One thing about Jerry smiling after Layne hitting that first high note.. Laney was at a really bad state at this unplugged moment. Their live performances were kinda rare due to Layne's conditions (this unplugged was one of their last performances together), so there was kinda an uncertainty if Layne would be able to perform well on that night. But when it comes to a legendary singer, we know they may surprise us for sure. It's visible he was weakened and seemed deceased on this (if you watch a more healthy version of him, you'll notice the difference on the power of his voice). But yet, even in that bad shape he was, he was able to reproduce a very haunting and beautiful performance. So that's why Jerry gave that smile and looked to the other band members saying like "see? I told you guys he would get this."

yep.. a dead man existing is what ur seein here.. its fucked up to be that depressed.. i watched these videos in my darkest days alone homeless in my truck in the midnight hours.. looking out my window.. being on drugs is one thing.. but beeing depressed on top of them is a disaster.. i used to do meth and shoot up heroin.. my 2 go to drugs on a daily basis for 2 years alone in a truck with my puppy dog that hated me so i let her out and she disappeared while i went to sleep and gave up on life.. anyways yeah its a sad fucked up concert seein a dyin man push on a ticking time bomb of self destruction

They hadn’t been performing for years before this performance, because of Layne’s drug use and sickness. They didn’t perform much after this either. That’s why this performance is so special. It almost didn’t happen, and they were concerned that Layne wouldn’t be able to perform at a high level. That’s why Jerry smiled and winked when Layne hit that first long note. He insisted that Layne would be able to do it, and the wink was a, “I told you he’s still got it.”

It is so amazing to me that Layne died before KZbin was even created. Never in his wildest dreams could he have predicted so many people would be watching his videos on demand on this type of platform. There's loads of fantastic bassists, but for me, the entire Unplugged set AIC did had the best pure bass tone I've ever listened to AND was placed at the perfect level in the mix. Great bassist, great tone, plus great mix = absolute perfection. Usually at least one of those elements will be notably weaker than the others, but not here.

I always loved the Bass tone from AIC very ominous although this was not the original Bass player I am pretty sure he was kicked out for his drug problems and he died some years after Layne did I think he was the last person to see Layne alive.

The lead singer’s name is Layne Staley. He is my favorite vocalist of all time and he sounds great here. But he is half the vocalist here than he was in his prime. He was deep in heroin addiction at this point.

This wasn’t his prime. This was actually the last live performance by Layne. He was so wasted during this performance they had to have a stage hand adjust him on his stool during breaks so he wouldn’t slip off. It is a huge loss and Layne following this became a hermit and barely went out in public. Jerry and Layne together were superb song writers produced such great music together.

When Jerry (the guitarist) does that cheeky smile once Layne hits that note, he did that cause there were lots of doubters regarding if Layne still had the ability to hit those insane notes. And when he executed the note perfectly, Jerry couldn't help but smile and be like ya told you so. Layne is the greatest grunge vocalist ever, a true genius and master of the art

Layne had one of the most powerful voices I’ve ever heard at his peak. But this unplugged performance really shows what made him exceptional. Even when he’s frankly a shell of himself, he can still project such emotion into his performance. Layne can make you feel fury or pain or love or joy or brokenness, but he can always make you FEEL.

I have read from several articles that the reason for Layne’s flubbing of the lyrics, was due to the people he wrote them about sitting in the front row. Namely, the record label execs who had called the studio to let the band know they had nine days to finish the album. So apparently it ended up being ultra-awkward for Layne to sing those lines with them sitting right there. Although, I also read he did just a little bit of H before going onstage to avoid suffering withdrawals.

This song is a love song from guitarist Jerry Cantrell to the love of his life Courtney Clarke. Early pressings listed this as the 12th track in the album. Later pressings listed this as the 4th track supposedly to fit better with the band’s desire to have the album loosely tell a story from song to song. Songwriter and guitarist Jerry Cantrell said of the song in the Music Bank box set liner notes, “Down in a Hole’s in my top three, personally. It’s to my long-time love. It’s the reality of my life, the path I’ve chosen and in a weird way it kind of foretold where we are right now. It’s hard for us to both understand…that this life is not conducive to much success with long-term relationships." Once Layne got his voice where he wanted it, it stayed there with little effort. He was always better live than studio version. Layne's vocal range can run rings around any other grunge singer in my opinion. Layne could sing the phone book and never hit a wrong note. Even at the end of his life, with no teeth and a lisp, his voice, wit and humor were all still there. Layne's voice and vocal range was so powerful he did NOT need auto tune or pro-tools until he lost his teeth and had a lisp around 1998, and even then he still killed the vocals. Barrett Martin (who played with Layne in Mad Season) said that when he stood to the side of the stage, he could hear the sound of Layne's vocal resonance come out of Layne's body LOUDER than it did coming out of the speakers, Layne's voice was that powerful. Layne's story is more tragic and haunting because you can actually watch and hear him deteriorate over the 12 year span: from the mild use of drugs in 1990 all the way through 1996 when he was deep into a heroin addiction to dropping to 90 pounds by 1998 to 86 pounds when he died in 2002. Layne was so much more than his drug addiction. He was able to come up with lyrics and harmonies off the top of his head. He knew enough to know that Jerry Cantrell was playing with the wrong people and gave him contact info for Sean Kinney and Mike Starr. He wrote the lyrics for the songs he sang on Mad Season's Above album and drew the cover art for that album. Layne was a genius in his own right. He still was able to figure things out in a snap off the top of his head. Layne just had his demons. With MTV Unplugged, when Layne finally gave the Okay to do it. They were supposed to rehearse in Seattle but NO one showed up. Sean, Mike and Jerry would show up at different times but Layne would be MIA or Layne would show up for one or two songs and then leave. When they finally got to New York, Sean and Mike had an argument with Jerry because they thought with Layne's condition and addiction, he wouldn't be able to hit the high notes. Jerry was the ONLY ONE who was confident that Layne could do it. When you watch DOWN IN A HOLE Unplugged, and Layne hits that high note, you see Jerry look over at Sean and Mike with this "I TOLD YOU SO!" smirk. Layne did it again on ROOSTER Unplugged and Jerry did that same smirk. The Unplugged show in 1996 is so heartbreaking to watch because Layne was deep in his heroin addiction (and yes, I know he was doing other drugs on top of Heroin). His liver was damaged and he knew it. He was just high enough to do the show to fight off withdrawal symptoms and he didn't get dope sick. He was such a ghost of himself during Unplugged. (Of course, Jerry had food poisoning) All Jerry saw when he looked over at Layne was his best friend was going to die soon due to the path Layne had chosen for his life. That show was filmed in April, 1996, premiered in May 1996. They did four shows with KISS in June-July 1996, after which Layne survived an overdose and became a recluse. After that, it was a six-year-long slow suicide. MTV (and the music industry) has more or less blackballed Layne (and yet, they laud over Kurt Cobain every April 5th, because Kurt was the "face of grunge", meanwhile Layne gets a "by the way"). The Grammys went so far as to invite Jerry, Mike and Sean to the Grammy show in 2003 and then refused to put Layne's picture up in the memorial of the musicians who died in 2002. (Or they "forgot" to) which pissed Jerry, Mike and Sean off and they walked out on the show. The friendship between Jerry and Layne was unbreakable. Jerry NEVER once thought of replacing Layne as the singer while Layne was still alive. He always wanted Layne to sing whenever he had AIC do something. If there were ever cosmic soulmates ... Layne and Jerry would be it. (And by that I mean, they were Sympatico with each other. The way they sang together was a perfect pitch where two voices make one. What you hear and see between Jerry and Layne was a genuine friendship. They looked after each other. When one had problems with a song, the other picked up the slack. They were a team. Jerry was doing a solo concert in Charlotte, NC when he heard that Layne was found two weeks after he died and Jerry was trying to get through the concert and crying. He did shows between the time he found out about Layne until Layne's funeral because if he had taken a break then, he didn't think he'd want to continue anything later after the mourning period. Alice In Chains was a band, but they were also a family. They had internal issues just like any family. When Layne died, it was like losing a loved one, a family member, you don't think of the fights you had with the person who died. You defend their memory. There is a reason Jerry wrote NO EXCUSES about Layne and the line "You, my friend, I will defend / And if we change, well, I'll love you anyway." "Whatever dramas are going on in my life, I always find that place inside my head where I see myself as the cleanest, tallest, strongest, wisest person that I can be." -- Layne Staley "My bad habits aren't my title. My strengths and my talent are my title." -- Layne Staley "When I tried drugs they were fucking great, and they worked for me for years, and now they're turning against me - and now I'm walking through hell and this sucks. I wrote about drugs, and I didn't think I was being unsafe or careless by writing about them. I didn't want my fans to think heroin was cool. But then I've had fans come up to me and give me the thumbs up, telling me they're high. That's exactly what I didn't want to happen." -- Layne Staley "My grandmother and mother were such huge losses, but I got Layne, the guys, and I got this.” - Jerry Cantrell, Kerrang! (December 1, 2018) “Jerry really loved Layne [Staley]. They had a bond I haven't seen before,” Jerry’s former manager Bill Siddons, April 19, 2002 (the day Layne was found two weeks after he died).

Jerry Cantrell was smiling because he knew Layne Staley was on point! That didnt always happen. It wasnt abnormal for Layne to get strung out on Heroin. If you look closely, Layne was wearing gloves and a long sleeve shirt to hide his track Marks. R.I.P Layne Staley.

Singer was high during this... that cheeky smile was because he was glad the singer was on it. Early in the song Jerry carries and guides Laynes vocals. By all accounts, Staley was high but just high enough so that he wasn't actively in withdrawal and could function in public. Songwriter and guitarist Jerry Cantrell (guitar player) had eaten a bad hot dog and was barely staving off the effects of food poisoning (you can spot a trash can next to him).

Definitely check out some of their earlier performances too like ‘Love Hate Love’ live at the Moore or ‘Bleed the Freak’ from the same concert… definitely go down the AIC rabbit hole, it’s totally worth it..:)

Jerry was in absolute peak top form for this show, Layne while still great wasn’t near peak form so Jerry did a lot of heavy lifting, with songs like brother/over now/got me long/killer is me/heaven beside you where he has a super heavy vocal presence. It hurts to say but the lead singer Layne Staley the one with the pink hair died of a heroin overdose April 5th 2002, he was found by his Mother 2 weeks later in his condo on Lake Washington he was 34. We here in Seattle still grieve for him. If you like the softer side MTV Unplugged is perfect, other songs are (Nutshell) (Got Me Wrong) and (Would?) but if you want to see this group at their prime when Layne Staley, the lead singer was young and healthy, check out Alice in Chains live at The Moore Theater. My personal favorite from this concert is(It Ain't Like that Anymore) Other songs they performed are, Man in the Box, Sea of Sorrow, The Real Thing, Bleed the Freak, and Love Hate Love. keep in mind this concert is more hard rock, and absolutely amazing. RIP Layne.

The band got its name because when Layne and Jerry met in college, Layne was already the front man of a band Called Alice N Chains.. and since he had a substance abuse problem, it was easier for him to remember. It's important to note that during the time of this performance, Layne was in the middle of a severe downward spiral with heroine. It eventually ended up taking his life. Knowing that makes this song that much more erie.

The song was actually written by Jerry Cantrell, the lead guitar player about his girlfriend at the time. Layne had to convince him to sing some of the song with him because it had meaning to Cantrell. Thank god he did because their harmonies are unreal.

What I've read about this show is that they had several rehearsals that weren't going well and they were thinking of canceling the entire thing because Lane was having health issues. So I think everyone was quite happy with how well he pulled it together for the performance.

Jerry Cantrell is the best songwriter ever in my book. Just a masterful performance from the best unplugged show. Jerry and Layne truly had special chemistry and were a once in a lifetime pairing, so sad it was so short lived because Layne wasn’t able to overcome is demons. Anyway RIP Layne, the body of work they put out in a short time in the 90s was legendary. Really nobody out there compares for me to the emotion Jerry and Layne were able to put into their lyrics and music, so damn relatable.lastly the band is still fantastic, their black gives way to blue record is phenomenal.

@@texthit there are literally 3 songs from facelift to tripod that Jerry isn’t credited on, so there is not “a ton” of fantastic songs that Layne and the other guys wrote, there is on the other hand a ton of songs where Jerry was the only songwriter or primary songwriter. I think mad season is a better example of Layne’s writing but I also think it’s not even close to stuff like dirt or jar of flies. Layne was a quality songwriter and great singer/lyricist but Jerry is on a totally different level as a songwriter. To me this is for sure about Layne's heroin addiction. "I've eaten the sun, so my tongue has been burnt of the taste " is referring to getting that high from the heroin the first time is the best you'll ever feel, so nothing else is ever that good again sadly. And yes, I know from experience. 20 years + clean now though

Layne Staley really was one of the best male singers ever, but that's obviously just my opinion. There was just something about him, very haunting. RIP Layne, and thank you for being an inspiration for a lot of my songwriting. You are truly missed.

They’re still a very powerful band without him, obviously his voice is missed but Jerry is still one of the best songwriters alive. Black gives way to blue is a phenomenal album and the title track is one of the most emotional and powerful songs they’ve ever written. Their peak will always be with Layne but they’re still a great band and will remain that as long as Jerry is around running the show like he always has.

@@chupitolepame5357 difference is jerry was more of the Kurt of AIC than Alice, he was the primary songwriter not Layne. I miss Layne and he’s my favorite singer but band still kicks ass imo, black gives way to blue is a phenomenal record all the way through. As long as Jerry is around running the show I think AIC will remain great, they may never reach the heights of dirt but they still release quality music and play great show.

Few things- it was discovered later this song was a personal song if his addictiin to narcotics which was the ultimate cauuse of his pasding, similar to master of puppets being james hetfields sing about his addiction to alcohol. The raspiness was from damage to his vocals. Back in those days managers pushed drug use to get more performance time from musicians.

The singer was basically dying of a heroin addiction at this point. It was the last show they ever played with him before he died. So sad. He was one of the greats. But very sick.

Not sure how the name Alice in Chains came up... but (late) lead singer Layne Staley formed a band in Seattle in the 80's that was named "Alice n' chains"... likely a twist on the title 'Alice in Wonderland'. Jerry Cantrell (guitar/ vocals) was in a band called Diamond Lie in the 80's... he met Layne Staley and the 2 became friends. Cantrell and Staley joined forces w/ drummer Sean Kinney and (late) bassist Mike Starr in 1987, the band changed its name to Alice in Chains (Possibly after Guns N' Roses became popular, and "Alice n' chains" sounded too similar) ...but I could be wrong.

Layne the singer was struggling with addiction, You should definitely check out Alice in chains "Nutshell" MTV unplugged, you can hear him crying out for help in that performance, it's sad, haunting and absolutely beautiful at the same time. I wish he could have found the help he needed because he is definitely missed ❤

Haunting, painful and yet beautiful. Amazing. At the time of this performance, Layne's girlfriend Demri {who looks a lot like Bisscute actually] had just died and he was also addicted to heroin. This was pretty much Layne's last hurrah .. he became a recluse shortly after this and died of a heroin overdose 6 years later. RIP to an amazing musician.

The song is about about addiction. Specifically the bassist, and the vocalist were both addicts at the time of this performance and both were struggling. In fact, both Mike Starr and Layne Staley died of drug addiction Layne in 1998, and Mike in 2011. RIP to both…

It's like Layne is singing about his own demise -- SO heartbreaking knowing that he was. But B-girl, for someone that talented and successful to fall into that addiction hole, there's got to be something DEEPER dragging them down into that hole, don't you think? THAT, I think, is what he's singing about, not just the addiction, BUT what put him there - I mean I've read after looking into this, that Layne weighed 86 pounds when he died. What hole did he feel his wings had been SO denied in? DAMN .......................
