The guitar actually reads, "Friends don't let friends get Friends haircuts" (referring to the tv show "Friends"). If memory serves, it was a comment on the fact that the members of Metallica had recently cut their hair short.

Exactly, the Metallica guys were in the front row (they were friends with the band) and they had just cut their hair and were getting some hate from a part of their audience that were accusing them of "selling out" for doing so.

Thank you, this is my 2nd Alice in Chains song you have reacted to. The singer Layne Staley had a voice like no other, this was in 1996 and he was in bad shape from being dope sick, he had hardly no teeth and they thought he wouldn't show up. Jerry Cantrell the guitarist had food poisoning and they had a trash can beside him. This would be one of the last shows they would ever do together. Sadly Layne passed away in 2002. Jerry and Layne had great harmonies and out of the big 4 in the grunge era AIC were the darkest. The full Phrase on Mike Inez bass said " Friends don't let friends get Friends haircuts", referring to the show Friends when Metallica got their hair cut short and were sitting in the front row. Thank you again for the reaction and glad you liked it.

Layne still had most of his teeth here, you can get glimpses of them throughout this show and their appearance on late night show right around same time, it’s become a myth that he was missing most his teeth at this point. What is true is that his teeth were not in good condition at all and Layne was very self conscious about it so he did all he could to hide it, he refrained from opening his mouth nearly as wide as in his younger years and it slightly impacted his enunciation at times because you could tell he was trying to keep his mouth as closed as he could and keep his lips covering his teeth
@Chris-jv1zo9 ай бұрын
@@puppetmaster8551 According to an interview with Jerry he said Layne had mush mouth which meant most of Laynes upper teeth were missing. I'm not putting this great singer down but to be in the shape he was in and give that amazing performance speaks volums for the talent this man had.R.I.P. Layne. No one will ever replace Layne.

Welcome to my favorite band, here in their acoustic incarnation. AIC could get very heavy when they wanted to, but they always had this other stripped-down side. Layne, the lead singer here, had a truly unique voice but for this performance he was in very poor shape due to addiction. Jerry, the other vocalist on guitar, wrote this song about not being able to be with the woman he loved.
@PainInTheS8 ай бұрын
Definitely my favorite band from the grunge era. Layne Staley's voice.....more haunting is impossible. I played their albums during evening shifts in the supermarket I worked at back in the day. Walkman ears in front of the microphone used during daytime for messages, rubberband over the button so the line was open and we had music! Whole album played, then after a while played again.....one of the guys started it again and I asked 'again'' to which he replied 'Yeah....that voice man, that voice'. And now all those years later my own son has a poster of Layne Staley in his room for over 10 years. Left us too soon! I also remember buying the first 2 Alice in chains album back when the 2nd came out, in a store around the corner where I lived in Amsterdam. The girl who helped me said 'Whooaah, you're gonna mess up your neighbours with these cd's' 😁
@steves.65197 ай бұрын
At 3:46, you see Jerry nod to the rest of the band. My opinion was he was saying to them "Layne's still got it". At the time, he was deep into his addiction and they never knew how bright his star was going to shine each performance.
@billtroxell21487 ай бұрын
that statement wrote on the guitar was for the band members from Metallica, who came out and played for an hour unplugged, before Alice in Chains got to play and they stayed and watched them perform (Metallica watched AIC) and so they got a big laugh when they read and saw what was on the guitar. Just good fun between the bands

I live in Seattle and was in my 20s when they were around town. In the late 90s/early 00s, My buddy worked in a coffee shop in the University District near where singer Layne owned a condo, he'd sometimes come into the shop. He called my buddy "Tor Tor" based upon his name. Layne had a really bad heroin and crack cocaine habit, by the time he died he essentially had lost all of his teeth and was rail thin. He'd become almost a complete shut-in. Singer Mark Lanegan from another Seattle band Screaming Trees wrote a memor a few years ago, in that book he detailed how he and Layne had started a crack cocaine dealing business out of Lanegan's apartment in the First Hill neighborhood. This while making a lot of money with Alice in Chains. I really like the trackk "Junkhead" from their album "Dirt", it details heroin and drug use in general. You might also like the track "River of Deceit" by the band Mad Season. Layne sang the lead vocal part on that song and the band was a project featuring members of Screaming Trees and Pearl Jam. THe project was meant to get Layne working on something to get him away from hard drugs.

That was a stab at Metallica on his Bass, it said "Friends dont let friends get friends haircuts" because Metallica was there at this performance and they had made fun of Layne in previous concerts and then they went and cut their hair, so the reference was towards them because of the show Friends hahaha.
