. Thanks.

John, thanks for your question. Certainly, there's a very good chance of wear or damage to the top since actually striking the top for a percussive effect is a key flamenco technique. This is what thin plastic tap plates or the golpeador are for. These are very common on flamenco instruments, typically extend past both the treble and bass sides of the strings, and are light enough to not restrict the top vibration. Most are clear and made of mylar or a similar material. Flamenco styles can be played on more traditional classical instruments like yours. But, parts of the flamenco tone comes from the guitar's setup - the saddle and strings are much lower than on a traditional classical and this allows string rattle, along with reducing the effort for the left hand when playing fast. So, I would suggest looking into having tap plates installed, and keep going with the guitar you now have! Regards, The Twelfth Fret

12fretguitarshop Awesome. I'll sure do thanks for the help! Haha I was reading about this and I think I'm going to get one of those golpeadores. I think this flamenco-driven efforts I'm doing now are just to change the routine a bit. I'm more into Classical guitar, so most likely I'll just learn a bit and go back to my normal studies. ^^ Thanks a lot, again!

Not familiar with Cordoba as a US branded guitar. I hear cheaper made in China more expensive in Spain. I would say go with Alhambra though: lovely finish and nice tone.

These things are ~$800AUD. How is that entry level? That's nowhere near entry level. I have an $80 classical. That's entry level.
@wquitw0727

it might be a bit overpriced in your region(when my parents bought mine as a kid it was priced at around 260eur in my country) but objectively 1C/1P is the highest tier of the "entry level" (2C-3C are not even worth mentioning) for guitars and this model offers too much compared to its price tag,which is actually low for something you dont change every month and even after getting later a professional guitar, 1C holds its value in practicing, since a more expensive one requires proper maintenance in order to last so it s not always efficient to bring out of its case and warm-up on a 2500+ eur guitar. next notable tiers for alhambra models are probably 4P and 9P
What's the difference between a classical and a Flamenco guitar?
