Welcome back everybody! So, lots of you have seen my A level results video and have since been asking me how I got an A* in English language.
Rather than just copying and pasting the same dm to everyone, I thought it was about time I made a video explaining how I did it (on the eve of the English language exam).

This was really helpful, especially since I'm going into Yr13 this September (2020) and I have mocks at the end of the month. It's better for me to put more effort in now just in case if my A-Levels get cancelled next year in 2021. Then at the very least I'll have done well and will have a chance at being able to do English Language and Creative Writing at University.

Hey, loved this video because it’s so jam packed of handy info! Basically I’m at the end of Year 10 at the minute, and I’ve been wondering which a-levels to choose. There’s so much on KZbin for English Literature but not English Language!! So I was wondering if you could do a video in the future please just summarising your whole experience with English Language, what the course includes and why you chose it etc. If you could do that it’d be SO helpful cos I don’t know which English to pick!! Thank you so much😊

Definitely! I can't recommend English language enough - I like analysing modern texts and articles etc... I love plays but can't stand poetry so that made the decision pretty easy for me! Grammar is a huge part of English language, but once you get it, you'll fly through - it's kind of just like cracking a code in my mind. I definitely went through my ups and downs with English language but loved it in the end!

Alice Preece thank you so much for replying that’s so helpful! Yeah the thought of having to remember SO many quotes and study novels, plays and poetry kinda puts me off Lit a bit because I like it at GCSE but don’t know if I could do the a-level! And idk, I kinda want to try journalism when I’m older so I think Lang would help me more with writing my own stuff maybe??

Hello! Hope you reply to this comment since I'm in need of a lot of help. I've decided to give English language as a private candidate to improve my equivalence percentage. I chose English since I've always been good at it and I'm honestly not looking to get an A* or even an A, a B or C would be fine for me. Have no idea where to begin and even after watching this and noting everything down I do not know where to start and what to do. Any idea what I should study and follow to create a basic understanding of it because I understand what we're supposed to look for in texts but if there's a way where I could understand what the things that I'm looking for ARE (such as a lexis, semantics etc) would be of much help.

My teacher said that it doesn’t matter if you repeat everything that you mentioned in question 1&2 because a different examiner marks each question ?
@AlicePreece
@AlicePreece 5 жыл бұрын
That’s fair enough - I was told don’t repeat everything. Some repetition is inevitable, but I tried not to repeat exactly what I had already said in Q1&2

I would do just a short intro where you gap the text and give a lil bit of context, just so you can’t be marked down for poor essay structure 🙌

Is reading novels important for alevels eng lang? if yes then to what extent? And I had to ask you that can we prepare for a levels English language in almost 4 months? how many months did it take you to get prepared for English language? When did you start preparing for them and when were your exams? And also that what level or standard of English do we need to get an a or a star in the exam because there is so much of a hype that sooo much high level English is needed and I am vague that what is standard do we need. And also English is not my first language. Your precious suggestions would be incredibly helpful, thank you!
@AlicePreece
@AlicePreece 3 жыл бұрын
Reading novels is not important at all for English language! I started hard core revising around March/April for exams in early June I’d say you do need a strong understanding of the English language to be able to analyse meanings in texts and explain their purpose using different language levels

@AlicePreece

Not really - it’s how things/people/places are represented in the text - how they’re represented by the writer through the use of language, grammar and context. You can even talk about how the writer represents themselves!
