It's kind of amazing none of you had heard Nirvana before. They were arguably the biggest band in the world in the 90s and had a genre of music (Grunge) based off of their sound. Smells Like Teen Spirit is their biggest hit. Definitely worth giving a listen to.

@@OldSkoolDad23 writing is feelings, but I understand what you are saying having to do with him. But it is not easy just because it is feelings, believe me. It is very very hard to expresse them in a clear focused way in the construct of a larger piece of writing...the song. And some of the simplicity of it is also not easy. Giving a universality to those feelings comes from a strong spirit.

Wow, what a song choice for your first entry into Nirvana! As others have commented, Nirvana single handedly changed the music industry in the early 90s. I was in high school and lived through the impact they had on what everyone was listening to. "Lithium" and "Come As You Are" are two other songs of theirs you should definitely check out. And then their unplugged concert a few years later was epic, another special moment in music history. As for "that drummer"? You NEED to react to Foo Fighters. The drummer, Dave Grohl went on to form Foo Fighters and they have epic songs. Start with their song "Pretender".

Never heard of Nirvana?!? This band DEFINED the 90's decade 😁 They came out of Seattle and turned the rock scene on its head in 1991 and the entire music industry changed overnight in 1992 - everything 80's went out the door because of Nirvana ... It was crazy. But the band was short-lived and met a tragic end in 1994. Kurt Cobain was born and raised in Olympia, Washington... his parents' split and he felt frustrated in the conservative, dead end part of the country... Getting into rock music as a teen in the 80's gave him inspiration. He loved The Beatles and eventually got into heavier music like Black Sabbath, Celtic Frost and Led Zeppelin... He wanted to play music and became friends w/ Buzz Osbourne, a guitarist who fronted a popular local indie band The Melvins... Buzz Osbourne taught Kurt how to play guitar, but he could never be as proficient as the lead guitarists of the 80's... so, Kurt focused on making simple, heavy riffs and memorable melodies. In 1987, he met punk rock bassist Krist Novoselic and he decided to form a band w/ the tall, striking bass player... Eventually, Chad Channing (drums) joined and Kurt Cobain (vocals & guitar) named the band Nirvana by 1988 ... he began writing his own songs and had a clear idea of what he wanted to play and sound like early on... A local record label Sub Pop was interested in signing Nirvana, but they had to self-finance their own record. Guitarist Jason Everman loaned them about $600 to do the album and was given credit on the album's liner notes... Nirvana released their debut album "Bleach" in 1989... The trio was raw, abrasive and explosive onstage... and they were unlike anything out there at the time. Most 80's bands had to have the big hair, spandex pants, leather outfits and boots... Nirvana were 3 greasy, long-haired guys wearing cheap flannel shirts and torn jeans and sneakers (They were so broke that they couldn't afford anything else!)... the bass player was tall, the drummer was an elf... Kurt looked like a derelict... but their image was not something the music industry had produced... Despite being completely unknown, Nirvana generated a buzz in the indie scene and even got to tour Europe... In 1990, Nirvana had a new batch of songs and made some demos in Wisconsin w/ producer Butch Vig but had no finances to make the record. In 1991, Nirvana was getting offers from major labels and signed w/ Geffen Records, who gave them little money but full creative freedom and a good royalty rate... they decided to hire producer Butch Vig from Wisconsin and make the record in Van Nuys, California... Dave Grohl (drums) had replaced Channing by early '91 and one of the new songs that had come from a jam session was the song 'Smells like teen spirit'... Butch Vig opted to polish Nirvana's sound in the studio and gave the band an album that was way ahead of "Bleach". With a 2nd album 'Nevermind' set for release in the fall of 1991, Nirvana were still broke and took gigs to keep promoting themselves... the label hired a school gym that became the filming set for the music video for 'Smells like teen spirit'... which was to be the first single. MTV put it on the air and it exploded in popularity overnight and radio started playing it everywhere... Nirvana went to Europe to play a few shows, and when they returned in November, they were shocked to learn that 'Nevermind' was at #1 on the US charts where it had knocked off Michael Jackson's 'Dangerous' album... 'Nevermind' was selling so fast in late '91 that Geffen Records had to order more copies of the album than any other artist on their roster. In 1992, Nirvana had become an overnight sensation and Kurt Cobain and the band were on all the magazine covers... Nirvana was selling out everywhere and all over MTV and radio... In Europe, Asia, Australia, S. America... Nirvana was fast becoming a sensation. They went from 3 broke guys to having made million$ that year... Suddenly, other bands from Seattle were blowing up as well - Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains... were a few that were suddenly selling millions of records as well in 1992 and the press was calling the new Seattle rock sound "grunge rock"... Overnight, 80's bands like Poison, Warrant, Bang Tango, Enuff Z'nuff... went from being popular to becoming ridiculed and unhip in the 90's decade. Nirvana spent 1992 on the road, the opted to take a break. Kurt Cobain had married his girlfriend Courtney Love, who was the singer/ guitarist of her indie rock band Hole, and the 2 welcomed a daughter - Frances Bean. In late 1992, Geffen Records opted to release a collection of unreleased Nirvana songs as the album 'Incesticide'... which included the song 'Aneurysm'... However, the band's troubles were only beginning. Kurt Cobain had been suffering from a painful stomach ailment and doctors were unable to explain or alleviate his pain... Sadly, he turned to he+++n (like many of the youth in Washington state) and it was getting out of control by 1993... Kurt was also resolved to making Nirvana's next album 'In Utero' a more natural, raw album than the polished 'Nevermind'... Released in 1993, 'In Utero went to #1 on the charts, but there was controversy, especially the song 'Rape me' that Wal Mart objected to (The band changed the title on the CD cover to 'Waif me' to placate the store chain) ... Nirvana also appeared on 'MTV Unplugged' where Kurt Cobain gave one of the greatest acoustic performances in the show's history, all done in 1 take... Instead of playing Nirvana's hits, the band opted to play some cover songs that no one had heard (by The Vaselines, Meat Puppets, David Bowie) and ended the set w/ a powerful version of Leadbelly's "Where did you sleep last night". In 1994, Nirvana went to play a European tour but in Italy, Kurt Cobain made headlines when he attempted suicide w/ pills... He was revived and sent back home where both he an Courtney Love went to rehab separately in the Spring. However, Kurt jumped the fence of the facility and disappeared... Friends recalled meeting him boarding a flight back to Seattle in April. In April 1994, an electrician came by to work on Kurt Cobain's home in Seattle... He saw a body inside the house and notified the police. The body was that of Kurt Cobain and he had left a suicide note explaining his turmoil. He had apparently purchased a shotgun and shot himself up w/ he+++n a final time before using the shotgun on himself - he had to be identified w/ his fingerprints. Kurt Cobain was only 27 years of age. Nirvana was over... his death left a huge void in the 90's rock scene. Dave Grohl (drums) took a few months off before he opted to start a new band from scratch w/ an album he had written and played everything on (guitar/ bass/ drums/ vocals) ... He called the new Foo Fighters and released the album in 1995... Dave Grohl (vocals & guitar) hired Nirvana's touring guitarist Pat Smear w/ Nate Mendel (bass) and William Goldsmith (drums) and began touring in '95/ '96 but refused to play any Nirvana songs live... The album became a platinum success and Grohl was able to have a second successful career w/ Foo Fighters. Krist Novoselic (bass) did some projects after Nirvana (Sweet 75... Eyes Adrift) but he eventually left the music industry and focused on being a local politician... He and Dave Grohl are still friends to this day. In 2002, a greatest hits 'Nirvana' album was released w/ the last song Kurt Cobain recorded w/ the band - "You know you're right"... his raw emotions were on full display near the end of his life 😪

This show was called - Live At The Paramount - a relatively small local venue, and was recorded in the literal days between them being absolute nobodies and becoming the biggest band in the world. Their video for Smells Like Teen Spirit had just begun to blow up. Kurt was the ultimate reluctant rock star, and once they blew up he became very awkward, reserved, he and pulled back a lot. But here they would have been very excited for what was coming - everything they worked so hard for was coming. That drummer is the absolute rock legend Dave Grohl, the singer and guitar player for The Foo Fighters. It's always been crazy to me that such a great drummer had all that other talent hiding inside. Reminds me of Pau.

It's hard to overstate just how impactful Nirvana was to music, especially at that time. Before Nirvana, all of the top Rock and Metal bands were basically commercial hair-spray bands such as Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, Guns 'N Roses' etc. Bubble-gum stuff. Nirvana, seemingly overnight, completely killed an entire genre of music with their release of Smells Like Teen Spirit and the subsequent album release of "Nevermind." Suddenly music shifted to alternative rock with bands such as Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden rising alongside Nirvana. To this very day, many of the biggest artists (including both Rock, Country, and surprisingly Hip Hop) cite Nirvana, more specifically vocalist Kurt Cobain, as a massive inspiration for their music. Despite their brief existence before Kurt's suicide, they have left an enduring legacy that can still be felt in music today.

I would be surprised if you did not recognize some of their biggest mainstream songs ("Lithium", "In Bloom", "Come As You Are", "Smells Like Teen Spirit") when you heard them...Between 1991-1994, probably the biggest rock band in the world. Everybody recognizes "Smells Like Teen Spirit"...I expect my mother recognized this song...The drummer, Dave Grohl, later moved to the front as singer and guitarist, and has the successful band Foo Fighters. An unusual choice to introduce someone to the band; this is certainly diving off the deep end into the sort of super DIY, Sub Pop, punkier side. The other songs I mentioned are (somewhat) more conventional, but still hard hitting. If you liked this, I think you will like most of their music. Recommend this ferocious performance of "Breed" live at the Paramount in 1991: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnjGaZ2Cacmtl9E

I so fucking miss Nirvana, and I also just missed Nirvana. I was 14 in 1994 when my friend gave me a tape of In Utero, I loved it, I had never really been in to music before then, I asked him about the band and he said "The band is gone, the guy killed himself three months ago". I was heartbroken but I spent all the cash that I had buying up everything by Nirvana I could find, studio albums, compilations, bootlegs, I was in love.

In Halloween of 1991 i was trick or treating through an active 31" northern Minnesota snowstorm. My pillow case full of candy soaked from all the snow i had to try to walk through. So no, i did not listen to Nirvana at this point. And actually hated all music until high school.

They were unarguably the biggest band in the 90s. Numbers don’t lie. That’s why Kurt is no longer with us, the fame really messed with him. I have no idea where you’d have to be in 1994 not to have heard of them. Unless you weren’t old enough yet. That girl on the left appears to be my age and I was about 15 when he died.

I couldn't think of a better introduction to Nirvana actually. When Kurt died a lot of people didn't know who he was.. 33 years later.. it's kind of surprising people haven't heard, let alone heard of Nirvana.. but that's just me.. I was onboard since the second album this was a track on.

Finally a real Nirvana song. I swear Kurt never would have done that Unplugged show if he knew it would be his only legacy. These guys single-handedly erased the 80s, and ushered in the 90s - not just musically, it was a complete change in the entire popular culture. Fashion, TV, music. Every massive rock band was crushed by their influence - gone were the fishnets and hairdye, and all of a sudden everyone - GNR, Motley Crue, Poison, the Mighty Metallica - were all wearing plaid, like the Seattle scene that Nirvana came from. Pawn shops were filled with pointy flourescent guitars that nobody wanted anymore lol. And every band changed their sound completely following the Grunge explosion that followed, most notably Metallica. Far more influential than they were talented - which is saying a lot - they were master performers and songwriters, despite their simplistic approach to both.

Unplugged is not his only legacy. Come on now. Smells Like Teen Spirit and Nevermind is the biggest part of his/their legacy. They have a ton of songs from all of their albums that are part of the Rock Canon. Killing Hair Metal and knocking MJ off the #1 spot on the charts is a big part of their legacy as well. Unfortunately his suicide is too. A robust and complicated legacy. Yes - Unplugged is one of the big pieces, but absurd to say it's his only legacy.

@@garysimonson1135 His legacy is what his fans make of it, and judging by what his fans push to these reaction channels his legacy is 95% MTV Unplugged. Not to mention, it's often the cover songs that are recommended most. Sad, cause Nirvana was clearly a rock band. Just look at them here, in all their glory.
