Ali Gomaa, Salvation, and Imam al-Ghazali

A recent clip has been circulating where Shaykh Ali Gomaa (my shaykh) explains to a young girl that paradise is not only for Muslims. This has caused a lot of back-and-forth online and rather than respond to these specifically, I wanted to discuss the theological point of view the Shaykh is teaching. The same point of view I was taught (by him nearly three decades ago) and what I teach my students and community.

Thank you Sheikh for this explanation. I always found it unfair that the majority of the Muslim community calls all non-Muslims "kuffar" in a sense that they will go to hell without knowing whether or not they received the correct message and decided to deny it. Imagine someone telling you that you don't believe their story (example) without them even telling you their story, it's absurd. The prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received the first revelation at age 40, this doesn't mean that from the age of puberty until 40 he was a non believer, of course not, similarly, people who didn't receive the message yet cannot be judged until they hear about it. Question: will we as Muslims living in non-Muslim communities and interacting with non-Muslims in the workplace, school, neighbourhood etc. be held accountable for why we did not convey the message to them? is delivering the message to them an obligation? how can we go about it in the best way given all the challenges?

I think the objections are that he worded things in a way that seemed to strongly imply that prior religions still have salvific efficacy according to the Qu'ran, even after the advent of Islam. Had he said what you've said in this video, I don't think there would be the same level of controversy.

He has said exactly what I said multiple times since I’ve been his student. In fact this is what he taught me. I still don’t see how this is an issue unless people want to read into what’s not there. Those kids in the audience certainly understood and thankfully they will be the ones to build a better tomorrow rather than the ugly today we unfortunately have today.

Sheikh, is it permissible to to call non Muslims kuffar in general? Or is it only for those knowingly reject the Message of Islam?

Al-Qaadi Ayyaad said: hence we regard as a kaafir everyone who follows a religion other than the religion of the Muslims, or who agrees with them, or who has doubts, or who says that their way is correct, even if he appears to be a Muslim and believes in Islam and that every other way is false, he is a kaafir (Al-Shifaa bi Tareef Huqooq al-Mustafaa, 2/1071) And they are the Jews and Christians. They are disbelievers (Kufaar) without any dispute from anyone in the Ummah. Whoever denies their disbelief (Kufr), then he himself is in a state disbelief (Kufr) and has left Islam, there is no dispute (or difference) from anyone in the Ummah regarding this (too). (Imam Abu Muhammad Ibn Hazm, al-Fasl fi al-Milal). And they (the scholars) agreed upon calling the Jews and Christians disbelievers (Kufar). (Imam Ibn Hazm, Maratib al-Ijmaa).

Is someone who hasn't fulfilled all the conditions of taklif and isn't a Muslim a kafir?

Sheikh Kuftaro former Grandmufti of Syria said the same about ayat 2:62 as Ali Gooma. This ayat was revealed because Salman Farisi ر asked the holy prophet ﷺ about the christians of his time. Islam gives ahlu kitab freedom of religion and all rights as dhimmis. A muslim is allowed to live with a christian wife and family. Holy prophet ﷺ had a christian wife. How is this possible, if the christians go definitive to hell? Holy prophets ﷺ intersession is for whole mankind, this is claerly proven through hadith sahih. Ibn Qayyim narrates a hadith, that Allah ﷻ brings with his hand poeple to paradise without asking them. Umar ر said, who can then be left without salvation? Holy prophet ﷺ replied " it is as Umar said"! (Hadi al-arwah, Ibn Qayyim)
